Social media and the digital immigrants in a Net Gen world
Should you ask a 6 year old what he/she wishes for a birthday present there is only one answer you will get : an ipad to play and connect with friends. That technology has met an upsurge in individuals’ personal development - irrespective of age- is a fact. Both formal and informal learning make growing use of this, while obviously and inherently new skills are shaped to meet the 21st Century working environments. In such a given context, social media has merely become something you can’t live without , even though some still say they can’t live with it either. Used by most as a socializing tool ( as name itself calls it) , social media is keen on stepping into formal educational environments, either as a teacher-teacher tool for material development or as a teacher-student two-edged instrument in a virtual learning environment as a complementary stage for learning. The present paper will look at two cases as such: one where teachers only were involved in a project to develop assessment materials, while the other was an environment where both teachers and students were involved, in a virtual learning environment as a complement to the face-to-face teaching. The highlight is targeted at stressing the idea that social media offers inordinate solutions for a wide array of problems, provided creativity and pragmatism go hand in hand.
Jumping the digital divide: How do "silver surfers" and "digital immigrants" use social media
Networking Knowledge, 2017
For a long time, a digital divide was given between young Web users and older population, which out of anxiety or incapability restrained from using the new technologies. Recently, the so-called "Silver Surfers" and "Digital Immigrants" tend to use the Web not only for sending emails but also increasingly for socializing on social media services (e.g., Kübler 2009; Frees & Koch 2015). This paper aims to discuss the differences in use and adoption of social media platforms between different generations. An online questionnaire was created and distributed among social media users of all ages. The results indicate that the older generations represented a not insignificant part of social media community. They often use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family, some apply Twitter and are fond of new followers and many re-tweets, and others just enjoy new videos on YouTube. There indeed appear to exist inter-generational differences in social media usage. In addition, data analysis leads to the conclusion that there are intra-generational gender-dependent particularities as well.

Digital natives and social media
Digital natives (also known as “Generation Y” and “Millennials”), a generation born during of after introduction of digital technologies, 1980s and after, have mixed preferences for media use in personal and professional lives. A study by Friedl and Tkalac Verˇciˇc (2011) showed that even though digital natives prefer digital media in their personal lives, this is not necessarily reflected in their business lives. This study addressing preferences of “traditional” vs. “the new media” in a university setting found an opposite result.
The Digital Age: Bridging the Communication Gap Between Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants
Sumerianz Journal of Social Science, 2019
The global explosion of the rudiments of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the appeal it enjoys among the young presents a huge challenge to folks of yester years. An erstwhile analog method of acquiring information and sharing same has continued to linger in the heads and hearts of those who belong to the older generation which unsurprisingly irritates the youth of today. This study “The Digital Age: Bridging the Communication Gap between Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants” employed the qualitative method to access the seeming clash between what Marc Prensky designates as “Digital Natives” and “Digital Immigrants” by adopting a proposed Digitus Nativo-Immigrantes ICT Theory as theoretical framework. The researcher discovered the challenge of being media-savvy, language and content barrier and generational difference as clogs in the wheel of progress in terms of finding a nexus between “digital natives” and “digital immigrants.” It proposed being in touch with modern technology, creation of balance regarding language and content as well as attempting to bridge the general gap between the two groups as possible ways out of the seeming quagmire. The paper concluded that with the right methods and disposition, it is possible to bridge the lacuna between “Digital Natives” and “Digital Immigrants” in the classroom and beyond.
