Textualising the Experience – Digitalising the Text: Cyprus through Travel Literature (15th-18th Centuries), 2023
This publication features select papers presented at the 4th International Conference of the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation, entitled ‘Textualising the Experience – Digitalising the Text: Cyprus through Travel Literature (15th-18th c.)’, held in collaboration with the University of Cyprus (Nicosia, 2019). The volume consists of 15 essays in three parts (‘Zefyros’, ‘Travellers and Travel Literature’, ‘Representations of Space and People’). Using as their basis an innovative scientific methodology for travel literature, which was implemented in the framework of the Zefyros research programme, the scientists who participated in the conference considered issues regarding Cyprus drawn from a corpus of 125 travel texts dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The conference and its papers reveal the varied skein of interest which travel literature continues to hold for us. The potential for new approaches is also revealed, even though four decades of intensive research and writing on that literary genre have already gone by.
Key aim of this paper is to provide an interdisciplinary look at tourism and its diachronic textual threads bequeathed to us by the "proto-tourist " texts of the Greek travel author Pausanias. Using the Periegetic, travel texts from his voluminous Descriptions of Greece (second century AD) as a springboard for our presentation, we intend to show how textual strategies employed by Pausanias have been received and adopted/ adapted by recent travel writing. First, we examine the first extensive series of travel guides by Karl Baedeker, a seminal author who " guided " several famous modernist authors on their tourist peregrinations at the turn of the previous century. Then, we illustrate how Pausanias' writing was preserved, " translated, " and furthered not only by Baedeker and his contemporaries, but also in current travel and tourism distribution of information in vastly popular textual platforms such as the editions and media network of The Lonely P...
Lisbon as a literary tourism site: Εssays of a digital map of Pessoa as a new trigger

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the potential of literary tourism in Portugal and explore the advantages of creating a digital literary map about the places associated with the widely renowned Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa (hereafter Pessoa), as well as the places that he suggests in one of his works, a tourist guide of Lisbon: What the Tourist Should See (1925). Methods: Firstly, a study of the state of art of the key concepts was made in order to apply them in the second part, the methodology, in the case of studying Lisbon from Pessoa's perspective. Then, allying personal taste for the writer/author with interest in cultural promotion gave rise to a digital literary map of Pessoa's Lisbon. Methodologically, a questionnaire was applied covering a sample of 173 valid literary tourists. Results: literary tourism should be an object of in-depth studies, as it tends to be beneficial for cultural promotion of tourist destinations and products, specifically for literary tourists. Further limitations, implications and future suggestions of this study are provided. Implications: This paper is the first to empirically test literary tourism, proposing a digital literary tourism map. Regarding the main findings, there is high interest from literary tourists in exploring the literary places associated with Pessoa, physically or digitally.
TRAVELOGUES: AN INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE FORM OF LITERATURE
Travel Writing or Travelogue is an old canon of Literature, dealing with nature writing, adventure writing, exploration writing, guide books etc. Even the Picaresque form of novel had elements of travel writing in it. It’s a herculean job as one has to be an effective user of language and at the same time be a keen observer to portray and display analytic data. This paper focuses on the real need, utility, relevance, and importance of travel literature in today’s rapidly changing tourism sector and globalized society as people try to see a new world through the writing and impression of a writer who serves to be a informer, advisor and guide. The canon of travel writing has acquired the center of importance now rather than being in the periphery it also focuses on the changing paradigm of travel writing today, well illustrated by surveys and questionnaires.
The Impact of Information Society and Cyber-Culture in Greek Tourism Phenomenon

First, in this paper we will investigates the influence of one of the most important Greek film directors, Angelopoulos, in all national, European and worldwide tourism thru the eyes of cinema camera and Greek cyber-culture. Initially, his award-winning action and the content of his most important work, has always been united with Greece promotion and touristic development. The paper traces how, in the context of information society, his filmography can be an example of good practice for touristic promotion and development and how this kind of cinematography can be a more dynamic section of Greek touristic economy. Second, this paper aims to investigate how ancient drama which flourished in Greek antiquity still represents a portal of touristic attraction and development. Ancient Greek tragedians as well as Aristophanes' comedies magnetize and attract tourists and students from Europe and the whole world. In addition, touristic destinations where tragedy flourished have a huge number of views from tourists. Finally, we present a case study that analyzes the meaning of literary tourism and examines the prospects of its development in Greece. Through conceptual analyzes in two examples it attempts to present the wealth of literature in regard to the style of writing, values and meanings. The aim of the study is to examine the ways that will help the development of tourism through literature as well as to attract potential tourists to these island destinations.

