Wavelet based local tomographic image using terahertz techniques
Digital Signal Processing, 2009
Terahertz computed tomography has been developed based on coherent THz detection and filtered back projection (FBP) algorithms, which allows the global imaging of the internal structure and extraction of the frequency dependent properties. It offers a promising approach for achieving non-invasive inspection of solid materials. However, with traditional CT techniques, i.e. FBP algorithms, full exposure data are needed for inverting the Radon transform to produce cross sectional images. This remains true even if the region of interest is a small subset of the entire image. For time-domain terahertz measurements, the requirement for full exposure data is impractical due to the slow measurement process. This paper explores time domain reconstruction of terahertz measurements by applying wavelet-based filtered back projection algorithms for recovery of a local area of interest from terahertz measurements within its vicinity, and thus improves the feasibility of using terahertz imaging to detect defects in solid materials and diagnose disease states for clinical practise, to name a few applications.
Nondestructive defect identification with terahertz time-of-flight tomography
IEEE Sensors Journal, 2000
We demonstrate the application of terahertz (THz) time-of-flight tomographic imaging to identify the distribution of defects in foam materials. Based on THz time-domain spectroscopy technology, THz imaging probes targets with picosecond pulses of broad-band radiation in the frequency range from 100 GHz to 3 THz. The reflected THz wave from the target is measured using electrooptic sampling, which provides two-dimensional images with phase and amplitude information, as well as the spectroscopic properties of the object. The depth information is recorded in the THz time-domain waveform. Several reconstruction models are developed for tomographic imaging of defects inside foam. Foam insulation of space shuttle fuel tanks, with prebuilt defects, are investigated with THz tomographic imaging. Most prebuilt defects are pinpointed and models used to identify different kinds of defects are discussed. INTRODUCTION P ULSED terahertz (THz) imaging refers to imaging techniques which utilize picosecond pulses of broad-band radiation in the frequency range from 100 GHz to 3 THz. Since the work of Hu et al. in 1995 [1], a number of THz wave imaging modalities have emerged [2]. The pulsed nature and broad bandwidth of THz radiation has made it ideal for imaging applications such as impulse ranging [3], biomedical, or chemical specimen identifications [4], [5]. The THz band is advantageous since it includes very short wavelengths and, therefore, provides high resolution compared to traditional electromagnetic tomography at radio frequencies. It is also subject to significantly less scattering than infrared light, which allows for improved reconstruction fidelity compared to infrared tomography techniques. Processing sequence for non-destructive inspection based on 3D terahertz images
In this paper we present an innovative data and image processing sequence to perform non-destructive inspection from 3D terahertz (THz) images. We develop all the steps starting from a 3D tomographic reconstruction of a sample from its radiographs acquired with a monochromatic millimetre wave imaging system. Thus an automated segmentation provides the different volumes of interest (VOI) composing the sample. Then a 3D visualization and dimensional measurements are performed on these VOI, separately, in order to provide an accurate nondestructive testing (NDT) of the studied sample. This sequence is implemented onto an unique software and validated through the analysis of different objects. © (2014) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
Wavelet transform and terahertz local tomography
2007
We use the theory of two dimensional discrete wavelet transforms to derive inversion formulas for the Radon transform of terahertz datasets. These inversion formulas with good localised properties are implemented for the reconstruction of terahertz imaging in the area of interest, with a significant reduction in the required measurements. As a form of optical coherent tomography, terahertz CT complements the current imaging techniques and offers a promising approach for achieving non-invasive inspection of solid materials, with potentially numerous applications in industrial manufacturing and biomedical engineering.
THz technology: Ideas and considerations on possible diagnostics applications
2016
Scanning Electron Microscope is becoming a vital imaging tool in desktop laboratories because of its high imaging capability. Through this work we evaluate the performance of two different SEMs consisting of a tungsten gun and a field effect gun, with respect to time and magnification by estimating their image signalto-noise ratio. SNR is mainly applied to quantify the level of image noise over changes in the acquisition time and magnification rates. Majority of the existing methods to estimate this quantity are based on crosscorrelation technique and requires two images of the same specimen area. In this paper we propose a simple and efficient technique to compute signal-to-noise ratio using median filters. Unlike other techniques the proposed method uses only a single image and can be used in real time applications. The derived results show the effectiveness of the developed algorithm.
