Predictors of academic performance among second-year nursing students at a university in the Western Cape

Students with low grades in high school science related subjects as well as those that obtained low grades in their first year of study should be given the necessary support to avoid the risk of unsatisfactory academic performance. The performance of nursing students is a diverse topic that needs further investigation at more nursing institutions and at various levels of undergraduate programmes. This study describes the predictors of academic performance among second-year nursing students at a university in the Western Cape. A non-experimental quantitative research approach with a cross-sectional predictive design was carried out to determine the relationship between predictor variables and academic performance of second-year Bachelor of Nursing students (n=226). A multiple-linear regression analysis was done to determine which variables best explains the variations in the students' academic performance. The study found that the cognitive variables had the strongest predictive power in association with academic performance in comparison to the demographic variable, besides race which rejected the null hypothesis.

Factors Affecting Academic Performance Among Nursing Students and Their Relation to Academic Achievement

Background: Academic performance of students plays an important role to improve the quality of education which produces a high quality graduates who are the backbone of their countries. Aim: This study was to investigate the relationship between factors affecting academic performance among nursing students and their relation to academic achievement. Subjects and method: Design: A descriptive correlational research design was used for the current study. Setting : The study was carried out in the Technical Institute for Health in Port Said city Subjects: a purposive sample (140) nursing students; (14) nurses students were excluded in a pilot study, so the actual number of nurses students on duty was (126) members. Tools: Data was collected through utilizing two questionnaire sheet; a self-reporting questionnaire sheet to assess factors affecting academic performance and other for determining the academic achievement of the students. Results: Revealed that the activity and services-related aspect dimension was the highest mean (34.2±6.71), followed by the relation between the students and staff-related aspect (33.29±3.38), while the personal condition factors was the lowest mean (8.72± 1.8). Conclusion: A relationship was found only between the lecturer related-aspect and the students' academic achievement grade, while there was no a statistically significant correlation between all factors affecting on the academic performance of the students and their academic achievement grade. recommendations: Replication of the study on various academic settings to investigate factors affected students' academic performance and their achievements to detect the facilities that enhance the quality of learning.

Factors Affecting Quality Academic Performance of Student Nurses of Kokofu Nursing Training College in Ghana

This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting quality academic performance of student nurses of Kokofu Nursing Training College, Ghana. The sample comprised randomly selected 210 nursing trainees from the college across all levels. A quantitative-descriptive design was used for the study. Self-reporting questionnaire was the main instrument used for data collection. Average weighted mean was used to determine the level of impact of the different factors affecting the respondents' academic performance. The study revealed that several factors pose a high impact on the quality academic performance of student nurses of Kokofu Nursing Training College, Ghana. In this study, all the indictors in the students-related factors were discovered to have higher impact on student nurse's quality academic performance except one indicator which was found to have lower impact with the lowest mean. On the other hand, with indicators included in the category of school-related factors, two (2) were considered to have a very high impact, the next two (2) were highly impactful while the last two (2) indicators had a lower impact. In all, the study revealed that three (3) of the factors, school-related factors, teacher-related factors and student-related factors had a higher impact on quality academic performance of student nurses with studentrelated factors having the highest mean followed by school-related factors, teacher-related factors and home-related factors as the lowest

Factors affecting the academic performance of student nurses: A cross-sectional study

The academic performance of the student nurses is by the assessment of competence, defined by a student’s ability to demonstrate the performance of professional skills or behaviors. The University of Namibia (UNAM) is the only national university in Namibia that was established in 1992. It offers diploma and degree courses. The Bachelor of Nursing Science (Clinical) (Honours) was introduced in 2008 after the Diploma in Comprehensive Nursing Science was phased out. This degree is offered over the period of four years full-time. Students are allocated to the clinical practice throughout the training to acquire the relevant nursing skills. At the time of research the course was offered at two campuses only namely Windhoek and Oshakati. Predictors of academic performance, success and retention amongst undergraduate nursing students: A systematic review

Understanding the factors that predict academic performance of nursing students is one of the major goals of universities and schools of nursing globally. The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of academic performance among undergraduate nursing students. A search was carried out using various databases and journals (Science Direct, Escohost, BioMed Central, PubMed, SAGE Journals and Directory of Open Access Journals) for the period from 2006 to 2016. Two independent reviewers assessed the methodological quality of the shortlisted studies. The results are presented in textual narrative. The 17 studies included in this review represented five countries. The results of this review highlighted that older students, female gender, English language proficiency, majority ethnic status, pre-admission qualifications, high admission GPA, high supplemental application score, high pre-admission science GPA, selecting nursing as first choice for study, participating in organised music programmes, homework completion, lecture attendance, kinaesthetic learning approach, performance in psychology modules, emotional intelligence, self-control and resilience are significant predictors of academic performance among nursing students.

This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the academic performance of fourth year student nurses. The factors affecting a student's academic performance arise from several reasons. In line with this, this research was conducted to determine the factors that affect the academic performance of the nursing students which may consequently help in the improvement of the students and teachers alike. This study may benefit the students by allowing them to understand better the factors that can affect their academic performance. They may be able to improve their academic performance with the findings that are established by this study. A quantitative-descriptive design was utilized. Self-reporting questionnaire was the main method used for data gathering. Average weighted mean was used to determine the level of impact of the different factors affecting the respondents' academic performance. The first two (2) items in the personal conditions category are found to be of high impact. Meanwhile, the last three (3) items in the same subset fell in the low range. On the other hand, all indicators included in the category of study habits were considered highly impactful except for the last item which was ranked rather lower. Student nurses have been discovered to have rated home-related factors as low in impact. In school-related aspects, the first six (6) items are of high impact; conversely, the 7 th indicator was rated low. Among the teacher-related-factors, only item 1 was established to be of very high impact and the rest posed to be highly impactful. In the subset of personal factors, feeling sleepy in class in class was rated to be of highest impact. The indicator 'I study only when there is a quiz' was determined to have the highest impact among study habits. Meanwhile, among the home-related aspects, 'I live far from school' was found to be the most impactful. The indicator 'the time schedule is followed' was determined to have the greatest effect among the school-related items. Highest of impact among the five domains were the teacher-related factors. Based from the findings, it was concluded that several factors pose a high impact on the academic performance of student nurses, with teacher-related factors topping the list. Among the five (5) domains, study habits and school-related factors fall behind the teacher-related factors. Nonetheless, both categories are still deemed to be highly impactful. Conversely, personal conditions and home-related factors pose little effect on student nurses' academic performance.
