Understanding Islamic Ethics and Its Significance on the Character Building
International Journal of Social Science and Humanity, 2013
The most critical challenge facing Muslim today is the lack of the spiritual ethical dimension of life, and one of the most powerful means to overcome this problem is the adherence to the code of ethics. This paper attempts at clarifying the concept of Islamic ethics as a basic pillar for a healthy society. It explains about the need of ethics for the development of individual and society, and its significance on the character building. The author tries to present ethics as the counter part of other sciences, such as, law, politics, science, economics, and others for such sciences become soulless or insignificant if detached from ethics. The paper concludes that Muslim character should develop along with Islamic ethics and its application into daily affairs of Muslims' lives should be given its due attention. Index Terms-Ethics and morality, Islamic ethics, character building I. INTRODUCTION: DEFINITIONS AND SOURCES OF ISLAMIC ETHICS Islamic ethics is being defined as akhlaq (plural of khuluq) which means character, nature, and disposition. The word akhlaq has a very close relationship with the word khaliq (the Creator) and makhluq (the creature). Therefore, akhlaq assumes a good relationship between khaliq(the Creator) and makhluq (the creature), and between makhluq (the creature) and makhluq (the creature) themselves. The term khuluq appears in the Qur'anic verse "And You (Muhammad) are on an exalted standard of character" 1. Khuluq (akhlaq) or character has been referred as the state of the soul that determines human actions. It is neither the soul nor the action. Such character could be acquired through training and practice [1]. In addition, to differentiate between the words character and action, character is the internal and hidden state of the soul, while action is its outward manifestation. Character or akhlaq is the inward cause while action is its outward consequences. A good character hence begets good action whereas a bad character yields bad actions 2. Al-Farabi (d. 950) was to be known as the earliest great Muslim philosopher who acknowledged the interrelation of akhlaq or the state of the soul with human action 3. Indeed, he defined Manuscript
The heart of the Qurʾan : an introduction to Islamic spirituality
2003
The Heart of the Qur'an: An Introduction to Islamic Spirituality Lex Hixon "Neither as Christians or Jews, nor simply as intellectually responsible individuals," says Hixon, "have members of Western civilization been sensitively educated or even accurately informed about Islam." As tensions between America and the Middle East grow, we should promote cross-cultural understanding, not violence. This new edition, with a new foreword and commentary by Neil Douglas-Klotz, allows the reader to drink from the illuminating fountain of the Holy Qur'an-the foundation of Islamic culture. First published in 1988, Hixon's poetic meditations on over nine-hundred passages from the Qur'an show that they are not relics from the past but exist in a timeless present, communicating as vividly as when they were first uttered. Through clear and accessible language, Hixon illustrates how the teachings of Islam can be applied to contemporary everyday life issues such as love, relationships, justice, work, and self-knowledge. In addition to the selections themselves, the book contains readable, lively introductions to the tradition of Islam, its basic precepts, and what it says about other religions. As the first such work in English to be written by a Muslim, The Heart of the Qur'an continues to show that Islam is among the great wisdom traditions of humanity.

There is no separate discipline of ethics in Islam, and the comparative importance of reason and revelation in determining moral values is open to debate. For most Muslims, what is considered halāl (permitted) and harām (forbidden) in Islam is understood in terms of what God defines as right and good. There are three main kinds of values: (a) akhlāq, which refers to the duties and responsibilities set out in the shari‘ah and in Islamic teaching generally; (b) adab, which refers to the manners associated with good breeding; and (c) the qualities of character possessed by a good Muslim, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad. Among the main differences between Islamic and western morality is the emphasis on timeless religious principles, the role of the law in enforcing morality, the different understanding of rights, the rejection of moral autonomy as a goal of moral education, and the stress on reward in the Hereafter as a motivator of moral behavior. An Islamic life system c...

Ethical Principles of the Islamic Faith – Insights for the Modern World
Business and Management Research, 2018
The Islamic faith is viewed by many across the world with limited understanding and the image of Muslims has been tarnished by radical members of that religion whose actions do not reflect the religion’s core beliefs. Because Muslims represent the world’s second largest religious group with more than 1.6 billion adherents, understanding the ethical principles of the Islamic faith is in the interest of others throughout the world who live, do business, and/or associate with Muslims. In this paper we examine principles of the Islamic faith, as set forth in the Qu’ran and the Sunnah, and compare them with twelve other well-recognized ethical perspectives, comparing differences and similarities. We suggest that understanding the tenets of the Islamic faith will enable others to interact more effectively with Muslims as colleagues, business associates, and community members.

SUBJECT & OBJECTIVES: Faith and righteous deeds are common concepts in the Holy Qur’an that are often used together. Hence, the question is to know what results can be obtained in life with faith and righteous deeds. This question includes benefit and purpose, earthly or supernatural consequences, immediate or delayed results, and individual and social effects. METHOD & FINDING: The article benefitted from a logical-analytical method. Conceptual, propositional, and systemic approaches analyzed the lifestyle and the relationship between belief and righteous deeds in the exegeses (Tafasir) of the Qur’an. Furthermore, this article used the comparative approach to classify the exegetical perspectives. Various studies have been applied in the article including the study of the effects of faith and righteous deeds, the connection between faith and righteous deeds as well as their impacts and consequences through establishing cause and effect between faith and righteous deeds as well as implications and proposal of a hypothesis that would require a methodological approach to the study. CONCLUSION: Faith and righteous deeds are the two wings of human promotion to attain humanity, and understand the Caliphate of God. To achieve purpose and dignity in the teachings of the Holy Qur’an, righteous deeds are the outward reflection of true faith. The combination and impact of the two vital elements of faith and righteous deeds in the soul and personality of man is stable.
