International Journal of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, 2014

This study investigated factors influencing maladaptive behaviour in which broken home and negative attitudes of teachers serve as independent variables while maladaptive behaviour serves as dependent variable. A total of one hundred (100) participants comprising 50 males and 50 females senior secondary (high) school adolescent students between the ages of 12-16 and 17-21 and a mean age of 14 and 19 respectively were selected from the population of five secondary schools in Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria making use of randomization technique. They were administered with a 20 item questionnaire in a dichotomous response style of Yes/No. Survey design was adopted and Chi-square was applied in which results obtained revealed that broken home significantly influenced maladaptive behaviour with X 2 (1,1) = 21.16 at P<.001 and also, negative attitudes of teachers significantly influenced maladaptive behaviour with X 2 (1,1)=51.84 at P<.001. The findings were discussed with respect to literature reviewed and recommendations were made.

Parenting Styles as Determinants of Psychopathological Symptoms among Nigerian In-School Adolescents

Psychology, 2021

The controversy concerning the extent to which parental influence matters to children’s psychological and behavioural growth continues. This study investigated the influence of parenting styles on psychopathological symptoms among in-school adolescents in Ogun State, South-western Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey design method was utilized. One thousand and twenty-eight (1028) in-school adolescents with mean age ± SD of 15.30 ± 2.14, were drawn from ten secondary schools, and these responded to the Awaritefe Psychological Index (API) Form X, and the Scales for Parenting Style (SPS). A 52.1% prevalence of psychopathological symptoms was observed. A significant mean score difference was found between negligent parenting style and authoritarian parenting style in determining severities of psychopathological symptoms among adolescents. Responsive and control dimension of parenting style jointly predicted psychopathological symptoms (R2 = 0.01, F(2, 1025) = 4.36, p p p < 0.01] than t...

Child Rearing Patterns as Predictors of In-School Adolescents’ Maladaptive Behaviours in Very Low-Income Rural Communities in Nigeria

Global Journal of Health Science

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The debate about the interaction between the individual student and learning environment (home) is still ongoing and inconclusive. Parents are modelled and they establish basic patterns at home which may never stop as teens develop. This study investigated child-rearing patterns as predictors of in-school adolescents’ maladaptive behaviours in very low-income rural communities in Nigeria. METHOD: The study was a cross-sectional correlational survey. Two hundred and sixty-one parents and teachers in Enugu and Ebonyi States of Nigeria participated in the study. Teachers identified the students with Conners' Comprehensive Behavior Rating Scales (CBRS). Parents whose children were identified answered the Child Rearing Pattern Questionnaire (CRPQ). The validity of the instruments was ascertained by three experts. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to address the research questions, while the null hypotheses were analyzed using regression at an alpha lev...

The results further revealed that parental involvement has a significant influence on students being deviant, which was given by an average mean of 2.55 which is above the criterion mean of 2.50 and average standard deviation of 0.572. It was concluded that parenting is factor associated with a deviancy amongst students at Bokamoso Secondary School. Data collected were analyzed using independent t-test statistical analysis for the five null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that hypotheses one, two and three were significant at 0.05 level of significance and hence rejected. While hypotheses four and five were not significant at 0.05 level of significance and hence not rejected. Thus the implication of the findings and recommendations were also discussed.

The results of the study showed that parenting styles influence deviant behaviors and academic achievement of secondary school students. Specifically, the results of the two null hypotheses showed that the influence of parenting styles on students’ deviant behavior is significant. It was recommended that the government through the relevant agencies should ensure that parents are encouraged to participate in any parenting education programme organized by the government to help in their parenting task.

Journal of Educational Research on Children, Parents and Teachers , 2021

Aggression is characterized byvarious maladjustment behaviours with associated negative consequences on the exhibitor andothers at different magnitudes. Though literatures have unveiled various factors for these acts but there is a dearth of literature on the relative and composite contributions of bio-psychosocial variables namely, gender, personality, and parenting styles on the aggressive behaviour of pupils atlower primary school level as this was the focus of the study in Ibadan metropolis. The study adopted correlational research design of survey type. A total of 200 primary three pupils were selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. Determinants of Aggressive Behaviours Questionnaire (α=0.81) was used to gather data which were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that there is a composite relationship among gender, personality, parenting styles and aggressive behaviours among primary three pupils (R = .37; F (3; 196) = 10.10; p < 0.05). The relative contributions show that parenting styles, of all the independent variable, had a significant contribution to the aggressive behaviours of primary pupils (β = 0.35; t = 4.71; p < 0.05) among other results. It was recommended that there is a need for awareness on parenting styles that will not encourage aggressive behaviours among the pupils.
