Identifying Critical Success and Failure Factors in Construction Projects in Nigeria
International Journal of Advanced Academic Research, 2015
Understanding those factors that contribute to success and failure of construction projects is crucial. Yet, empirical evidence on these factors remains scarce within the developing countries. This study seeks to identify the critical factors contributing to successful delivery of building projects within the Nigerian construction industry. The Mean Item Score (MIS) ranking revealed the most critical success and failure factors in relation with projects within the construction industry. While timely disbursement of payments, availability of resources as well as competency of contractors are adjudged most critical to construction project success, inadequate machinery and manpower, poor remuneration and dearth of professionalism are seen as most detrimental to effective project performance. Given the significance of these factors, improving attention on them is considered indispensable for successful delivery of construction projects.
Project failure has become a recurrent feature of construction projects in developing countries as revealed by research works. This manifests not only as abandonment of projects, but in the form of structural defaults leading to structural collapse, prolonged projects delivery time, cost overshoots and client dissatisfaction. The aim of this research therefore was to critically analyse the factors that may lead to project failure in Anambra State, South East, Nigeria, with a view to ameliorating the high level of project failure. Primary information used in the research were sourced from a survey of one hundred (100) project professionals, with a minimum of 5 years of experience. Structured questionnaires based on the Likert-5-Point Scale of Responses were used to capture their opinions on the reasons for project failure, while Secondary information were sourced from review of literature. Results were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools based on the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 16.0). Our results show that indeed, the rate of failure of projects is high (p = 0.000). We have established and firmly ranked the first five factors responsible for project failure in Anambra State, South East, and Nigeria. The researchers concludes that the most important factor for project failure is increase in the price of starting materials. It is recommended that the results presented in this research be widely disseminated and used in community enlightenment, and in further policy guidance and regulation. It is also recommended that the study be applied to the entire South East, Nigeria in order to generate better client satisfaction in subsequent projects.
—This study analyzes the results of a survey that aimed at assessing the critical success factors for public sector construction projects in Owerri, Imo State of Nigeria. The effects of the identified critical success factors on public sector construction project delivery were also examined. Data on the study variables were collected via structured questionnaires from fifty six (56) professionals within construction firms located in Owerri, Imo State using the Krejcie and Morgan Method of sampling. Respondents for the study were approached personally to elicit information from using questionnaires and interviews. Various statistical tools such as reliability test using Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling accuracy and Barlett test of sphericity were used in determining the accuracy of the method, while factor analysis and linear multiple regression were applied in data analysis and inference using SPSS software. The exploratory factor analysis highlights a specific set of six (6) critical success factors after subjecting sixteen (16) of the initial variables to factor analysis. The six (6) critical success factors include; efficient and effective procurement process/method, effective communication management, adequate planning, leadership skills of the project manager, weather conditions, and effective coordination of project activities. The results of the findings after subjecting the six (6) identified critical success factors to regression revealed that adequate planning had a significant impact on the success of public sector construction projects, while the remaining five (5) factors did not explain any significant variance in the success of public sector construction project delivery. The findings from this study contributes to the public sector construction project critical success factors literature by conceptualizing more on leadership skills of the project manager, effective management of communication and most importantly the provision of adequate planning in terms of schedule, and cost as a multidimensional construct for public sector construction projects success.
Assessment of the Causes of Abandonment of Construction Projects in Plateau State Nigeria
European Modern Studies Journal, 2021
The importance of the assessment of the causes of abandonment of projects in Plateau State cannot be overemphasized considering the amount of resources that are employed. The research was aimed at the assessment of the causes of abandonment of construction projects in Plateau State. Quantitative method of data collection was employed in the study using close-ended questionnaire. The data analysis tool that was employed for this study is the relative importance index (R.I.I). The RII was used to analyze data obtained for the causes of abandonment of projects; the highest value of RII was ranked 1 and so on. Also descriptive statistics was employed to analyze the background of the respondents. The research has demonstrated that there are at least (26) factors causing project abandonment in Plateau State amongst which are change in power which was ranked first with 89.00%, others are; corruption, inappropriate planning, change in power, location of project, capital mismanagement, lack of adequate feasibility study, disbursement delays, lack of adequate cost analysis, poor project management, inefficient cost control processes, poor procurement processes, community interference, incompetent contractor and security instability. Cost overrun is a very significant effect of project abandonment; when projects are abandoned, it leads to increase in the initial cost of the project, the final cost of the project exceeds the initial cost of the project as a result of non-completion of projects within the agreed contract period.
Project Failure Factors Affecting Building Project Success in Nigeria: Design and Construction Phase
2019
Some studies attempt to explore the project failure factors (PFFs) believed to affect project success. However, this specific area of PFFs remains unclear, and efforts to reach an agreement on the project failure factors have been rather limited. The main objective of this research study is to identify the PFFs that affect building project success and determine their relative importance in the stages of building process. A thorough literature review was carried out to generate a set of factors that affect project success. A questionnaire survey, based on 28 identified factors was conducted to collect data from three groups of respondents: professionals in construction industry, contractors and clients. Out of 310 questionnaires distributed, 193 were returned, representing 62.2% response rate. Using the mean score, relative importance index, and mean score average method, the most PFFs were identified. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to analyse the agreement of survey respondent...
Contributing Factors of Poor Construction Project Performance in Nigeria
International Journal of Property Sciences, 2019
The construction industry has been plagued with problems associated with lack of proper standards and lack of effective project management practice. The complex nature of the industry is what made the construction industry sensitive to poor projects performance. The issue of project performance failure has been left untreated for a very long time and this has caused the tendency for increasing effect on the construction industry and economy. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to identify the factors that contribute to poor construction project performance in Nigeria. The results of this study were achieved through a structured quantitative method of questionnaire distributed to 150 respondents comprising architects, quantity surveyors, civil engineers, and project managers in the Nigerian construction industry. Subsequently, 110 valid responses were retrieved, and the collected data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The findings revealed that fluctuation of materials price, lack of conformance to specification, poor monitoring and feedback, poor contract management and supply of defective material were the most significant factors contributing to poor construction project performance in Nigeria. With these findings, this study has provided the overview to both consultants and contractors towards counteracting the effect of factors associated with poor project performance.
Causes of government construction projects’ abandonment
2021
Government construction projects are vital to the economic development of developing countries. However, although most of these projects suffer from abandonment, little evidence exists concerning the causes that account for this setback. This paper investigates the causes of government construction project abandonment in Ghana. We used a sequential data collection approach, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and questionnaire surveys to solicit the views of project management practitioners, contractors, and clients associated with Ghana government construction project implementation. Using factor analysis and structural equation modelling, we find that Ghanaian government construction project abandonment is influenced by five sets of causes: political leadership, culture, external forces, resources (including funding) and administrative/institutional bottlenecks. Three of these sets of causes – political leadership, cultural and external forces, are the primary causes, while resou...
