Technologies Trend in the Integration of 5G Networks and IoT in Smart Cities: A Survey

This paper presents a survey of 5G and suitable concerns in the planning and development of communication model infrastructure for the deployment of Smart Cities, also called Intelligent Cities or Digital Cities. The paper first provides an overview of 5G technology, its evolution, and how it revolutionised worldwide communication. The drivers of 5G, such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and massive machine-type communication (mMTC), will enable 5G to deliver higher speeds compared to the previous 4G and 3G generations and enable service providers to provide massive bandwidth catering to dataintensive applications such as Smart Cities. Besides humancomputer interaction (HCI), smart cities include machine type communication (MTC), in which massive communication takes place between devices and the information infrastructure through gateways. A 5G network can successfully integrate the diversified service requirements and demands of smart city applications. Smart cities require massive IoT communication built into 5G. Multiple technologies are deployed in smart cities to enhance the standard of living for people. Citizens are provided with better health services, improved transportation, efficient energy, quality education, and safety and security to public. In this survey paper we present the contribution of 5G in the deployment of smart city applications and its pillars that play a very important role in the construction of smart cities. Better healthcare systems have been developed that integrate new communication technologies and conventional health care procedures. One of the vital segments of a smart city is its transportation system, which affects the environs and health of people. The energy efficiency of smart cities can be greatly improved by 5G by using smart appliances. Smart metres deliver real-time data about the energy consumed. Users can save energy and money. Similarly, it can assist the water board team by giving real-time statistics regarding water consumption to the consumers. Almost all the smart city infrastructure mentioned above has different requirements for delay, movement, dependability, and resilience of the network. Incorporating diverse applications into a communication network is a difficult chore. 5G has been designed for forward compatibility to support future amenities not known today. The paper outlines diverse requirements for smart cities based on application and technology requirements. Lastly, the supporting technologies are highlighted for the forthcoming integration of smart cities and communication infrastructure.

Internet of things (IoT) is referred to as smart devices connected to the internet. A smart device is an electronic device, which may connect to other devices or are part of a network such as Wi-Fi. The increase of IoT devices has helped with advancing technology in many areas of society. Application of IoT in 5G/B5G devices has provided many benefits such as providing new ideas that can become projects for tech companies, generating big data (large volume of data which can be used to reveal trends, patterns and associations) and providing various ways of communicating. This has also had an impact on how companies improve their business with the use of advanced technology. However, the rapid growth of IoT has introduced a new platform for cybercriminals to attack. There has been published security measures on IoT to help deal with such risks and vulnerabilities. This survey paper will explore IoT in relation to smart homes, smart cities, wearables and connected cars. The benefits, risks and vulnerabilities will be discussed that comes along with using such devices connected to the internet.

The world population is continuously growing and reached a significant evolution of the society, where the number of people living in cities surpassed the number of people in rural areas. This puts national and local governments under pressure because the limited resources, such as water, electricity, and transports, must thus be optimized to cover the needs of the citizens. Therefore, different tools, from sensors to processes, service, and artificial intelligence, are used to coordinate the usage of infrastructures and assets of the cities to build the so called smart cities. Different definitions and theoretical models of smart cities are given in literature. However, smart city can usually be modelled by a layered architecture, where communication and networking layer plays a central role. In fact, smart city applications lay on collecting field data from different infrastructures and assets, processing these data, taking some intelligent control actions, and sharing information in a secure way. Thus, a two way reliable communications layer is the basis of smart cities. This chapter introduces the basic concepts of this field and focuses on the role of communication technologies in smart cities. Potential technologies for smart cities are discussed, especially the recent wireless technologies adapted to smart city requirements.

Smart cities and 5G networks: An emerging technological area?

The term “smart city” has recently become greatly widespread in academic and political discourse. Nevertheless, this is rather a marketing term that unites a number of technological (and other) areas: Internet of Things (IoT), augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), communication networks. The latest generation of networks is essential for the development of digital ecosystems of smart cities. It has been assumed that the smart city and 5G networks form an emerging technological area. The goal of the work is to study the structure of the development and implementation of new technologies for the urban environment on the sample of 5G-based technologies. For the analysis of new technologies in the selected subject area, a study of patent landscapes and scientometric analysis of the topic field has been conducted. The object of the scientometric analysis is the study of citation patterns. The use of the patent landscape is based on the information systems and databases of patent information developed by patent offices and commercial companies and consists of visualizing the logical connections between various indicators of patent activity, on the one hand, and technological and market trends, on the other. Together, the scientometric and patent landscape show the most promising areas of technological research. The results of the study can be used in further theoretical and applied research, in the formation of government policy in research and development, as well as in decision-making in the field of urban management.
