Impact of Digital-computational Design on the Architectural Design Process
This research focuses on the evolving nature and concepts of digital- computational designs and attempts to elucidate the impacts on the architectural design process. The motivation for this thesis is based on the recent interest in various Architectural conferences and publications on the effects of the process change caused by digital means. The study is centred on the assumption that computational methods have enhanced creativity and proffered design solutions that could not be achieved by conventional means. The answers to this assumptions and questions have been sought through a thorough exploration of the diverse concepts and tools and processes that enable design computation. It then proceeds to investigate design projects executed by contemporary architects that engage in the use of computation. The findings from the inquiry ascertains the hypothesis and explicates the benefits inherent in the projects investigated. It concludes by highlighting the need to sensitize and raise the awareness of professional and students on the benefits and potentials of design enabled by computation.

The emergence of digital tools in architecture since the beginning of the XXI century is deeply transforming the protocols, the design methodologies, and the conceptualization of the discipline. Traditional architectural education has remained at the periphery of these developments, whereas certain “advanced” architectural schools are deploying tremendous efforts to embrace these tools. The Digital Design Process - Reflections on a Single Design Case
CAD tools are increasing their expressive and geometric power to enable a design process in which the computer model can be used throughout the whole design process for realizing the design. Such a process, in which other media such as physical scale models or drawings are no longer required by necessity to facilitate the design process, can be considered a digital design process. Rather than proposing that such a process is ideal -drawings and scale models should not be discarded -we feel that when taken as a starting point, the digital design process raises a number of new challenges to architectural design that deserve attention. These challenges concern the basic activities in design: exploration of the problem space, creating preliminary solutions, understanding consequences of design decisions, and so forth. In this paper we take the concrete design case of a graduation project that was developed from the start solely in CAD. We identify a number of key issues in that process such as continuous modeling, the model as design, continuous pliability, localized focus, and postponed decision. These issues not only have a technical, CAD-related aspect, but also are connected to architectural design. Most of these aspects are subject of contemporary debate in architectural design. On this basis, we can indicate where CAD is making a potential difference in architectural design.

The unprecedented contemporary expansion of knowledge brought forward a requirement to adopt a new mentality and a sense of urgency in bridging disciplines which, by the middle of twentieth century, gave rise to multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity. Mankind has always used intelligence to address problems that life and society have generated. The same planet with the same resources needed to support the life of an exponentially growing population. In response to these requirements, the science and the technology have also grown exponentially, giving rise to cybernetics, mathematical theories that aim to translate the nature at macro and microscopic levels and theories that had the potential of being useful in generating new solutions in architecture. The emergence of computers, of digital technology, of complex graphics and visualization techniques streamlined the approach to architectural solutions and proved useful in satisfying both the pragmatic constraints that make architecture a science and the features that make it an art. This paper investigates the design of digital processes and how they can improve the thinking process at the project concept stage and the rethinking of the relationship between architecture, sciences and, inevitably, a highly technological society. Also present is a sub textual issue as to what extent these current trends are found in Romanian schools of architecture.
Digital replacing analog: Integration of CAD within architectural design process
This paper explores the integration of computer-aided design (CAD) into the architectural design process. The aim was to examine the potential impact of digital media on the design process as a whole. Therefore by categorizing the architecture design process into three main stages, a theoretical approach and a qualitative analysis survey were utilized to identify the role of CAD during the design process. The outcome showed that digital tools have come a long way to revolutionize the architecture design process and enhance designer " s creativity, with minor pitfalls and hurdles experienced mainly in the early design ideation and conceptualization process.

The application of digital technologies in the architectural design has long history of high promises about advances that computers will bring to the practice and relatively low inclusion of the technology in the every day practice. Today, when it is impossible to find architectural bureau without the computers it appears that digital technologies plays irreplaceable part in the architectural design. Contrary to that picture, architects rarely use digital technologies to conceive and develop their concepts. Instead they use computer applications to solve specialized problems, and often outsource professional services to perform that task. The result is that development of computer applications for architectural design is targeted toward digital professional services. Architects feel that they are loosing their profession because they can not control this level of complexity. The paper explores ways how the architects can re-establish their position it the field. The better understanding of software functionality is needed to prevent overoptimistic expectations form the software tools. The paper explores what kind of digital tools architect has at disposal and how to use them to her/his advantage. This knowledge will enable architects to establish improved communication with professional services and to obtain richer feedback that will enable better design process.
Application of Technology in the Architectural Design Process

Designers draw diagrams for contemplation about architectural ideas and design relationships. On the other hand, scientists and computer engineers are also interested in designing and programming computers for the recognition and interpretation of diagrams and architectural drawings. To this goal, some researchers make empirical studies to see whether designers exchange deign laws and principles or not. Fast technological developments urge us toward the development of computerized design environments which can also utilize creativity in architectural design and lead to introducing programs that use diagrams and free-hand sketches as sources for designing. In addition, they can revive visual referents for a creative design, causing a revolution in training for architecture. The issue can be of potential architectural research as it is now for some overseas.
