Infantile Hemangiomas with Minimal or Arrested Growth - Do They Occur More Often in Premature Infants Than It Seemed?

Infantile hemangiomas with minimal or arrested growth (IH-MAGs) are a subtype of infantile hemangiomas (IHs), characterized by absent or minimal (equal or less than 25% of the total IH surface area) proliferation. They are less conspicuous than classical IHs, but can also be complicated by ulceration or can be misdiagnosed as capillary malformations. The literature on IH-MAGs is scarce, but with increasing interest in the literature. We investigated the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of IH-MAGs in a retrospective series of cases found in a regional tertiary-care pediatric clinic during a 7-year period. Eleven infants with 14 IH-MAGs were included in the analysis. There were 7 girls and 4 boys. Unlike the majority of other authors, we have found 7 premature and 4 full-term infants in our case series. Most of the IH-MAGs were classified as focal (78.57%), were present at birth (72.72%), and were located on the lower body, below the waist line (71.42%). In almost all infants, erythematous background as well as vasoconstricted patches and/or halos were present, while fine or coarse telangiectasias were observed mainly in full-term infants. A subtle proliferative component was observed in only one case on follow-ups. There were no ulcerations. The therapy - topical and oral beta-blocker - was introduced in two cases of IH-MAGs in the face region. Clinical characteristics of IH-MAGs in our case series were similar to those found in other studies on this subject. However, we found a significantly higher percentage of premature infants with IH-MAGs than in any available reference.

Infantile Hemangiomas: An Update on Pathogenesis and Treatment

Infantile hemangiomas are the most common benign vascular tumors in infancy. This review includes an update on the current knowledge on pathogenesis, a discussion on indications for treatment, and a review of the mechanisms underlying the different treatment methods. Although most infantile hemangiomas require only active observation because of their natural course, which results in involution, about 10% present with complications that require immediate treatment. The basic treatment includes systemic and topical options. In cases of insufficient response or rebound growth, other forms of treatment should be considered. In some cases, combined therapy might be initiated.

Background: Infantile Hemangioma (IH) is a benign vascular neoplasm and most commonly found in newborns. IH appears in the first few weeks of life and mostly resolve immediately. Early recognition of symptoms, diagnosis, and therapy has an important role in determining the prognosis of this condition. A prospective study of infantile hemangiomas with a focus on incidence and risk factors

Infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are the most common tumor of infancy and have been estimated to occur in 4% of infants. Only two previous incidence studies of IH in a healthy population have been published, and both of these were performed in the first week of life. The objective was to identify the incidence of IH in an Australian neonatal population and characterize the risk factors. All women who presented to the postnatal ward in a 200-bed maternity hospital were asked to complete a questionnaire. Details of maternal history and birth details were recorded. Two follow-up emails 3 and 6 weeks after discharge were sent to all mothers who consented, asking if their baby had developed an IH. Prospective study of infantile hemangiomas: demographic, prenatal, and perinatal characteristics

Objectives To characterize demographic, prenatal, and perinatal features of patients with infantile hemangiomas and to determine the importance of these factors in predicting rates of complication and treatment. Study design We conducted a prospective study at 7 U.S. pediatric dermatology clinics. A consecutive sample of 1058 children, aged 12 years and younger, with infantile hemangiomas was enrolled between September 2002 and October 2003. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect demographic, prenatal, perinatal, and hemangioma-specific data. National Vital Statistic System Data (NVSS) was used to compare demographic variables and relevant rates of prenatal events. Results In comparison with the 2002 United States National Vital Statistics System birth data, we found that infants with hemangiomas were more likely to be female, white non-Hispanic, premature (P < .0001) and the product of a multiple gestation (10.6% versus 3.1%; P < .001). Maternal age was significantly higher (P < .0001), and placenta previa (3.1%) and pre-eclampsia (11.8%) were more common. Conclusions Infants with hemangiomas are more likely to be female, white non-Hispanic, premature, and products of multiple gestations. Prenatal associations include older maternal age, placenta previa, and pre-eclampsia. No demographic, prenatal, and perinatal factors predicted higher rates of complications or need for treatment.

Infantile hemangiomas are vascular tumors of infancy and early childhood age with approximately 5-10% prevalence rate among infants. Hemangiomas are formed by overly proliferated capillaries which are packed densely, which contains high density of cells in which open lumens are absent. The tumor is highly proliferative by nature during infancy. Hemangiomas stabilizes subsequently with time and tumor undergo slow and spontaneous involution, most of which regresses completely by 5 years of age. In females patients its prevalence is 3 times more in comparison to male patient. So, we have reported and presenting a case report of a female child of 4 months old reported to us with swelling on left side of face. No birth mark was present at her birth but with passage of time swelling appeared and increased in size progressively, with a tendency of easy bleed even with minor injuries and the regression of the lesion suggests a case of infantile hemangioma.

Infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are the most common tumors of childhood. Unlike other tumors, they have the unique ability to involute after proliferation, often leading primary care providers to assume they will resolve without intervention or consequence. Unfortunately, a subset of IHs rapidly develop complications, resulting in pain, functional impairment, or permanent disfigurement. As a result, the primary clinician has the task of determining which lesions require early consultation with a specialist. Although several recent reviews have been published, this clinical report is the first based on input from individuals representing the many specialties involved in the treatment of IH. Its purpose is to update the pediatric community regarding recent discoveries in IH pathogenesis, treatment, and clinical associations and to provide a basis for clinical decision-making in the management of IH.

Background: Infantile hemangiomas (IH) are the most prevalent benign tumors in children, predominantly in girls. Most IH cases do not require treatment due to spontaneous involution, but 10% of cases do require early treatment due to size, location, and complications. Purpose: This study tried to define the profile, clinical aspects, and therapy of IH in Dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital, Banda Aceh. Methods: A descriptive approach using a retrospective analysis employing secondary data from the outpatient clinic's patient registration book. This study included all new cases of infantile hemangioma at the outpatient clinic general hospital between 2013 and 2021. Result: A total of 105 patients were involved in this study.
