The Impacts of Blended Learning on English Education in Higher Education
World Journal of English Language
The research examines the effects of blended learning (BL) on English education in Saudi Arabian higher education and its potential future developments in the context of increasing integration of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The study emphasizes the importance of measuring students' actual outcomes, access to learning opportunities, and views of those outcomes when evaluating the effectiveness of English education. The authors compare minority retention and graduation statistics in traditional English classes and BL English courses and present a set of consistent principles for measuring progress in English language acquisition and development, regardless of course format or final grade. The study suggests that BL has the potential to enhance accessibility, personalization, and active learning in English education, especially in a post-pandemic "new normal" where technology is increasingly used and diverse language learners need to be accommodated...
Blended learning has been described as a pedagogical approach that combines effectiveness and socialization opportunities of the classroom with the technologically enhanced active learning possibilities of the online environment . It has also been depicted as an approach that combines traditional learning with web-based online approaches (Whitelock & Jefts, 2003). To what extent are these claims? This study shares the findings of a research project that investigates the use of blended learning in the teaching of English for Academic Purposes to nine classes of students from the Faculty of Social Sciences at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The blended approach comes in the form of a new course book with a supporting online component. A quantitative approach involving the use of a questionnaire survey was used to find out if the blended approach has benefited the students in terms of meeting their language and personal needs. The findings revealed that the students viewed this approach favourably though slow internet connectivity was a problem.

Although blended learning has long been recognized in the field of English language teaching, it is often claimed that it has not reached its optimal level of effectiveness in this area. This study aims to examine teachers' and students' perceptions of the design of blended learning in English language courses. The study participants consisted of five English teachers, each of whom had over a year of experience in teaching blended learning courses, and thirty-six students majoring in English. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews with teacher participants and focus group interviews with student participants. The interviews were conducted using both face-to-face and phone conversations; each interview lasted about one hour. The focus group interviews were conducted with four to five student participants at a time, and each interview lasted about one hour. Conversations with both the teacher and student participants were conducted in their first language to allow for greater insight. The data from the interviews were transcribed and coded using Atlast.ti, and they were then analyzed using content analysis. To validate the results, the emergent themes were reviewed by the participants. The results revealed that both teachers and students were ready for this new form of language teaching. What is needed is teachers' professional training on how to design blended learning courses beyond the course management system level and how to raise and maintain students' motivation for online learning. Unsurprisingly, teachers are viewed as the main agents in enabling successful English language learning.

The importance of blended learning has been emphasised during the current restriction caused by the coronavirus diseases 2019 (COVID-19). But there is a scarcity of studies on students’ learning experience in blended learning, particularly using WhatsApp as one of the learning tools. A combination of classroom meetings and online learning is implemented in a vocational university in Indonesia. The research reported in this article aims to examine students’ perceptions of their learning experience in a blended method of learning incorporating social media WhatsApp and Google Classroom application as learning instruments. The dataset includes a questionnaire consisting of a four-point Likert scale and open-ended questions, a recording of WhatsApp chat history, and students' work in Google Classroom. Data analysis uses a multi-methods approach. Descriptive analysis is used for the closed-ended questions using the Excel program and content analysis for the open-ended questions. Resu...
The Teaching and Learning of English For Academic Purposes in Blended Environment
Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2012
Learners and educators worldwide have been exposed to new information and communication technologies in order to stimulate and further enhance the learning process. The introduction of blended learning environment using learning management system (LMS) chosen by universities can indeed bring about positive impact on students' performance in their studies. This study was a blended learning pilot project for English for Academic Purposes. This study examined the students' perception, engagement and performance in the blended learning environment. A total of 963 students and 23 lecturers of Universiti Teknologi MARA Melaka took part in this study for the July-November 2010 academic semester. The study was both exploratory and experimental in nature. A set of questionnaire was used to gather students' perception, examination of students and lecturers' interaction in idiscussion was done to determine students' engagement and t-tests were carried out to seek the difference of students' performance between the blended learning group and the face-to-face group. Results of frequency count from the questionnaire showed that the students viewed blended learning positively. There were also signs of engagement in the learning environment from the examination of i-discussion.. However, their reservation was on the lack of technical support and the inefficiency of the LMS system. As for the students' performance, it was reported that there was no significant difference between students who involved in blended learning and those students who did not. Based on the analysis of this study, a number of implications have been drawn regarding the use of blended learning in the EAP course suggesting that, blended learning is a viable method to be utilized for this course.
