Structural analysis of post-byzantine churches: a case study for southern Albania
Hundreds of masonry churches have been constructed in Albania during hundreds of years. The majority of them exist at their original location; a significant part of them are not in use any more. In this context, Roman and post -Byzantine masonry churches attract the world's special attention to this region. It is necessary to carry out systematic studies to assess an inventory and determine the state of masonry churches in Albania, to preserve them, to strengthen their basic structural elements, the arch, vault and other constructive components and soundly deliver them into the future. From this point of view, this study is aims to outline the classification of the churches built in post-Byzantine period based on the plan and spatial composition of these structures. Following this typological classification, the church of the "Monastery of Saint Nicholas" is selected as a case to investigate its structural performance. The church of the Monastery of Saint Nicholas is a domed single-nave church dating back to the 16 th -17 th century. This church is situated inside a monastery complex and it is proclaimed a monument of culture by Institute of Monuments of Culture Albania.

The article presents the history of the creation and transformation of the parish church in Szprotawa from 13th until the 20th century. The introduc- tion discusses the source references and the accesible literature – in a small extent discussing the evolution of the temple architecture. Based on architectural studies and details analyses, the most important phases of the church’s transformation have been identified. The origins of the building were erected in the 2nd half of the 13th century, when a temple composed of a rectangular choir and a threespan nave was erected. Probably in the 1st half of the 14th century, a tower with a chapel on the ground floor was built by the northern wall and in the middle of the century, the body was extended from the south by three chapels and a porch in front of the northern entrance. The 2nd half of the 14th century brought the creation of a porch connecting the church with the Madeleine convent. The highest storey of the tower with blanking was built in the middle of the 15th century. The construction of the present threenave sevenbay hall structure without a separate choir with a polygonal bypass and vaults and a twotiered sacristy was probably carried out in the years 1474–1488. After this year, two chapels: of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Passion of the Lord were built by the south elevation, and at the northern one – the Holy Cross chapel. And in 1516 the following were built: Gethsemane, Dungeon and Detenc- tion, and a lodge for the Madeleine sisters. The Renaissance transformations included narrowing of the entrance to the chapel on the ground floor of the tower, and the Baroque changes – a new interior decoration of the Holy Cross chapel, breaking through for the present entrance on the axis of the main nave, building the organ’s choir and the new tower’s helmet. In the middle of the 19th century, the decoration of the gable was changed and the western porch was introduced.
Typological Classification of Churches Constructed During Post-Byzantine Period in Albania
2015
Monumental historical structures are symbols of the cultural identity and continuity and they are the main part of the heritage and the human history. They should be preserved in their own settings with their original characteristics or with as minimum changes as possible. On the other hand, natural or man-made hazards cause a serious risk for the survival of them. They are the major points for the continuity of history. In order to conserve these buildings in their original situation and develop suitable restoration projects without neglecting any of the cultural values, it is vital to determine the current conditions of these structures. The knowledge of existing buildings is approached by considering different levels of analyses; historical, materials, typological classification and documentation, observed damage levels, effectiveness of retrofitting techniques, ..etc. In order to learn the values that we hold and the existing conditions of these buildings, the inventory of the...

SPECIFIC STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF THE BULGARIAN CHURCH ST STEFAN IN ISTANBUL
INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE BASA'2019, 2019
The Bulgarian church St Stefan (St Stephen) in Istanbul is built at the end of the XIX century. The church was produced and assembled by the Rudolph Waagner Company in the period between 1895-1896. The churches made of cast iron and steel were an outcome of the technological development and the mastering of new industrial technologies. Such churches were erected in places where the footing did not allow the construction of heavyweight buildings or when opportunities for development were absent and the circumstances were such that only the functional side of architecture was paramount, e.g., military garrisons, development of ore mines, development of new technologies in distant places, re-settlements of large Christian communities or missionary activity. In this sense the aesthetics of the industrial architecture and the latest developments in the field determined the simple design of the church buildings, among other things. Analysis and understanding the structure is relevant for the future of the church and the support of the building in good conditions for the future generations. The steel structure of the church is not unique but is an excellent example of this type of structure in the world heritage. Based on the preserved drawings of the church, the paper aims to present the basic concept of the structure and to make comments on some basic details. Some final conclusions and recommendations for the preservation of the building are given.
Architectural Forms of the Savina Monastery Big Church
Beyond the Adriatic Sea, 2015
This paper deals with the architecture of the Savina Monastery Big Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary (XVIII century) in the Boka Kotorska (Bay of Kotor). The construction, structure and appearance of the church were considered in the context of the social environment under foreign Venetian rule, the relations with the Orthodox Christian Serbian centers north of the Sava and the Danube, the spirit of the then Baroque époque, with a necessary overview of reminiscent concepts in the region. Using such an approach, we attempted to penetrate into the deeper meaning and objectives of realized forms, which undoubtedly indicate the tendency of the Savina fraternity to preserve Serbian Orthodox Christian identity in Boka in the XVIII century.