THz radiation is capable of penetrating most of nonmetallic materials and allows THz spectroscopy to be used to image the interior structures and constituent materials of wide variety of objects including Integrated circuits (ICs). The fact that many materials in THz spectral region have unique spectral fingerprints provides an authentication platform to distinguish between authentic and counterfeit electronic components. Counterfeit and authentic ICs are investigated using a high-speed terahertz spectrometer with laser pulse duration of 90 fs and repetition rate of 250 MHz with spectral range up to 3 THz. Time delays, refractive indices and absorption characteristics are extracted to distinguish between authentic and counterfeit parts. Spot measurements are used to develop THz imaging techniques. In this work it was observed that the packaging of counterfeit ICs, compared to their authentic counterparts, are not made from homogeneous materials. Moreover, THz techniques were used to observe different layers of the electronic components to inspect die and lead geometries. Considerable differences between the geometries of the dies/leads of the counterfeit ICs and their authentic counterparts were observed. Observing the different layers made it possible to distinguish blacktopped counterfeit ICs precisely. According to the best knowledge of authors the reported THz inspection techniques in this paper are reported for the first time for authentication of electronic components.
This paper introduces a novel reconstruction approach for enhancing the resolution of the terahertz (THz) images. For this purpose the THz imaging equation is derived. According to our best knowledge we are reporting the first THz imaging equation by this paper. This imaging equation is universal for THz far-field imaging systems and can be used for analyzing, describing and modeling of these systems. The geometry and behavior of Gaussian beams in far-field region imply that the FWHM of the THz beams diverge as the frequencies of the beams decrease. Thus, the resolution of the measurement decreases in lower frequencies. On the other hand, the depth of penetration of THz beams decreases as frequency increases. Roughly speaking beams in sub 1.5 THz, are transmitted into integrated circuit (IC) packages and the similar packaged objects. Thus, it is not possible to use the THz pulse with higher frequencies in order to achieve higher resolution inspection of packaged items. In this paper, after developing the 3-D THz point spread function (PSF) of the scanning THz beam and then the THz imaging equation, THz images are enhanced through deconvolution of the THz PSF and THz images. As a result, the resolution has been improved several times beyond the physical limitations of the THz measurement setup in the far-field region and sub-Nyquist images have been achieved. Particularly, MSE and SSIM´ have been increased by 27% and 50% respectively. Details as small as 0.2 mm were made visible in the THz images which originally reveals no details smaller than 2.2 mm. In other words the resolution of the images has been increased by 10 times. The accuracy of the reconstructed images was proved by high resolution X-ray images.

Established methods based on X-rays, ultrasound, thermography, eddy current, and optics are very effective in fault detection and structural analysis. However, these methods are limited for some applications, for example, the non-destructive testing of fiber-reinforced plastics, foams, and sandwich or hollow structures. In these cases, terahertz technology offers an innovative method to overcome these limitations. Tremendous advances have been made in this new technology in terms of their industrialization in recent years. This paper presents techniques for use in industrial applications.

Teraherz frequencies electromagnetic waves - a new tool for investigating composite defects
2011
In this paper the possibility of using a modern NDT technique THz electromagnetic waves for composite materials defects detection and identification was investigated. Two technological defects were investigated voids and internal delaminating. The composite materials were hand lay up made. Several kinds of reinforcing fibers (glass, basalt, jute) and polyester resin were used. Glass micro spheres and mica plates were placed at different depths in order to simulate technological defects. The specimens were tested using terahertz frequencies electromagnetic waves. The goal was to verify if the NDT method is appropriate to identify technological defects, misuse damage as well as determine parameters such as depth or size.
