Background: The 2019 corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused havoc worldwide and is a public health emergency of international concern. India is also going through a challenging situation as the number of COVID-19 cases is increasing day by day. The Indian Government imposed strict preventive measures and restrictions in the form of nationwide lockdown on 25th March, 2020 to retard the spread of the virus. The aim of this study is to survey the general public in India for exploring the impact of lockdown on the mental health of individuals. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey design was created using the free software Google Forms®. Survey was conducted from 15th April to 25th April 2020. A total of 5459 individuals met the inclusion criteria and the data is analysed using statistics software IBM SPSS (Version 25). Chi square test has been used to determine correlation between demographic data and mental state in lockdown during Covid-19 pandemic. P value <0.05, is considered significant. Results: Increased anxiety is seen age group of 41-50 (p value 0.015), 51-60 (p value 0.002), self employed (p value <0.001), persons staying alone (p value <0.001), persons staying in containment zones (p value <0.001) and in persons who knew any positive case in their friend / family circle (p value <0.001). Apprehension of financial loss is statistically significant for self employed (p value <0.001), persons employed in private job (p value <0.001) and those in age group of 31-40 (p value <0.001). Fear of diminishing essential supplies is significant in home makers (p value 0.006). Fear of infection is more in retired persons (p value 0.001) and in age group above 60 years (p value 0.03). Fear of death is significant in persons above 70 years of age (p value 0.007). There is no statistically significant effect on interpersonal relations. Conclusion: This study shows association between lockdown during COVID-19 and anxiety and other apprehensions in Indian population. These findings need further research to identify communities at high risk of destabilized mental health so that interventions can be planned. Health authorities could consider providing online psycho education through social media or TV programs.

The Covid-19 Crisis in India

Books & Ideas, 2020

The lockdown in reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic will have terrible consequences on an informal economy that relies first and foremost on movements and will deepen the socioeconomic inequalities that divide the country. The risk of people dying from hunger is extremely high and the death toll worsened by poor health infrastructures. In December, while Wuhan province was witnessing the beginning of the actual Covid-19 pandemic, India was facing massive and violent uprisings. Hundreds of thousands of Indians protested all over the country against the discriminatory anti-Muslim citizenship law that had just been passed by its parliament-the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)-and as a backlash violent attacks occurred on universities and Muslim working-class neighbourhoods by armed vigilantes. All this while the authorities were negating the presence of community transmission of the virus despite the first cases appearing way back in January to finally declare a 21-day lockdown on the midnight of 24 March, with only a 4 hour notice. This announcement, as in France, has triggered migration from the cities to the countryside, but of a completely different nature: in India, the internal migrant workers, day labourers and the poor-deprived of resources-have decided to return to their native villages. This tragic and deadly exodus of migrants fleeing cities is the most visible stigmata of the profound health, economic and social crisis that this threefold essay offers to analyse.

Social Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic and Lockdown in India

COVID-19 has significantly altered the social fabric of society. This paper studies the impact of COVID-19 and lockdown on water, sanitation, essential goods, human psychology, behaviour, and crime rate in India. It describes the correlations between each of these aspects and the lockdown and assesses the impact of these factors in different regions as the lockdown continues or the virus spreads. We start by highlighting the factors that affect the supply of clean water during the lockdown and move on to describing how different sanitation scenarios could impact the lockdown. Continuing the lockdown could have a major effect on water supply and effective sanitation, which could, in turn, play an important role in the spread (or control) of COVID-19. In these tough times, when 133 crore people are in absolute lockdown, it becomes imperative that the supply of essential goods and services does not get disrupted. However, there are a lot of gaps and irregularities in the current supply chain system, which lead to huge distribution problems, ultimately causing discomfort to the citizens. We analyse and provide insights into the factors causing these gaps. Another aspect that has been studied in this paper is the correlation between lockdown and human psychology and behavioural patterns. Even people having a safe place to stay inside their homes may develop psychological conditions during the lockdown. It's important to study the impact of pandemics on human behavioural psychology and psycho-social aspects. Similarly studying the reaction and behaviour of people to the control measures taken by the authorities is an important factor to consider while making decisions. Finally, the lockdown duration has seen a wave of certain types of crimes on the rise. The crime rate needs to be supervised and controlled to have a healthy and safe society. We study the impact of the temporal and spatial factors that enable different types of crimes occurring or increasing during the lockdown so that authorities can take better measures to prevent them. Studying these aspects not only helps the authorities to make better decisions but also be prepared for any such pandemics in the future. It also helps the people to be well-informed and stay safe.
