‘A Text Book of Readings in English Poetry’ is a comprehensive book which contains the forms of poetry along with thought stirring poems to develop an appreciation of English language as well as its connotations and interpretations among the students. It aims at enabling them to take cognizance of the historical, social and cultural context of each literary work and thereby make connections between literature and society and appreciate literature’s ability to stimulate feeling. It also initiates to sensitize them to the aesthetic, cultural and social aspects of literature by presenting an extensive view of the cultural and social patterns of the society in specific time and situation in which it flourished by covering all walks of human life: rational, irrational, carnal, and emotional. It also focuses towards making the students aware of literatures written in English speaking countries and thereby, developing a more complex understanding of the history of literature, it’s narrative techniques and kinds of poetry. This will certainly enable and enhance the taste for poetry among the students of Indian Universities
