Science Education for Students with Intellectual Disability: A Case Study
Journal of Baltic Science Education
Scientific literacy is a principle objective of education almost in every country. It is mostly underlined in science education. Science education helps students become more productive individuals with the knowledge they acquire by promoting their thinking and learning skills and these skills help individuals to improve their scientific literacy. This research aims to determine the needs and problems in teaching science & technology course in a special education middle school, attended by students with mild intellectual disability. This is a case study based on collecting and analyzing qualitative data. Semi-structured interviews, conducted with two teachers, 11 students, and their parents, researcher’s diary, in class artifacts, field notes, and video recordings were used to depict the situation in the science & technology course mentioned above. The data were analyzed through content analysis via Nvivo 10. Research findings display that the school in which this research study took...

In this theoretical study, we combined two approaches regarding the education of teachers in the field of teaching pupils with special needs with focus on teaching natural science topics, in Slovenia and in the Part of Northern Cyprus, respectively. We analysed syllabuses for different study programmes for teachers in primary schools in selected faculties in Slovenia. We focused on the specific content in those subjects, which are developing competences of students to be able to teach natural science topics, in particular physics topics, in primary schools in the adequate way, so the pupils with special needs can achieve the same goals as the other pupils. In addition, we included some accents regarding the children with special needs from approach to this topic at Near East University. We find out that the integrated content in the study programmes for the requirements of the inclusion of pupils with special needs in primary school is not sufficient or the inclusion in primary schools is planned too broad, if we take into account the current state of knowledge of the students in this specific field.
School Actvities in Natural Sciences for Students with Special Needs in Bulgaria
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities, 2011
This study discusses the influence of classroom activities in the mainstream schools and special schools in Bulgaria. The study presents classroom activities related to the school subject Human and Nature. This school subject is part of the curriculum both at special and at mainstream schools. There are detailed explanations and descriptions as well as concrete methodological directions for each classroom activity. Some photographs are included in the text in order to achieve better visualization of the classroom activities described. The developed classroom activities in Natural Sciences for students with special needs, are just a small step in the understanding of the idea that all learners, regardless of their impairments, can participate in the learning process. This is in accord with the initiative of most nations to place more emphasis on the education of people with special needs, supporting their explorative aspirations and desire to know the surrounding world.

Learning media is one of the important things in the child's learning process. The purpose of this study is to determine the teacher's needs of learning media for children with special needs with mild mental retardation in science learning. This research technique uses a qualitative descriptive research method by conducting a needs analysis. The research subject is a teacher at a special school who teaches mild mental retardation. The results showed that the used learning media were not varied. Based on the explanation above, the development of media really needs to be conducted by the teacher. The conclusion of this study found that the learning media used by teachers in science learning still needs to be developed.

The curriculum is a tool to achieve national goals, making it as a reference in formulating goals in the learning process that must be achieved by each student. Each student has different needs in the learning process due to its different potentialities. Different from general students, students with special needs (SSNs) are students who need special education and services in the learning process especially in science learning. The science education curriculum for SSNs is important to be understood becauseall students need to get the same goal to achieve the national goals in the curriculum. However, SSNs had limitations and problems to achieve the goals, especially comparing to general students. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the curriculum in vocational high schools on science education for SSNs. Data on the national curriculumfor science subjectat the culinary vocational school were identified and investigated. Culinary Study was the main focus since most S...
Examining the implementations related to teaching science to students with disabilities
Eurasia Journal of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education
This study presents a systematic review of research on teaching science to children with disabilities, highlighting the significance of providing a high-quality science education to promote equity and inclusion. Science education enables students to investigate the natural world, cultivate critical thinking, and solve problems. Teaching science to children with disabilities presents unique challenges, including diverse learning requirements, the availability of resources, and effective teaching practices. This review seeks to investigate the Scopus database’s literature, identify patterns, trends, and knowledge gaps, and identify potential areas for future research, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive, scientifically driven society. Initial screening of 420 publications based on predetermined criteria resulted in the selection of 50 publications. 18 publications were declared appropriate for inclusion in the study after a thorough review of their full texts. This qualitative...

Despite the effort to provide equal scenarios and a higher inclusion for students with mild disabilities, few experimental activities intended to improve their science performance were reported during the last decades. This work presents different ludic-experimental activities and their impact on children and adolescents with special educational needs and/or disabilities related to the chemistry in the human body. The workshop was specifically designed considering contents included in the curriculum design of different schools with special modality. The constructivism strategy proposed in this workshop enhances the inclusion of children and adolescents with mild disabilities in the scientific area. The idea of educational inclusion transcends the concept of integration-physical inclusion and implies the use of the same scenarios for everybody. The workshop showed that students participated in the different activities observing, reproducing, and understating phenomena of daily life. ...
Science Education and Students with Learning Disabilities
Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, 2011
Students with learning disabilities (LD) are increasingly expected to master content in the general education curriculum, making the need for effective instructional supports more important than ever before. Science is a part of the curriculum that can be particularly challenging to students with LD because of the diverse demands it places on cognitive performance. In this summary we review a number of strategies that have been validated for learners with LD. The strategies include supports for (a) verbal learning of declarative information, (b) processing information in texts, (c) activities-based instruction/experiential learning, (d) scientific thinking and reasoning, and (e) differentiated instruction. We also summarize the research regarding the impact of teacher behavior on achievement for students with LD in science education. The strategies reviewed yield tangible and positive effect sizes that suggest that their application to the target domain will substantially improve outcomes for students with LD in science education.
