Burnout and its associated factors among medical students of Jazan University, Jazan, Saudi Arabia
2020
Purpose The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of burnout syndrome and its associated factors among medical students at Jazan University, Jazan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 440 randomly selected medical students at Jazan University. The questionnaire used for this study was based on the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. Findings The overall prevalence of burnout was estimated at 60.2% (95% CI 55.6–64.8). The prevalence was higher for females (64.1%) than for males (56.2%) but without statistically significant differences (p > 0.05). On average, the students scored the highest averages in the personal burnout category, followed by the study-related and client-related burnout categories. In the multivariate analysis, a lower age (beta = −3.17, p = 0.026), female (beta = −0.896, p = 0.016), and having better burnout knowledge (beta = 0.710, p = 0.025) predict significantly higher personal burnout. Objective: Burnout syndrome causes chronic fatigue, loss of motivation, despair, decreased work performance, and depression. Clinical medical students risk developing burnout syndrome due to long-term learning pressure, responsibilities for patient care and night shifts. This study aimed to examine the factors associated with burnout syndrome among clinical medical students at Chonburi Hospital. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2022 and January 2023. Data were collected using the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey among 106 medical students. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, ANOVA, and the independent t-test were used to investigate the association among variables. Results: Severe burnout syndrome was not found among clinical medical students. High emotional exhaustion was the most common burnout symptom among these medical students (53.8%). While 27.3% had high depersonalization, no medical students had low personal accomplishment. The factor related to high emotional exhaustion was 4 th-year medical students. At the same time, the factors associated with high depersonalization were fourth-year medical students, males, and low accumulated grade point averages (GPAX). Conclusion: The prevalence of severe burnout was not found among clinical medical students at Chonburi Hospital. However, males, fourth-year medical students, and low GPAX were risk factors for burnout symptoms. Therefore, screening, monitoring, and providing help to these at-risk medical students to reduce their chances of severe burnout should be encouraged.
Burnout risk in medical students in Spain using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey
Purpose It is questionable whether the Maslach Burnout is suitable for studying burnout prevalence in preclinical medical students because many questions are patient-centered and the students have little or no contact with patients. Among factors associated with burnout in medical students, the gender shows conflicting results. The first aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of the risk of burnout in medical students in preclinical and clinical years of training, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey, specifically designed and validated to assess the burnout in university students, and secondly, to investigate the association between gender and burnout subscales. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 270 Spanish medical students—176 (65%) in the third year and 94 (35%) in the sixth year of training—using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey questionnaire. Results Internal consistencies (Cronbach’s alpha) for the three subscales on the whole sample were as follows: for exhaustion 0.78, cynicism 0.78, and efficacy 0.71. Moreover, the prevalence of burnout risk was significantly higher in sixth-year students 35 (37.5%) compared with students in third year of training 26 (14.8%) (v2 test, p\0.0001). No significant association was found between gender and burnout subscales. Conclusions The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey overcame difficulties encountered when students have little or no contact with patients. Our findings show that the risk of burnout prevalence doubled from the third year to sixth year of training and that gender was not significantly associated with any of the subscales of burnout.

Burn-out in a sample of physicians, nurses and medical students-risk factors analysis”
The burn-out syndrome is a relatively young and controversial clinical entity, unrecognized by the American Psychiatric Association classification of mental disorders (DSM IV TR) and considered only an additional term in the last edition of the International Classification of Mental Disorders (ICD-10), elaborated by WHO. Although little efforts have been put into the conceptualizing and formulating an operational diagnosis and treatment guidelines for this syndrome, its importance for physicians, from the professional risk point of view, cannot be denied. The general practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists and other health care providers should recognize and efficiently treat this syndrome that could represent a distinct entity, an intricate aspect of an underground, ignored psychopathology or a part of a dual diagnosis. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) and for Anxiety (HAMA), as well as Montgomery Asberg Depression Rati...
Burnout Syndrome Among Medical College Faculties in Chennai- a Cross-Sectional Study
Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences
BACKGROUND Burnout is a stress-induced problem commonly found among human service professionals which is characterised by emotional exhaustion, a reduced sense of personal accomplishment and depersonalisation. This study was undertaken to assess the professional burnout and its covariates among medical professionals working in a Medical College, Chennai. MATERIALS AND METHODS It is a cross-sectional study done among 250 faculties working in a private medical college in Chennai. The prevalence of burnout was assessed using self-administered Oldenburg's burnout inventory (OLBI), which is free to use and internationally validated. A pre-tested Structured Questionnaire was used to assess the factors associated with it and the coping strategies employed. Binary logistic regression analysis was done to calculate adjusted odds ratio to assess association between burnout and the covariates. RESULTS Among the 250 participants, 128 were women and 122 were men with the mean age of 31.9 ± 10.8 years. 42% belonged to medicine-allied fields, 36.4% surgery allied and 21.6% were from pre-and para-clinical department. Among the study group 27.2% experienced burnout, the majority being doctors in medicine allied fields (29.81%). The study showed that prevalence of burnout was higher among women, those suffering from inadequate sleep, those who do not communicate effectively and those unable to deal with anger/ failures. Higher professional burnout was also seen among doctors undermined by colleagues or superiors and those who were unsatisfied with their income. In contrast, marriage seems to be a protective factor with those married having 0.78 times lesser risk of being burnt out. CONCLUSION Professional burnout is a serious issue, which unless properly addressed may impair their quality of life.
