The Development of Sociology in Latin America (original) (raw)

Since its inception, sociology in Latin America has had two fundamental features. First, it has had a focus on understanding and explaining the region’s ethnic, political, and economic uniqueness. Second, it has displayed the will to translate these inter pretations and theoretical constructs, from different political perspectives and ideologies, into political action. Latin American sociology has sought not only to under- stand or interpret society but also to transform it. This chapter discusses the phases of sociology in Latin America since its inception with the Romantic writers and lawyers, through evolutionary or Marxist political views, to contemporary sociology. It then describes the formalization of soci- ology studies in universities, research cen- ters, and professional associations. Finally, it presents the most important thematic areas in contemporary Latin American sociology.
