Signed: ______________________________________________ Identifying Sleep Disorders 3 Abstract The problem is that the potential for intrinsic sleep disorder(s) among Stanwood Camano firefighters and support members has not been identified. The purpose of the study is to identify the potential for intrinsic sleep disorders (ISD) in the Stanwood Camano Fire Department (SCFD) members and their associated health and safety risks. To achieve this, five questions were answered: What is the number of SCFD members that tested positive for potentially having ISDs, what are the health risks associated with ISDs, how many Stanwood Camano members have previously been diagnosed with ISDs, what are the safety risks associated with ISDs and what type of sleep disorder trends were currently found in SCFD members. This included a literature review, personal interviews, and a randomly distributed questionnaire in which the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), STOP Questionnaire and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) were included. The research method used was descriptive, although upon further review of the literature, it became apparent that a survey specifically designed to address the many types of sleep disorders experienced by emergency responders was needed, resulting in action research and the development of the Firefighters Intrinsic Sleep Disorder Questionnaire (FISDQ).

BACKGROUND Sleep is a physiological process, which is essential for life. Adequate sleep is important for better cognitive performance and also to avoid health problems and psychiatric disorders. Sleep habits and disorders have been ignored in the past and are still inadequately understood. Therefore, the present study was conducted to find the sleep habits and disorders in the adolescent and adult paramedical personnel. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study population included in this analysis comprised of a total of 150 adolescent and adult paramedical personnel (BPT students: 50, BSc nursing students: 50, Nursing staff: 50). The study was conducted at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Jaipur. After obtaining informed consent, the subjects were given a questionnaire. The questionnaire used for this study was Sleep History Questionnaire (Kaplan and Sadocks Synopsis of Psychiatry, 11 th edition). RESULTS Majority of the subjects were in the age group 15-25 years and 64% were males and 36% were females. The usual time of going to bed on weekdays in all the three groups was between 9 pm-12 midnight, but on weekends/holidays it was found that almost ¼ used to go to bed after 12 midnight, but there was no change in the timing to go to bed for nursing staff group. Wakeup time on weekdays was usually 5 am-7 am, but on weekends ½ of the subjects woke up after 7 am, out of which 33% got up after 8 am. It was also observed that ¼ of the subjects took more than 20 minutes to wake up and among these 65% were from nursing staff group. Time taken to fall asleep, 66% of the subjects took more than 20 minutes to fall asleep out of which 22% took more than 30 minutes. It was also observed that there was a deficiency in total sleep time in ¼ of studied population. History of snoring was present in 15-20% and 1/3 of those complained that their sleep was disturbed by gasps, hesitations and snorts; ¼ of the subjects got up with dry mouth and headache in the morning. More than ½ of the subjects felt sleepy and unrefreshed on awakening and ¼ felt chronically sleepy and fatigued. Many of them had symptoms of insomnia, restless leg syndrome, nightmares and sleep walking.
Sleep Quality and its Main Determinants Among Staff in a Persian Private Hospital
2018
BACKGROUND Having good quality of sleep is essential to good health. Sleep disorders could incur intangible expenses. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the Persian version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-P) questionnaire administered to 3 categories of workers (clinical personnel, clerical staff, and logistics workers) in a private hospital located in Tehran, Iran. METHODS In 2017, all Pars hospital personnel were invited to participate in the study. The PSQI-P questionnaire was distributed among Pars hospital staff, who consented to take part in the study. RESULTS The total personnel in this private hospital was 1151 and 552 of them submitted their answers. According to the statistical analysis performed using SPSS version 19, there was no correlation between sleep quality and gender, marital status, age, job, shift work, or university degree (P value: 0.94, 0.42, 0.59, 0.67, 0.12, 0.23, respectively). However, participants with a lower body mass ind...

