A Semi Experimental Modeling Approach for a Large Two Stroke Marine Diesel Engine Simulation
In this paper, a semi-experimental modeling approach for the simulation of a large marine engine is presented. The engine, which is of the twostroke marine Diesel type, is modeled by means of a cycle mean value model. According to that, two nonlinear first order differential equations, which are derived by applying the angular momentum conservation in engine crankshaft and turbocharger shaft, are used for the calculation of engine crankshaft and turbocharger shaft rotational speeds. The other engine operating parameters are calculated after the solution of a non-linear algebraic system of three equations corresponding to the mass and energy balances in the engine components. Several times in the modeling stage, it is required to use, a model for the pressure drop in the air cooler, a model for the air cooler effectiveness, a model for the mass of injected fuel per cylinder and per cycle, and a model for the pressure increase in the exhaust piping system of the turbocharger. The problem with the already existing models is that they are involving, air cooler characteristics, engine characteristics, and exhaust piping system characteristics which are not always available. So in order to solve this problem, the data recorded in the engine testing data sheet of the engine to be simulated, and relative, to the pressure difference in the air cooler, to the temperatures of the air exiting the com-©CIMAC Congress 2013, Shanghai © CIMAC Congress 2013, Shanghai Paper No. 105 2
Analysis of the Possibilities of Using Modern Process Working Marine Diesel Engine
Journal of KONES. Powertrain and Transport, 2016
Increasing public awareness of environmental protection, it has caused a lot of emphasis on the marine industry to create reciprocating diesel environmentally friendly. Conducting research on real objects in the laboratory gives us the solution to the problem. However, such studies generate large financial resources, especially for marine engines also take a lot of time. Creating a simulation on a computer allows for the limited financial resources and also speeding up work on the piston marine engine. Computer simulations allow the creation of more complex physical models, which can describe the process of operating a marine diesel engine. However, the complication models cause a problem of the future understanding of the model and the possibility of subsequent use of it, for example for control of the engine. The more it established the need to simplify complex models of engines for better understand the processes occurring in the engine. The article is a description of the Mean Value Engine Model (MVEM), which were analysed individual blocks of the model together with the modifications related to the environment in which the engine will run. Modular model allows better modifying it and adding new blocks. This model is based mainly designed for application control. Because of the simple structure easy to adjust for different types of engines. This is particularly good for use in motor drivers. It allows better matching engine operating parameters to reduce emissions of harmful substances into the environment and also achieve better efficiency of marine engine.
Simulation of the dynamics of a marine diesel engine
This paper presents a simulation model of a turbocharged four-stroke diesel engine with eight cylinders in transient conditions, attached to a propulsion system. Having an engine model that is accurate but not complicated is desirable when working with on-board diagnosis or engine control. The model presented here is relatively simple, but sufficiently precise to be able to describe the behaviour of a complete propulsion plant giving as output values the time histories of all variables considered.

New Trends in Production Engineering
The work presents a model of the marine diesel engine working process. The research object was the AL25/30 engine. The model consists of partial models of the combustion process in the engine cylinders, the heat exchange process, flows through air and exhaust channels, heat exchange in the intercooler and friction in mechanical components of the engine. The model includes a description of the processes taking place in the turbocharger also. The input data to the model and the verification data were the results of direct measurements on the research facility. The verification showed errors in the calculation of air and exhaust gas parameters not exceeding 11%. The paper also presents an analysis of the results of fast-changing parameters, including combustion pressure in engine cylinders and pressures in individual gas channels. The designed model allows the analysis of the research facility operation and enables its further development towards the assessment of toxic compounds emiss...
Analyse of marine diesel engine performance
Journal of Polish CIMAC, 2012
Ships safety and economic efficiency depends on the main and auxiliary diesel engines technical condition and technical operation. The probability of failure and a sudden stop of diesel at sea would be minimized if the routine monitoring of parameters is done and found defects removed on time. The purpose of this control is the even distribution of load between the cylinders under the condition of fuel equipment and main diesel systems normal state. The power plant capacity, fuel efficiency and compliance with MARPOL environmental restrictions depend on it. In this report we will discuss the survey methods of the ship’s diesels working process, which improve their efficiency. Use of such methods will enrich the information capability and modeling quality of the PC based Engine Room simulators.

Design and Optimisation of Marine Two-Stroke Diesel Engine Piston
International Journal of Marine Engineering Innovation and Research, 2019
In the cylinder of conventional compression ignition engine, temperature distribution and stress variation set up in the entire piston due to the inherent nature of combustion. This project will investigate the causes and effects of high gas pressure and temperature on marine two-stroke diesel engine piston. The investigation has shown that stress-related piston damages play a dominant role mainly due to mechanical and thermal stress or a combination of both. The simulation parameters that will be considered in this report are piston material, combustion temperature, and combustion pressure. In the present study, conventional marine two-stroke diesel engine piston will be modeled using Autodesk Inventor software. The working condition of the piston will be simulated based on the selected parameters using a finite element analysis method to analyze the magnitude of mechanical stresses acting on the piston. The piston will be redesigned using a material superior to the conventional piston material and will be optimized by reducing the stresses acting on the piston. Two materials will be used in the analysis after which the results will be compared and the best will be proposed. The structure and stress analysis (mechanical, thermal and thermal-mechanical stress) of the design will be modeled using the software mentioned earlier.
Mathematical Model of Marine Diesel Engine Simulator for a New Methodology of Self Propulsion Tests
Abstract. As a vessel operates in the open seas, a marine diesel engine simulator whose engine rotation is controlled to transmit through propeller shaft is a new methodology for the self propulsion tests to track the fuel saving in a real time. Considering the circumstance, this paper presents the real time of marine diesel engine simulator system to track the real performance of a ship through a computer-simulated model. A mathematical model of marine diesel engine and the propeller are used in the simulation to estimate fuel rate, engine rotating speed, thrust and torque of the propeller thus achieve the target vessel’s speed. The input and output are a real time control system of fuel saving rate and propeller rotating speed representing the marine diesel engine characteristics. The self-propulsion tests in calm waters were conducted using a vessel model to validate the marine diesel engine simulator. The simulator then was used to evaluate the fuel saving by employing a new mathematical model of turbochargers for the marine diesel engine simulator. The control system developed will be beneficial for users as to analyse different condition of vessel’s speed to obtain better characteristics and hence optimize the fuel saving rate.

Transactions on Maritime Science, 2017
The paper presents the results of simulation of marine diesel engine fuel injector malfunction and its effects on engine vibration. The work includes the analysis of the engine internal forces and their mathematical models. Simplifications are proposed to allow analyzing the system in one degree of freedom. The results of vibration simulations for the model with efficient fuel system and improperly adjusted injector are also presented. The comparison of simulation results with vibration measurements on the engine was also performed, the diagnostic model was identified and simulation errors were calculated. The complexity of other internal and external interactions is the subject of other studies by the authors. The paper analyzes only the effects of energy dissipation-vibration as a symptom of changes in the technical condition.
