Telling Stories in Contemporary English. A Workbook in English Language and Cultural Studies
This workbook has been conceived while I was teaching a course on “English Language” for the 2nd year students of a degree course called “Lingue, culture e istituzioni del Mediterraneo”. Its purpose is to offer students the critical instruments to accept the challenge that learning ‘english’ entails today – not ‘just’ learning a language, but dealing with the whole, multifaceted heap of phenomena that go under the name of ‘english’ today, including those aspects informed by colonial and postcolonial dynamics. This work includes a number of texts from different media — writing, but also music and film. It must be considered as an attempt to create a common space of thinking in a language such as english that constantly challenges our attempts at grasping and framing it into either linguistic, literary or cultural syllabuses. This language, as a house that we inhabit (whether as ‘foreign’ or ‘native’ speakers) is haunted by the spectres of all the stories that are told in this language, and that shape its present form in the very moment when we are trying to teach it. To invite students in this haunted house also means to give them the keys to its closed rooms and dark alleys, to the shantytowns and skyscrapers where english is spoken today.
This paper seeks to argue for the significant contribution a narrative inquiry can offer for research in education. This work arises from the author's PhD research that she is currently conducting at Deakin University, Australia. As data analysis is still in progress, this paper should not be regarded as a conclusion of her findings. The author's intention is to explain how the literary praxis or the teaching of English literature practiced by the academics at the universities in Padang West Sumatra Indonesia can be investigated through narrative inquiry. Narrative inquiry is a study of how humans make meaning of experience by endlessly telling and retelling stories about themselves that both refigure the past and create purpose in the future (Connelly & Clandinin.1998). This article intends to show how literature may be used in language classes to develop student's knowledge of English. First, we examine the evolution of literature in the language classroom, then we give account of some reasons that justify its use in language classes, of the role of reading in language development, and of the way poetry is treated in the ESL classroom. The Waste Land is a good work to be used as a tool to develop student's communicative competence in English. The article ends with a didactic proposal for ESL instruction based on the poem.
Research Proposal: Using the genre tale to teach English as a Foreign Language
Discussing Language Teaching -not only the teaching of foreign languages, but also the teaching of a native language (although this paper intends to focus on a perspective in which the English Language is taught as a second/foreign language) -an issue that is frequently pointed out is the possibility and the benefits of teaching a Language through Literature. The benefits of such Language Teaching (that uses the literary text) frequently mentioned are: the possibility of explaining grammar topics with a context, in other words, to establish a Language Teaching that does not use isolated sentences; as well as the students' approximation of a cultural reality and linguistic diversity of the place or places where the Language studied comes from.

Literature; in addition, being considered an art, it is also a component in the training of a professional in teaching the English language. Furthermore, in a deeper analysis, it can be deduced that the English language teaching professional should know English literature and the origin of the English language, taking into account aspects related to Linguistics. However, the curriculum of the English teaching career at UAM (Universidad Americana de Costa Rica) has courses of Literature developed in Poetry, Narrative, and Drama and they analyzed important details in the evolution of the English literature, culture, language, history and linguistics; nevertheless, are the students well prepared to teach literature? Do they know what specific techniques, methods or approaches for teaching Literature? These aspects of the study are considered part of an investigation that aims to expose not only the theory but also recommend future English teachers in the teaching of English literature.
Uses of Narrative in English Language Studies: Cognition, Culture, and Narrative

The article aims to discuss the use of narrative as a teaching and learning modality from the perspective of an educational psychologist and curriculum and instructional programs specialist, the academic areas of the author for more than forty years. First Piaget’s work, whose lectures the author had the honor of attending at Universite de Geneve in the early 1970s, particularly his formulation of the development of cognitive schemata related to causality will be briefly presented. Then cultural narratives will be used to illustrate how individual human development and various stages of cultural perceptions of causality may show parallels along the Piagetian developmental perspective. Finally, the last theme will deal with relating the uses of cognitive and cultural schemata to narratives in terms of curricular concerns.
The Significance of Literary Texts in Pedagogy of English Language in EFL/ ESL Classrooms
Nowadays, one of the major concerns of teachers is usually about the material they intend to present to the students. The challenge that faces English classes is literature. The benefits of using literary texts in English language classes outweigh its shortcomings that specified by some literary critics, for instance Chnara Khdhir and Mariwan Hasan pointed out this truth in their paper entitled, “The Importance of Literary Texts in Teaching Language in EFL Classes: The Waste Land as an Example”, which we strongly agree that one can easily learn a language through the literature of the target language. To learn a language one needs to study reading, writing, listening and speaking; the four skills of the English language, which will all be available in literature. Materials are provided, which are sufficient for these skills, but literary texts have ascertained a worthy source that accomplishes these abilities. Moreover, culture information is inferred via language learning, and yet with comprehension of society. This is a characteristic of language that requires materials associating with culture. Culture is a basis for literature; namely; it does not merely imply that literature deals with culture, but literature about the culture of any specific user of that language. Furthermore, one can say the use of literary texts in language classes inspires more attentive and determined language learning. Thus, the students are not merely uncovered to the actual usage of language, but also they become critical scholars. As such, this study argues the causes behind focusing on the use of literary texts as a significant source in teaching English language. This thesis sets out to apply procedures and concepts derived from contemporary linguistics in the analysis of short stories. The goal is to arrive at an approach to the teaching of literature within the context of English language teaching. Theory is drawn from the French structuralists and Russian formalists, and from contemporary stylistics. The opening section is concerned with various theoretical approaches to literary study as they relate to three levels of analysis. The focus, initially, is on the underlying structures of narrative and the attempts of structuralists to isolate these and relate them to patterns and conventions discernible in literature as a whole. The Significance of the Linguistic Approach to Literature: Pedagogical Implications

Along with other resources, literature is nowadays viewed as one of the authentic resources in teaching foreign languages. It has been demonstrated that using literature in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms follows a variety of approaches. Since literature appeals to many learners' personalities and it is an obligatory module at the Algerian tertiary level in departments majoring in English language, this paper seeks to clarify the importance of linguistically analyzing literary works. In addition, it aims at suggesting implications for using this approach to literature in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) for the purpose of enhancing learning.
