Psychoanalysis and Social Interface: Brazilian Projects

The authors present five projects of the Program for Psychoanalysis and Social Interface of the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of Rio de Janeiro (PROPIS/SBPRJ-BRAZIL), developed together with several social institutions and outside the classical psychoanalytical setting. Despite the setting, these projects center on sustaining psychoanalytical rigor in technical innovations. The authors believe that projects such as these can contribute to improving mental health and social links in contemporary society.

‘No memory, no desire’: Psychoanalysis in Brazil during Repressive Times

Until recently, the growth and significance of Brazilian psychoanalysis has been neglected in histories of psychoanalysis. Not only is this history long and rich in its professional and cultural dimensions, but there was an especially important ‘event’ – the so-called ‘Cabernite-Lobo affair’ – that took place during the period of the military dictatorship, which can be seen as dramatizing some of the issues concerning the erasure of memory in psychoanalysis, especially in connection with political difficulties. In this paper, we provide an outline of the origins and dissemination of psychoanalysis in Brazil before looking again at the Cabernite-Lobo affair in order to examine in a situated way how psychoanalysis engages with political extremism, and particularly to explore the consequences of an unthinking generalization of the idea of ‘neutrality’ from the consulting room to the institutional setting. Psycho: history and a descriptivist analysis of two translations into Brazilian Portuguese / Psicose: história e análise descritivista de duas traduções para o português brasileiro

From the perspective of Translation Studies, the present article aims to study two translations of Psycho (1959), by American writer Robert Bloch, into Brazilian Portuguese, namely: Psycho (1961), translated by Olívia Krähenbühl, and Psycho (2013), translated by Anabela Paiva. Thus, the main objective of this investigation is to compare both translations in order to verify the transposition of space and the uncommon setting constructed by Robert Bloch. In addition, this work will also be concerned with studying the translation process of both objects of study, and to this end, the scheme for the analysis of translations proposed by José Lambert (2011) within the scope of Descriptive Translation Studies will be crucial. Finally, based on studies by Lanzetti et al. (2009), the translation by Krähenbühl (1961) could be classified as a translation with the predominance of domesticating tendencies, whereas the translation by Paiva (2013) could be estimated as a translation with mainly foreignizing tendencies. Both translations seem to offer solutions to lexical, syntactical, and cultural questions compatible with their production contexts and their polysystematic configurations. RESUMO Sob a perspectiva dos Estudos da Tradução, o presente artigo tem como objeto de estudo duas traduções da obra Psicose (1959), do escritor estadunidense Robert Bloch, para o português brasileiro, a saber: Psicose (1961), traduzida por Olívia Krähenbühl, e Psicose (2013), traduzida por Anabela Paiva. Sendo assim, o principal objetivo desta investigação é comparar as duas traduções, a fim de verificar a transposição do espaço e a ambientação insólita construídos por Robert Bloch nas respectivas traduções. Além disso, este trabalho também se preocupará em estudar o processo tradutório dos dois objetos de estudo e, para tal, será crucial o esquema para análise de traduções, proposto por José Lambert (2011), por meio dos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução. Por fim, com base nos estudos de Lanzetti et al. (2009), verificou-se (que?) a tradução de Krähenbühl (1961) pode ser classificada como uma tradução com a predominância de tendências domesticadoras, ao passo que a tradução de Paiva (2013) pode ser classificada como uma tradução com tendências principalmente estrangeirizadoras. Ambas as traduções parecem apresentar soluções para questões lexicais, sintáticas e culturais compatíveis com seus contextos de produção e suas respectivas configurações polissistemáticas.

The historiography of psychoanalysis in Brazil: the case of Rio de Janeiro (Historiografia da Psicanálise no Brasil: o caso do Rio de Janeiro)

The objective of this article is to analyze the background of the historiography of psychoanalysis in Rio de Janeiro. Three different phases and approaches are analyzed, based on the viewpoints of different groups of authors. The first group features authors who displayed an early interest in the subject, in the 1920´s-1930´s. The second refers to psychiatrists/ psychoanalysts who worked with mental health institutes and societies between the 1940´s and 1970´s, while the third perspective comes from the academic/university environment, from the end of the 70´s to the present. This distinction was made not only to better define the timeframe of the arrival and dissemination of psychoanalysis in Rio de Janeiro, but also to provide a better understanding of the relation between the specific professional and intellectual interests of each group and the respective historical context.

Psychoanalysis has been widely used in Brazil between the decades of 1920 and 1940 as a method for diagnosing the country’s reality. This analysis has frequently been based on the “repressed material” coming from habits and folklore of local traditions. Thus, psychoanalysis – a theory which intents to establish the subject of the unconscious, heterogeneous and singular in human sciences – has been moved of its history and singularity to the field of collective psychology, resulting in unusual interpretations about the developing national identity, and in consequent therapeutic proposals. In this article I intent do demonstrate some of the specific guidelines that tied the reception of psychoanalysis to the national identity’s construction and to modern Brazil. Therefore I present two legitimate representatives of Brazilian psychoanalysis of that period: a psychoanalyst who was a eugenics follower and a vanguard writer.

The Psychoanalytic Thought of Hélio Pellegrino (1924-1988): Initial Reflections

This theoretical study is part of a doctoral thesis and aims to investigate how the psychoanalytic thinking of Hélio Pellegrino-the Brazilian psychoanalyst, poet and writer-is structured and its ethical and political implications in the formation of psychoanalysis. We note the importance of thematic research, since there is no scientific publication that has as its object of study a systematic analysis of the author's psychoanalytic production. Furthermore, investigations of this kind contribute to the establishment of a reference bibliography on psychoanalysis in Brazil. That said, this research was developed and completed through a study of a large part of his psychoanalytic production, which is under the custody of the personal archives of the Museum of Brazilian Literature, at the Casa Rui Barbosa Foundation (FCRB). In this work, we outline some elements of the analysis found in his work, whose focus is on reflecting on the epistemological, conceptual and practical foundations of psychoanalytic theory. It has, as a constant concern, the analysis of the problems that structure Brazilian society, observed through his own reading of the Oedipus complex, the constitution of subjectivity and the social pact, in general, and in Brazil, in particular. As such, he discusses the explicit commitment of psychoanalysis in transforming the serious social problems faced by Brazil, which are related to the serious structural problems of international capitalism, and which are also reflected in the problems of the development of psychoanalytic institutions around the world.
