Introduction: Given the negative impacts of dialysis, we must assess and comprehend the psychological factors that affect quality of life and emotional health in dialysis patients. Objectives: We sought to evaluate the most commonly used coping mechanisms during the first year of treatment and to analyse the influence of these strategies on quality of life and emotional health. Material and Method: Longitudinal study of 98 incident patients on haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. We interviewed patients at 1, 6, and 12 months after starting dialysis using the MOS-SF36, PNA (affectivity), and Coping Strategies questionnaires. Results: The most commonly used strategies were Information search, Problem solving, Cognitive restructuring, Delegation, and Regulated expression of emotions (P<.001). Adaptive coping strategies were used more frequently than Avoidance coping strategies (P<.01); these differences did not vary over time. Initially, Avoidance was a predictor for a stronge...
The relationship between coping, emotion regulation, and quality of life of patients on dialysis
The International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine, 2017
Previous studies have investigated constructs that facilitate adaptation to chronic disease and improve quality of life and constructs that lead to psychopathological complications. The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of coping and emotional regulation on the quality of life of patients on dialysis. Three questionnaires were administered to 78 patients on dialysis: Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced, Short Form (36), and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Regressions analyses indicated that age, Rumination, Positive Refocusing, Avoidance Strategies, Approach to the Problem, and Transcendent Orientation predicted Physical Health. With regard to Mental Health, the predictors were gender, Self-Blame, Acceptance, Rumination, Positive Reappraisal, Catastrophizing, Avoidance Strategies, and Transcendent Orientation. This study confirms the relationship between emotional regulation, coping, and quality of life. The results highlight the need for tota...
Stressful factors, coping mechanisms and quality of life in hemodialysis patients
Journal of Critical Care Nursing, 2013
Level of quality of life in hemodialysis patients change following stressful factors. Patients use different coping mechanisms in order to deal with stressful factors. The aim of this study was to determine stressful factors, coping mechanisms and quality of life among hemodialysis patients. Methods: This descriptive analytic study was done on 113 hemodialysis patients in Babol's Shahid Beheshti hospital in 2010-2011. The data collection tools included questionnaire of hemodialysis stressful factors information (HSS), Jalowice & Powers coping methods and quality of life Index of Parila et al. in order to analyze data, descriptive analytical statistics (Independent Ttest, variance and Pearson 's analysis and SPSS 17 software had been used. Results: 50.4% of the patients were male. The age range of the patients was 87-18. The results showed that there was significant relationship between age with physiological stressful factors (p=0.050) and there was significant relationship between residency and psychological stressful factors) and between important activities of life and variables of occupation and marital status (p=0.000 both). In dealing with stressful factors patients mostly used emotion-oriented coping methods, and there was positive and linearly relationship between emotion-oriented coping methods with psycho and social stressful factors (p=0.000 and p=0.009). There was positive and linear relationship between problem-oriented coping methods with aspects of overall quality of life and also there was significant inverse relationship between emotion-oriented coping methods with important activities of life, overall quality of life and physical condition. Conclusions: By identifying the stressful factors in hemodialysis patients, it is possible to have more valuable step through more effective nursing services and producing basic programs such as psychology counseling for strengthening problem-oriented coping mechanisms and improving their quality of life.
Quality of life (QOL) is an important outcome among end-stage renal disease patients and can be associated with modifiable behaviors. We analyzed the correlation between coping style and QOL among hemodialysis patients. We studied 166 end-stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis. They were older than 18 years, under hemodialysis for at least 3 months, and had never received a transplant. Quality of life was assessed by SF-36 and coping style was scored by the Jalowiec Coping Scale. Emotion-oriented coping and problem-oriented coping scores were compared according to sex, comorbidity, and socioeconomic status by the Mann-Whitney test. Correlations between QOL and 2 coping styles (emotion-oriented coping and problem-oriented coping) were adjusted for age, time on dialysis, hemoglobin, creatinine, albumin, calcium–phosphorus product, and Kt/V by backward stepwise linear regression. There was no difference between coping scores according to sex, comorbidity, and socioeconomi...
Relationships among coping, comorbidity and stress in patients having haemodialysis
Journal of Advanced Nursing, 2008
Title. Relationships among coping, comorbidity and stress in patients having haemodialysis. Aim. This paper is a report of a study to examine relationships among stress, coping and comorbidity and test the interaction effect of comorbidity. Background. Haemodialysis imposes a variety of physical and psychosocial stressors that challenge patients. Comorbidity is a risk factor for many health outcomes. Research on how comorbidity influences the relationship between coping and stress is limited. Method. In this cross-sectional study, conducted from October 2002 to January 2003, 2642 patients, who had been having haemodialysis for at least 3 months, were interviewed by nursing managers in the 27 participating centres. The Haemodialysis Stressor Scale measured stressors and the Jalowiec Coping Scale were used to measure coping strategies. Hierarchical regression was used to analyse the data. Results. Haemodialysis patients with comorbidities were found to have higher levels of stress. Comorbidity had a moderating effect between choice of problemoriented responses and isolated thoughts as coping strategies. These findings show that haemodialysis patients with comorbidities often choose positive coping strategies. Conclusion. Comorbidity not only has a direct impact on stress but also has a moderating effect on the relationship between coping and stress. Comorbidity may hold the key to healthcare professionals' understanding of why patients having haemodialysis perceive different levels of stress and use various coping strategies. A personalized programme may be needed for each patient based on their different levels of comorbidity.
Stressors and Coping strategies in dialysis patients
Journal of Critical Care Nursing, 2014
Aims: Considering the increasing rate of hemodialysis patients, different results of previous studies, human’s constant interaction with the environmental changes and living in today’s modern world, people are exposed to a barrage of constant changes and stressors. These changes in chronic renal failure patients comparing to healthy individuals are more and different. The type of coping strategies used by the people depend on several factors including personal experience, social support systems, personal beliefs, available resources and genetic background .The study aimed to “identifying the type of experienced stressors and coping strategies used by hemodialysis patients”. Methods: In this descriptive correlational study, Hemodialysis Stressors Scale (HSS) and Jalowiec Coping Scale (JCS) were used to investigate stressors and coping strategies of 70 hemodialysis patients hospitalized in hospitals supervised by Medical Sciences University of Jiroft in 2013. Sampling was done through...
An investigation of coping styles of hemodialysis patients
Iranian journal of nursing and midwifery research, 2013
Hemodialysis patients are exposed to different stressful factors and have to use coping strategies as supportive processes. The goal of the present study is to investigate coping styles of hemodialysis patients. This is a descriptive analytical study conducted on 96 patients referring to hemodialysis centers affiliated to Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2011. The data, collected by a questionnaire including two sections of demographic characteristics and patients' coping with the disease, were analyzed by parametric and non- parametric statistical tests. Patients used emotion focused coping strategies more (mean = 20.07, SD = 4.39) to adapt with the disease compared to problem focused coping strategies (mean = 14.65, SD = 5.08). There was a significant association in coping (P = 0.027) and emotion focused dimension (P = 0.008) in various ages, but there was no significant association in problem focused dimension (P = 0.134). Since most of the hemodialysis patients use ...
