Athens Institute for Education and Research, 2012

The purpose of this paper is to explain the dynamics of religious tolerance that occurred in Indonesia, especially in the last decade. Indonesia is indeed one of the most pluralistic societies in terms of ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and religious diversity, in which people from various backgrounds of tribe, race, and religion live together. In terms of religion, there exist in this country the great world religions, namely Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Kong Hu Chu. With a majority Muslim population, Indonesia is also known widely as the largest Muslim country in the world. Historically, the complexity of religious identity can bring harmony. In fact, with a diverse character, Indonesia is known as a model of a tolerant country where people from different religious backgrounds can live together in harmony. In this context, Indonesia has a very popular slogan, namely "Bhineka Tunggal Ika" (Unity in Diversity). Sociologically, the relationship among religious believers full of dynamics, sometimes full of accommodations that create an atmosphere of harmony and sometimes full of confrontations that lead to disharmony. The pattern of accommodative relationship occurs when the followers of different religions emphasizes tolerance. While the emergence of a confrontational relationship due to internal factors of the religious community itself, such a narrow understanding of religious, exclusive, self-righteous, but is also influenced by external factors, such as economic inequalities and the existence of provocation from the outside. This then causes the various nuances of religious conflicts in Indonesia. Ethnic and religious diversity, on the one hand, it can be a valuable capital for the establishment of tolerance is strong, but on the other hand has tremendous potential for conflict. Potential conflicts among ethnic and religious communities are still quite open. Thus the fact then raises a new problem of the dialectical relationship among religious and sometimes problematic. The problem was indeed a wedge that is long enough, especially in a plural society like Indonesia.

Religious Conflicts and a Culture of Tolerance: Paving the Way for Reconciliation in Indonesia

Antropologi Indonesia, 2014

1 I am grateful to Patrick Guinness, Alan Rumsey and Brigid Ballard for their constructive comments and suggestions on previous drafts. Religious Conflict in Indonesia: Crisis of Tolerance and Violations

Metafora: Education, Social Sciences and Humanities Journal, 2022

The crisis of religious tolerance and human rights violations against the Ahmadiyah congregation that occurred in Sintang are examples of violations of freedom of religion and belief in Indonesia. This sad and concerning incident indirectly indicates that Indonesian society is increasingly conservative and proves that acts of intolerance and discrimination based on religion are increasing and happening more intensely, even during a pandemic like today. This article aims to describe the forms of human rights violations against the Ahmadiyah congregation in Indonesia and provide an overview of alternative solutions to religious conflicts in Indonesia. This study uses a literature study method sourced from several scientific literature. The data analysis technique used in this study is the Miles and Huberman model analysis. This study found that acts of human rights violations depicted in religious conflicts between the majority of Muslims and the Ahmadiyah congregation in Indonesia occur in various forms, ranging from discrimination through verbal and psychological actions to physical violence and restrictions on public access to Ahmadiyya congregation. The alternative solution that can be applied to overcome this tolerance crisis is education, especially with interreligious multicultural education that allows open dialogue. From this, it can foster attitudes and behaviors of mutual respect between fellow religious people in the frame of diversity.

The Roots of Religious Moderation in Indonesia: As-Singkili and Langgien’s Works on Tolerance

Proceedings of the International Symposium on Religious Literature and Heritage (ISLAGE 2021), 2022

People could not practice religious moderation in full without understanding its historical roots. These roots entail an examination of actors involved in its development. In Indonesia, a vital actor is an ulama, who has taught and practiced moderation in this region's history. An indicator of this moderation is the existence of tolerance in society which harmony is maintained, and conflicts are minimized. This study examined the idea of tolerance developed, taught, and exemplified by As-Singkili and Langgien, two Aceh ulama who lived before Indonesia's independence. This study uses qualitative methods with a historical and anthropological approach. By scrutinizing their handwritten works, this study found that moderate attitude and action by prioritizing tolerance have always been the default positions of these ulama over time. Limited to the study of two Aceh ulama in the past, subsequent research should be conducted on other religious figures who cultivate these roots of tolerance. By doing so, present and future generations could strengthen their religious moderation, valuing tolerance to guide their attitude and actions.

SEEKING INTERSECTION OF RELIGIONS: An Alternative Solution to Prevent the Problem of Religious Intolerance in Indonesia

Indonesia consisted of multiculture, ethnic and religion. There are six legal religions in Indonesia. Religious plurality is part of Indonesian life. In Religion, adherents always tried to compare between their own religion with other religions that can cause a truth claim of superiority of their religion. This caused any conflict like the case of GKI Yasmin in Bogor, three massive bomb blasts of Bali, and conflict of Ambon. This is a library reseach applying sosiological approach. To analyze the problem, author used the conflict theory of Gillin and Gillin saying that conflict can be caused by deferences. Therefore, it is necessary to understand how the intersection of religions in order to prevent the conflict, included religious intolerence. This research find that the intersection of religion can be found in values of humanity or the horizontal aspect (ḥabl min al-nās). While the vertical aspect (ḥabl min Allāh), they are different. By understanding the intersection of religions and nature of these differences, it is expected that religious harmony can be reinforced.
