OECD-Eurostat 15th Global Forum on Tourism Statistics, 2018
To address the challenge of promoting the competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism industry, the Portuguese Government launched in 2017 the Tourism Strategy 2027, a 10-year strategy with the motto "Leading the tourism of the future". Tourism Strategy 2027 defines the vision for the Portuguese tourism industry for the next 10 years, defines sustainability as its basis and settles ambitious specific goals in both economic, environmental and social pillars. The purpose of this paper is to define a system of tourism destination sustainability indicators, oriented towards the decision-making process of tourism destination managers and other stakeholders in the sector and it is supported by a business intelligence platform, freely available on the Turismo de Portugal's knowledge management website, TravelBI. This system of indicators covers relevant areas of sustainability management in tourism, such as economic benefits, employment, seasonality, accessibility, pressure, satisfaction of tourists and residents, environmental management and water, energy and waste management. The project will support the development of regional sustainable tourism observatories and allow users an interactive experience with data, a systematic assessment of their performance and a benchmark of the industry in this field.
Using Indicators for Sustainable Tourism Development
The aim of this paper is to introduce the possibility of improvements through the development and use of indicators. The tourism industry in Fanø Island, a small community located in South Juntland, Denmark is analyzed. The current outcome of the Tourism Industry in the island is not satisfactory and the need for changes is clear. The paper presents ideas and suggestions of concepts that the island should work with in order to become a more sustainable destination. The suggestions are based on the experience of two case studies highly related with the present object studied. Following, the research question is answered: How can Fanø Island become a more sustainable destination by using indicators.
Can indicators for sustainable tourism improve tourism planning in the coastal destinations?
Tourism, 2020
Due to the continuous increase of the tourism industry, tourism destinations need to be managed under a sustainable framework, with the main aim of minimizing the adverse effects caused by tourism flows. In recent years, several attempts have been made to measure those effects and value the level of sustainability of every destination. A clear example of this is the European Tourism Indicator System (ETIS). In the paper, the results are presented of a project which aimed to test indicators of sustainable tourism in coastal destinations of Catalonia, Istrian Region, and Tuscany Region. The results of 33 collected indicators are available on the online platform of the project INTERREG MED MITOMED+. During the first year, in every category of indicators (economic, social-cultural and environmental) only some indicators were collected, which was expected because different regions apply different methodologies. The collected data is the starting point that shows destinations how the indi...
The ISOST index: A tool for studying sustainable tourism
Journal of Destination Marketing & Management, 2017
This study tackles the primary problems facing sustainable tourism: the absence of any defined limits on sustainability in this sector and the difficulty of measuring sustainability. Based on a system of indicators calculated in municipalities that are representative of the different tourist areas and environments of Catalonia (Spain), the key variables in the study of sustainable local tourism are identified so that they can subsequently be normalised, weighted and aggregated in a single global score: the ISOST index. This index enables the definition of thresholds of sustainable tourism, thereby establishing a destination's level of sustainable tourism. It is a tool that can be applied to the definition of sustainable tourism strategies for the future.
Sustainable Tourism Indicators: Pilot Estimation for the Municipality of Hersonissos, Crete
The topic of the present research is the pilot estimation of sustainable tourism indicators for the Municipality of Hersonissos in Crete. Indicators definition is based on the principles of sustainable development. Data sources, their format and functionality as well as limitations imposed by them regarding indicators estimation, are elements of this research. Moreover, indicators were examined in terms of their functionality, resulting in certain cases, in the definition of surrogate indicators in order to compensate the lack of data and complement their meaning respecting the needs of the application area.
Sustainable performance index for tourism policy development
Tourism Management, 2010
Development of sustainable tourism policies could be a useful way of encouraging new forms of business, increasing employment and promoting the conservation of landscapes; in this regard, the application of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas represents a referential methodology for local development and a possibility to involve local stakeholders in the definition of sustainability policy. In many cases, integrated sustainability indicators are developed within a participatory process; the present study represents an innovative attempt to evaluate sustainability holistically, by defining specific targets through the definition of indicators suitable to measure and evaluate the temporal evolution of development policies, mainstreaming sustainability to reduce adverse effects on the environment and promoting conservation of local and traditional values. Application of sustainability indicators to measure welfare and development at local scales is strategic to evaluate the short and long term effects of strategies developed through the European Charter participatory process.
Sustainability, 2021
Tourism is an important activity to achieve territorial sustainability. In fact, a properly planned long-term tourism activity is critical for the regional planning to reach the desired living conditions capable of attracting new residents in the future. Thereby, the present research aims to assess the perceptions of the managers of tourist companies in the Azores on sustainability actors about the sustainability of tourism activity in the archipelago. Contextually, throughout an exploratory methodology, it was possible to assess the Azores Touristic Companies managers’ perceptions. Hence, this paper shows that the sustainable practices most frequently adopted by the surveyed companies are the following: prioritize the purchase of regional goods and services (94.7%); selective waste separation (94.5%); minimize the use of hazardous substances or replace them with less hazardous products (92.3%); ensure the proper final destination of wastewater (public sanitation, septic tank) (88.8%); and adopt purchasing criteria that take into account environmentally friendly products or services (88.6%). This research also recognizes that 67% of the respondents consider that the respective participating companies have their goals aligned with environmental conservation principles, 66.7% aligned with environmental conservation principles, 36.9% aligned with social conservation principles and 26.4% aligned with cultural conservation principle.
