ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN BRAZIL: CRITICISM ABOUT THE TRANSVERSALITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (Atena Editora)

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN BRAZIL: CRITICISM ABOUT THE TRANSVERSALITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (Atena Editora), 2022

Thinking about meeting the needs of the present without compromising environmental resources for future generations is the praxis (action-reflection-action) of dealing with the environment. If the act of teaching brings learning as a consequence, most probably the Environmental Education, if inserted in the educational levels, would bring about changes in fact, in the way of life and socially aware the learners. If we do not see certain changes today, we conclude that in some way the educational practice of environmental awareness is not functional. It requires a deeper analysis on the means and paths for an effectively qualitative environmental education. Thinking about the environment today means thinking in a prospective and complex way, introducing new variables into the ways of conceiving the globalized world, nature, society, knowledge and mainly the modalities of social relations, in order to act in a solidarity and fraternal way, the search for a new model of development.

Forty years of environmental education in the portuguese democracy

New Horizons in Education, 2014

Since the 1970's, education is internationally recognized as the main path to tackle the growing environmental crisis. In Portugal, forty years after engaging in Democracy and, at the same time, in Environmental Education, it still a matter of discussion and calls for an analysis on the path that have been followed. Despite a reality since the very beginning of Democracy in Portugal, after the 25th April 1974, it was only in 1986, with the accession to the European Economic Community and the publication of the Portuguese Education System Law, that Environmental Education started to be included in the goals of Public School. However, since then, the course of Environmental Education has been driven mostly by external forces, from outside the education system, and has been more dependent on the involvement of teachers, individually, than on the school institution as an all. In a time in which Portuguese Public School, as many other State public services, is deeply affected by an ongoing process of "slimming" due to the financial and economic crisis, we need to understand the Environmental Education past decade's route and analyze the most probable consequences due to the current situation.

Big History in the Ecuadorian Educational System: Theory, Practice, and Public Policies of Environmental Education

Journal of Big History, 2019

The main objective of this paper is to describe two eco-pedagogical experiences developed with the Environmental Education Program of Educator, using Big History as theoretical framework. A transdisciplinary methodology is used to integrate scientific knowledge with ancestral wisdom, in order to combine an ecology of epistemes. Hence, the study reflects about the intercultural, plurinational, and multiethnic nature of the Ecuadorian citizenship to understand the environmental practices of those ancient worldviews. As result, the article reflects about the theory, practice, and public policies of the Environmental Education Program ‘Tierra de Todos’ developed by the Ministry of Education in Ecuador. In harmony with the Ecuadorian’s Constitution of 2008, that recognized the Rights of Nature, this program has been implemented in all the Ecuadorian Educational System to raise environmental awareness and to restore the ecosystems. This juridical framework is based in the Good Living, a philosophical and political worldview of kiwicha indigenous peoples of Andean Region, where human beings are interconnected with our planet Earth and the whole cosmos. As main conclusion, the Environmental Education Program seeks to bio-literate citizens to face the complex civilizing challenges of the Anthropocene, by teaching how to feel-think-act in harmony with the co-evolutionary processes of nature.

Environmental education research in Brazil: some highlights from theses and dissertations

Environmental Education Research, 2019

This article discusses an analysis of abstracts of Brazilian theses and dissertations on environmental education from a database organised and maintained by a group of researchers in the EArt Project (www.earte. net). In presenting extracts of key trends in this dataset, our aim is to provide a snapshot of the many possible approaches to, and histories of, Brazilian environmental education research. The data also allow us to raise some questions that explore possible 'blank spots', 'blind spots' and 'bald spots' in Brazilian research on environmental education. Given the temporal development of the research field since the 1980s, we illustrate these 'spots' by exploring data related to epistemological and methodological diversity, from the viewpoint of knowledge areas as well as the graduate programmes that have been developing research on environmental education. Finally, we draw a picture of the methodological trends that have been privileged by Brazilian researchers, and pose questions as to what is needed in shaping an agenda for research on environmental education in Brazil into the future.

Challenges and Importance of Environmental Education in the Education System in Portugal

The present work aims to analyze themes that address the importance of Environmental Education, in schools, today, facing the problems of the contemporary world. There is a consensus around the importance of Environmental Education in the school community, which requires environmental training for citizens and also training that better trains professionals linked to education. Sometimes the current model of Environmental Education seems to be deficient and does not satisfy the current training needs, either due to the lack of qualified teachers and the ability to articulate the set of knowledge, attitudes and environmental sensitivity in the existing disciplines. This article seeks to discuss the challenges of Environmental Education as a transversal theme in Portuguese reality.

2016

This text seeks to present reflections resulting from a doctorate research focused on the analysis, through action-research, of school projects in environmental education developed as part of in-service teacher education, and their contributions to the constitution of new knowledges and didactic-pedagogical procedures for the study of the environment and for the exercise of citizenship. Aiming at the construction of the geo-scientific perspective at school, the environmental education projects made use of different field practices based on remote sensing (satellite images, aerial photography and maps) to (re)cover knowledge from the place of study, with the purpose of building an integrated view of the socio-environmental reality based on the establishment of dialectic relations between the local and the global as a support to the analysis of problems, of their repercussions and implications on different scales of observation. The development of the projects created the opportunity ...