The main purpose of this article is to describe the experience achieved when implementing practical classes of English for Tourism so as to bridge the gap between the professional world of the tourism industry and what students learn at university. In this article we will first introduce the concept of "digital storytelling" and briefly describe some of the projects that have already been developed at the University of Valencia as well as the use of digital stories in the promotion of touristy products. We will then argue that digital storytelling can be considered a productive type of activity which fits the demand of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) with regard to implementing the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) within the curriculum. Additionally, it helps to improve traditional skills development, mainly speaking and writing along with researching, collaborative tasks and working with computers. Thirdly, we will depict and discuss authentic examples of digital stories produced by undergraduate students registered in the course "Communication in English Language in Tourism I".
Starting from the assumption that texts produced in the tourist sector are a form of discourse, the paper focuses on narrative texts and singles out two sub-genres, namely travel literature proper and reports published on tourism websites. The corpus, comprising texts referring to India, is analysed with mainly qualitative methodology. Four aspects are considered in detail: enunciation and the author / reader relationship; the presence of subjective vs objective points of view; the time-space dimension; the exploitation of shared knowledge and stereotypes. The analysis reveals that the two sub-genres share some textual features and, despite their different literary value, both contribute to the construction of an image of the destination which can play a signifi cant role in tourism promotion.

El Camino Inglés, ruta de peregrinación histórica en el norte de España y la única que transcurre en su totalidad por Galicia, ha experimentado un aumento significativo en popularidad en los últimos años, siendo la cuarta ruta más recorrida, con más de veintidós mil visitantes en 2023 (Oficina de acogida del peregrino 2023). En este contexto, las guías turísticas desempeñan un papel crucial al proporcionar información esencial para los peregrinos. El presente trabajo analiza la estructura textual de las guías del Camino Inglés, centrándose en los componentes principales que las componen para guiar a los usuarios. El objetivo principal de esta investigación ha sido examinar la organización de la información en las guías del Camino Inglés y su estructura textual (estructura de la guía, organización y tipo de contenidos, extensión, anexos…). Para ello, se han recopilado y analizado varias guías turísticas, tanto impresas como digitales, que existen actualmente del Camino Inglés aplicando una metodología mixta cuantitativa-cualitativa que nos ha permitido interpretar los patrones organizacionales y sus distintas secciones. Los resultados obtenidos revelan que las guías publicadas del Camino Inglés presentan una estructura textual heterogénea, aunque la gran mayoría con unos componentes comunes. Entre estos se encuentran una introducción que proporciona una visión general del camino, una descripción detallada de la ruta dividida en etapas o secciones, puntos de interés destacados, información práctica y apéndices. Además, se ha observado que, en las guías más recientes de este camino se incluye una combinación de texto, mapas, fotografías y gráficos para presentar la información de manera clara y atractiva. Por el contrario, algunas de ellas presentan contenidos de carácter principalmente históricos, obviando temática y apartados orientativos en el camino esenciales en un texto de esta naturaleza. Resulta especialmente llamativo que en muchas de estas publicaciones prima este tipo de contenidos y se omiten otros de tipología más práctica para los usuarios de este tipo de guías, en este caso mayoritariamente peregrinos, teniendo en cuenta que su perfil hace pensar en la necesidad de incluir una información más orientativa y facilitadora del trayecto. La estructura textual y discursiva de las guías desempeña un papel crucial en la planificación y realización del viaje de los peregrinos. El análisis crítico realizado en este estudio contribuye a detectar los punto fuertes y débiles de las guías que actualmente existen en el mercado y a mejorar la calidad de las guías turísticas en general y la del Camino Inglés en particular, con el fin último de contribuir a mejorar la experiencia de sus viajeros.
This volume explores the relationship between tourism and travel texts and contemporary society, and how each is shaped by the other. A multimodal analysis is used to consider a variety of texts including novels, brochures, blogs, websites, radio commercials, videos, postcards and authentic tourist pictures and their meaning-making dynamics within the tourism discourse. The book looks at the ways in which these different texts have influenced how tourists and travellers have been viewed over time and how we envision ourselves as tourists or travellers. It puts forward multimodal analysis as the best framework for exploring the semiotic potential of these texts. Including examples from the UK, Malta, Canada, New Zealand, India, Jamaica and South Africa, this volume will be useful for researchers and students in tourism studies, communication and media studies and applied linguistics.
