The use of aromatherapy in alleviating anxiety
Acta Paulista De Enfermagem, 2011
Objectives: To determine how the use of essential oils (OE) Lavender and Geranium change the perception of anxiety, and to compare their effectiveness in treating anxiety. Methods: The sample included students from the first year of nursing school who were randomized into three groups: two groups received OE (in a gel polymer-based) and the other received a placebo (essence of Rose). A previously validated scale was used to assess anxiety. It was administered before the end of 30 and 60 days of use of aromatic gels. Results: The group using Lavender exhibited a reduction of-11.80 in mean scores on the anxiety scale, but this was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Although not statistically significant, there was greater efficacy of Lavender EO in reducing anxiety.
Aromatherapy for Anxiety and Stress of Nursing
2019
Objective: to investigate the effectiveness of the use of aromatherapy with essential oils of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) or ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata), associated with massage, for the relief of anxiety and stress. Method: this is a quantitative study, exploratory-descriptive and correlational with quasi-experimental design of type before and after. We performed a chart with six sessions of massage with aromatherapy with 21 teachers of nursing checked by means of psychological parameters and biophysiological, before and after each session of the intervention. There were applied, at the beginning and at the end of the intervention, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the List of Symptoms of Stress. The results were analyzed with the Student t test, whereas p-value<0.05, and organized tables that illustrate them. Results: there was found that blood pressure presented effective reduction in some aromatherapy sessions. There was observed that the stress obtained reduction...

Background: Emergency personnel are frequently exposed to high-risk physical and psychological factors that lead to increased occupational stress. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aromatherapy with rosa damascena essential oil on nurses' occupational stress in the emergency department. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted among sixty nurses in the trauma center of Besat Hospital, Tehran. The participants were selected by the convenience sampling method, and then randomly assigned to the aromatherapy with essential oil of Rosa damascena and control groups. Intervention in the experimental and control groups consisted of inhalation cotton swabs impregnated with two drops of essential oil of 40% Rosa damascena (Gole Mohammadi) and cotton soaked with two drops of distilled water as a placebo for 2 minutes, respectively. Nurses' stress level was assessed by the Nursing Stress Scale before and after the intervention. To analyze the data, independent t-test, paired t-test, and ANCOVA were performed in SPSS, version 22. Results: The mean age of the nurses was 29.07 ± 5.495 years, and the majority of them had a bachelor's degree. The results of this study showed that stress scores in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group after the intervention (p<0.0001). The effect size was-1.5, which was large and desirable. Nurses' occupational stress scores in the experimental group diminished significantly after the intervention (p=0.012). Conclusion: It is recommended to use complementary therapies such as aromatherapy with rose essential oil to reduce occupational stress in nurses. Further studies with larger sample sizes and in other occupational groups are recommended.

Background: Depression and anxiety are among the most common mental disorders before and after surgery. Aromatherapy is a treatment that has grown substantially in recent years in comparison with other complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) to relieve anxiety. Objectives: This study investigated the effect of inhaling lavender essence on the physiological and psychological status of patients who are candidates for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was performed on 60 patients who were undergoing CABG surgery at the hospitals of Artesh Jomhory Eslami (AJA) University of Medical Sciences in Iran. Patients who met specific inclusion criteria were selected and randomly allocated into two groups: a control group that inhaled room air and an experimental group that inhaled from a piece of cotton impregnated with two drops of lavender essence. This intervention was done on the morning of surgery. To evaluate these measures, a Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire was filled out by the patient before and after the intervention. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and analytic statistics. Results: After the intervention, the study results showed statistically significant differences between the two study groups in heart rate (mean = 78.83, P = 0.02) and anxiety level (mean = 6.63, P = 0.02). However, the differences between the two groups were not significant regarding stress level (mean = 8.63, P = 0.55) and other physiological variables. Conclusions: Inhalation aromatherapy is an effective method for reducing the heart rate and the level of anxiety in patients before CABG surgery. Given that the physiological and psychological health of patients are important responsibilities for nurses, aromatherapy can be considered a safe and effective relaxation method before invasive interventions. Learning this method is recommended for students and nurses.

Iranian journal of nursing and midwifery research, 2011
Anxiety is the one of the most common problems before the surgery. Its prevalence rate ranged from 11 to 80 percent in all the adult patients. Delay in wound healing and increasing use of narcotics and anesthetics are some of the other accompanying problems. Aromatherapy is one of the complementary medicine components. It is applied by special type of oil extracted from aromatic plants for medical objectives. This study aimed to investigate the effects of inhalation aromatherapy on anxiety level in preoperative patients. This was a clinical study done on 72 patients candidate for heart and abdominal surgery admitted in Golestan and Imam Khomeini hospitals. The patients were selected according to our study objectives and inclusion criteria. Then, they were divided in two case and control groups. The Spielberger scale was used for evaluating the anxiety level. Twenty minute of inhalation with handkerchief containing lavandula was used in the case group and placebo also (water) in the ...

Background: The control or reduction of anxiety before surgery is one of the most important components of preoperative care. The question is whether anxiety differs in male and female candidates for surgery. Objectives: The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of aromatherapy with Citrus aurantium on anxiety in men and women candidates for surgery. Methods: This single-blind randomized clinical trial was performed on 60 patients and controlled by placebo. The patients were divided into 30 subjects in the control group and 30 subjects in the aromatherapy group (inhaling C. aurantium essential oil). The patients completed the Spielberger state-trait anxiety inventory before and after the intervention. After collecting information, the questionnaire information was analyzed using SPSS software (version 16). Results: After aromatherapy, 20% of men had mild state and trait anxiety. Moreover, 80% of men had relatively mild state and trait anxiety. In the group of women, 20% of the c...
