Nursing in disasters: A review of existing models

Background: Since nurses play an important role in responding to disasters, evaluating their knowledge on common patterns of disasters is a necessity. This study examined researches conducted using disaster nursing as well as the models adopted. It provides a critical analysis of the models available for disaster nursing. Methods: International electronic databases including Scopus, PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), and Google Scholar were investigated with no limitation on type of articles, between 1st January 1980 and 31st January 2016. The search terms and strategy were as follows: (Disaster ⁄ OR Emergenc ⁄) AND (Model OR Theory OR Package OR Pattern) AND (Nursing OR Nurse ⁄). They were applied for titles, abstracts and key words. This resulted in the generation of disaster nursing models. Results: Out of the 1983 publications initially identified, the final analysis was conducted on 8 full text articles. These studies presented seven models. These evinced a diverse set of models with regard to the domains and the target population. Conclusions: Although, disaster nursing models will inform disaster risk reduction strategies, attempts to systematically do so are in preliminary phases. Further investigation is needed to develop a domestic nursing model in the event of disasters.

Nursing in the emergency department (ED) during a disaster: a review of the current literature

Background: The aim of this review was to explore the current literature about working as a nurse in the emergency department (ED) during a disaster. Nurses play an important role in caring for patients that present to the ED following a disaster. While there is a great deal of literature written about disasters and disaster response, little has been written from the emergency nursing perspective. Methods: Literature was identified through electronic databases from 2000 to 2011. Articles were reviewed if they provided discussion relevant to nursing in the ED during a disaster. Results: 18 articles met the criteria. Five themes emerged from the review. There were two key findings: changes from a 'normal' working day to a disaster; and the preparedness of nurses working in the ED during a disaster.

What is the role of nursing students and schools of nursing during disaster? A discussion paper

During times of disaster, the front-line nursing workforce and the health services in which they work may be overwhelmed by a surge in patient demand. As a result, assistance will be required to bolster the nursing workforce. Commonly, discussions regarding workforce supply and sustainability during disasters are isolated within particular health service institutions. The aims of this discussion paper are to; firstly, consider the potential contribution of nursing students and schools of nursing within Australian universities to increase the health workforce during a disaster, and secondly, to present a number of recommendations that universities and schools of nursing could consider in developing their own emergency and disaster plans.

Disaster Nursing Preparedness in Local Wisdom - A Systematic Review

Disaster is a serious dysfunction that occurs in a community with widespread losses. In the field are still often encountered in the situation the victim was referred to definitive care in unstable condition. The key word, namely: "disaster nursing preparedness, disaster nursing response and local wisdom in disaster". Search Journal articles done electronically using by ProQuest, Sage, Google Scholar, EBSCO, and Science Direct. Limitation has been use for 10 years (2007-2017). From a numbers of article have been reviewed that nurses are not confident with their abilities and not ready when dealing with disaster victims, a number of nurses feels they need to receive training related to disaster management. Every nurses requires a disaster management training because it can be happened anytime. The training should be standardized across countries, so every nurses who working in disaster areas can work with nurses from other countries. In addition to focusing on disaster, nurses need to pay attention with local wisdom in order to work with communities to rebuild a better life.

We Are Now Standing On Not Normal Land: Nurses' Competency in Disaster Management

Currently, the incidence of disasters is the biggest catastrophes that threaten people " s livelihoods, health, and others welfare around the world. This situation provides the challenges for health care professionals, particularly nurses. As a result, there is a global need for all healthcare workers to be prepared and be competent in disaster management. The purpose of this paper is to describe how the roles of nurses in disaster management and how much competencies is needed. By searching the related data sources of CINAL plus, Google scholar and research gate, this paper will discusses the nurses' roles and experiences in disaster management, the reason why nurses need competencies in disaster management and how should we do to achieve the competencies of nurses in disaster management. When a disaster strikes, nurses are the ones who receive the most challenging tasks among the health care team because they are the first responders to be called upon. For that reason, the nurses should have positive characteristics and competencies to be an appropriate role model in disaster care.

Nurses’ Roles in Nursing Disaster Model: A Systematic Scoping Review

Background: Nurses have a continuous presence and crucial role in response to disasters. During disasters, nurses apply specific knowledge and skills to minimize victims’ health and life-threatening risks. Nurses’ roles in crisis are not clearly stated in resources. Thus, this study aimed to explore nurses’ role in the nursing disaster model. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using Joanna Briggs Institute framework. The review considered primary research and reviewed literature from following databases, including Web of Science, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, as well as the reference lists of articles identified for full-text review. Factors affecting nurses’ ability to provide effective care in a disaster response: a review

Disasters cause death, trauma, and psychological distress. Comprising the largest number of healthcare workers, nurses play a crucial role in reducing the impact of a disaster. The objective of this review is to identify the factors that influence nurses’ ability during a disaster emergency response to provide adequate care. This research was conducted by doing a literature search from the Pro-Quest and Science-Direct databases using the PRISMA-ScR to screen the articles. The final results included 13 articles. An analysis was performed to identify themes in line with the purpose of the review. All factors affecting nurses’ ability to respond to a disaster situation were classified into three themes: 1) factors increasing nurses’ ability, 2) barriers to delivering effective nursing care, and 3) support needed to maintain the nurses’ ability.
