TOLERANCE TO ABIOTIC FACTORS IN MUDSNAILS (HYDROBIIDAE). [1978] (original) (raw)

ABSTRACT. The tolerance to high temperature, desiccation, anoxia and sulphide was studied in three congeneric species of mud snails, Hydrobia ulvae, H. neglecta and H. ventrosa. On an overall basis Hydrobia ulvae was the most tolerant and H. ventrosa the least tolerant species when judged on basis of the survival LD50. On this experimental background, fluctuations in species composition and number of individuals are analyzed for sympatrically occurring Hydrobia ventrosa and H. neglecta in a brackish water pool. Differential mortality due to extreme environmental stress can in part explain the unstable equilibrium of the two species in the study area. [1978. H. Heidemann Lassen and J.