Firefighters' schedules include extended shifts and long work weeks which cause sleep deficiency and circadian rhythm disruption. Many firefighters also suffer from undiagnosed sleep disorders, exacerbating fatigue. We tested the hypothesis that a workplace-based Sleep Health Program (SHP) incorporating sleep health education and sleep disorders screening would improve firefighter health and safety compared to standard practice. Prospective station-level randomized, field-based intervention. US fire department. 1189 firefighters. Sleep health education, questionnaire-based sleep disorders screening, and sleep clinic referrals for respondents who screened positive for a sleep disorder. Firefighters were randomized by station. Using departmental records, in an intention-to-treat analysis, firefighters assigned to intervention stations which participated in education sessions and had the opportunity to complete sleep disorders screening reported 46% fewer disability days than those...
The Epidemiology of Subjective Sleep Quality in the Citizens of Kermanshah, Iran
Journal of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, 2020
Background: Subjective sleep quality plays a pivotal role in health, quality of life, and efficient performance. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of subjective sleep quality in the citizens of Kermanshah, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted on all the citizens of Kermanshah in 2017. In total, 450 subjects were selected via multistage random sampling. Based on the inclusion criteria, 416 were evaluated using a self-report questionnaire of demographic characteristics and Petersburg sleep quality index (PSQI; Baisi et al., 1989). Results: In 79% of the participants, the mean score of PSQI was above the cutoff point (m = 6.64). The analysis of the questionnaires indicated the highest frequency of sleep disorders to be in the components of subjective sleep quality from the perspective of the respondents, delayed sleep, sleep disorders, and daily functional disorders. In addition, 10.6% of the subjects used very high dose...

Introduction: Sleep disturbances are a significant public health issue and such problems are associated with a number of psychiatric disorders. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is an effective instrument frequently used to evaluate sleep style and quality. Objectives: The present study aimed to assess the reliability, validity, and factor structure of the Persian version of PSQI. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 1115 citizens of Arak City, Iran aged 18-60 years. They were selected by stratified random sampling method from different parts of the city. The following aspects of the Persian version of PSQI were evaluated to assess its validity and reliability. To assess the validity of the content, the questionnaire was sent to a panel of 15 academic members consisting of experts in the fields of psychology and health education. The internal consistency of the PSQI questionnaire was evaluated by the Cronbach alpha coefficient and item-scale correlation. To investigate the factor structure of the PSQI, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed with a 2-factor solution and varimax rotation. The extraction of principal factors was performed after varimax orthogonal rotation and Kaiser's criterion. At last, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied to assess the reliability of the PSQI questionnaire. All analyses were performed in SPSS V. 16.0 and AMOS for Windows. Results: The Persian version of PSQI was evaluated in the study with regard to its internal consistency and factor structure. The result showed excellent item content validity index (≥0.78) and excellent scale content validity index (≥0.90). The result of the Cronbach alpha coefficient was 0.65. The factors of perceived sleep quality and sleep efficiency were extracted by means of factor analysis and these two factors explained 51.75% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis results show the model's satisfactory fitting based on adequacy criteria goodness of fit index, goodness of fit index adjusted for degrees of freedom, root mean square error of approximation, and comparative fit index. The non-normed fit index was close to its reference value of 0.90. Conclusion: In general, findings suggest that the Persian version of PSQI displayed satisfactory validity and reliability to measure the quality of sleep of Iranian people, at least citizens of Arak City, Iran. Evaluation of the Quality of Sleep of the Professional Soldiers Population
Central European Journal of Sport Sciences and Medicine
The aim of this study was to identify sleep problems in a select group of professional soldiers. For the study used a questionnaire containing the Athens Insomnia Scale by Soldatos, allowing klinimetric evaluation of sleep disorders reflecting mainly insomnia. Material Data were obtained from 200 professional soldiers. The results showed no pathological abnormalities of sleep study population, however, the results show some reduction in the prevalence of symptoms of sleep quality based on the selected factors. The health status of all the soldiers experiencing combat stress requires periodic and thorough control since the diagnosis of disorders is difficult and they can appear even after a long period of lived events. This may lead to look for other ways to deal with problems; the use of psychoactive substances or drug abuse. Therefore it is extremely important to use therapeutic activities.
