Abstract Introduction: Pre anesthetic checkup is an important prerequisite of any surgery. Therefore the importance of a detailed pre anesthetic check-up including a thorough history and clinical examination should be known to all the patients undergoing any kind of surgery. It can be gauged by the fact that missing out even a single event like a previous drug reaction may jeopardize a precious life. The aim of our study was to assess the understanding of the importance of a pre-anesthetic check-up (PAC) and its components amongst the population coming for elective surgeries in a tertiary care hospital in Urban India. Materials and Methods : A prospective randomized observational study was conducted including 450 patients (18-60yrs) coming to a tertiary hospital in a metropolitan city over a period of three months. Each patient was asked to fill out a questionnaire consisting of 16 questions in Hindi (local language)/ English in the waiting area. Every question had multiple possible choices and they had to choose one most appropriate answer according to them. Every correct answer was marked 1 while an incorrect answer was given a score of 0. Statistical Analysis: The data was expressed as percentage and frequency. The correlation tests were applied using the appropriate tests according to the latest SPSS version and included the unpaired t-tests and one way analysis of variance. Results: Out of the 450 patients, only 21.2% had the knowledge of a pre anesthetic clinic. It was also observed that only 19.4% were aware that risk assessment is done in pre anesthetic checkup for undergoing proposed surgery. 54.6% did not know about the importance of optimization before surgery. 99.2% desired to receive information about anesthesia before experiencing. Conclusion: Despite the improved literacy rate, there is a dearth of knowledge about the importance of the pre-anesthetic checkup (PAC) clinic visit before an elective surgery and the role of an anesthesiologist in the perioperative period Keywords: Preanesthetic checkup (PAC) clinic, Questionnaire, Knowledge, Anesthesiologist
GENERAL CONCERNS OF ANESTHESIA AMONG PREOPERATIVE PATIENTS IN HAIL REGION, SAUDI ARABIA
Background: There are no enough studies that focus on the major concerns among preoperative patients who will exposed to Anaesthia and lack of proper health educations about their concerns. Objective: To recognize the major concerns regarding anaesthesia preoperatively in hail region by assessing the main sources ofpreoperative patients’ distress. Knowledge Assessment Regarding Anesthesia among Saudi Community
Anesthesia is putting the patient in a state of loss of consciousness so that the surgeon to perform the surgical operation, anesthesia is an aid in the field of surgery and not a therapeutic method, which serves to spare the patient a sense of pain and thus spare the surgeon to exert more effort so as not to cause more pain to the patient. The current study aims to assess the knowledge level regarding anesthesia among the Saudi community through the distribution of a semi-structured questionnaire on a randomly selected sample (N=117). Study findings had indicated that despite the good knowledge level about the possible risks of anesthesia on patients suffering from chronic diseases and the presence of various types of anesthesia, still there is a lack of knowledge in different anesthesia aspects such as the role of the anesthesiologist and the nature of the anesthesia process. The study recommended that an intensive awareness campaign aiming to educate people about anesthesia and the role of the anesthesiologist should be performed under the supervision of the Saudi health authorities.

Tanaffos, 2007
Background: Anesthesia is peri-operative medicine. The role of anesthesiologist in the quality of care rendered to patients during the pre-operative period is well known. The role of pre-operative anesthesia clinics in providing better conditions for patients undergoing anesthesia is now well documented. This study was performed to evaluate the familiarity of Iranian patients with the aims of anesthesia clinics 10 years after the establishment of such clinics in Iran. Materials and Methods: All patients referred to anesthesia clinics in two university medical centers were evaluated during a 2-week period. A questionnaire was given to them and answers were analyzed and interpreted by statistical methods. Results: Of the 286 patients who participated in this study, 56% were males and 44% were females; 43% of them were familiar with the goals of pre-op anesthesia, 83% of the patients mentioned that pre-op evaluation was the reason of their referral and 67% gave a positive feedback on the clinic. The need for creating more motivation in patients and physicians was mentioned by 83% of the patients. Conclusion: Considering the statistical results, it seems that there is a great need to familiarize patients with the goals of these clinics and to create some motivation in them. By doing so, we can hope to offer better services to patients and reduce the anesthesia complications and anxiety.

Pre-anesthesia checkup (PAC) forms an integral part for every patient undergoing surgery. It is a valuable tool in decreasing the perioperative risk to the patient by preoperative intervention, reducing number of investigations and consultations and reducing perioperative morbidity and mortality. Patients consultation for the surgery is their first contact with the healthcare provider. So we undertook this study to detect the comorbid conditions among patients coming for preanaesthetic evaluation in developing countries have poor access to the healthcare system and it is quite often that in a secondary care hospital. A total of 110 patients were studied over a period of 10 months. Total of 31 patients (28%) had 48 medical conditions requiring further workup. Out of these 48 medical conditions, 29 (60.4 %) were known cases of medical comorbidities, whereas 19 (39.5%) were newly diagnosed at the time of PAC. Most common comorbidities were anemia and hypertension. We conclude that PAC helps in detecting previously unknown comorbidities and thus impacts perioperative management.
