Abstract

This essay aims to study the austro-papal relations between the elec- tion of Pope Pius VII (March 1800) and the signing of the treaty of Lunéville (February 1801). Firstly, I describe the aftermath of the conclave, the three- month stay of Pius VII in Venice, during which he ruled the Church with the assistance of acting Secretary of State Consalvi and part of the Sacred College. Then I analyse the first months of activity of the restored papal government in Rome. Now cardinal Secretary of State, Consalvi tried to resolve economic and food supply problems of the Papal State (occupied by Austrian and Neapolitan troops) and to reintegrate the Holy See in the European diplomatic system. Roman focus on Vienna waned after the battle of Marengo and the beginning of the negotiation for an agreement between the Pope and the First Consul Bonaparte. I especially focus on the role played by different actors of Papal diplomacy, the Pope, the Secretary of State and the other cardinals.
