Abstract- A Weblab is an experiment operated remotely via internet. Besides the strictly technical aspects of such an experiment, which may contribute for the learning of Chemical Engineering fundamentals, there is another important feedback when teams of students of two different countries are working together: the Weblab turns into an intercultural experience, enhancing the communication skills of the students. A Weblab between Universidade Federal de São Carlos (DEQ/UFSCar) and the Ecole Nationale Supérieurs d’Ingénieurs en Arts Chimiques et Technologiques (ENSIACET) is presented in this work. A mass transfer experiment in a bench scale reactor (agitated and aerated) had to be studied by heterogeneous teams, thus emulating challenges that will be common in future work environments. Professor Yehia F. Khalil developed and taught this core course in the chemical engineering curricula at Yale University. The course involves a series of basic experiments in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, process control, separations, and chemical kinetics. The goal of each laboratory exercise is to acquire the necessary laboratory data to either solve a design problem or answer fundamental questions about the underlying chemical and physical phenomena. Prior to each laboratory sequence, you will review the relevant literature, decide what data you will need to collect, how the data should be reduced and plotted, and plan your experiments accordingly. After completing each laboratory sequence, you will prepare a report detailing your experimental findings and your solution to the design problem and/or answers to the fundamental questions.

He received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware and is an inventor on 45 U.S. patents and has published over 100 articles. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Delaware. David M. Griffin directs the undergraduate chemical engineering laboratories at the University of Kansas (KU). Dr. Griffin joined KU in 2013 and has overseen the senior laboratory courses ever since; teaching students as well as commissioning new experiments and maintaining current ones. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kansas Ethan A. Finberg graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kansas (KU) in 2019. Following graduation, Ethan was hired by the Chemical & Petroleum Department to be an instructor for the Senior Chemical Engineering Laboratory course. Ethan continues to teach this course and is now working with Dr. Mark B. Shiflett in pursuit of a M.S. in Chemical Engineering. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY I CPE616 is the first course in which KU chemical engineering students apply their knowledge from junior-level core chemical engineering courses to data collected in a lab.
