Subsequently, a style that is shown through the modality can reflect the speaker's ideology. This study aimed to find out the ideology reflected by the modality of Melania Trump's and Ivanka Trump's campaign speeches. The speeches were delivered at the Republican National Convention last July 19 th , 2016. There were two objectives discussed in this study. First is to find out the type of modality employed by Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump in their campaign speeches. Second is to reveal the ideologies reflected by the use of the modality. A stylistic approach was employed to discuss the types of modality to figure out the ideologies reflected. The data were taken by employing population study. From the analysis, it was found out that there were four types of modality employed by Melania Trump's speech: inclination, obligation, potentiality and ability, and probability. In Ivanka Trump's speech, there were five types of modality found: inclination, usuality, potentiality and ability, probability, and obligation. There were two ideologies reflected by the use of modality. The ideologies found in both speeches were similar. Those were commitment and self-promotion. The commitments were proved by the existence of inclination, while self-promotion is proven by the existence of potentiality and ability, and usuality types of modality.

The text modality system is a set of views, judgments, and opinions of a tenor on the linguistic phenomena. The tenor's view of discourse lies in a core position called the modal arena and is reconciled with two polar namely positive and negative polar. There are three linguistic phenomena underlying the study of the modalities of the text of the presidential candidate debate, i.e empirical, practical, and theoretical phenomena. The objective of the study was to describe the text modality system of Indonesian presidential candidate debate on the period of 2014-2015. The theory used in this research namely the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) which was initiated by M.A.K Halliday (1985, 1991, 2004, 2014). The research approach is qualitative descriptive approach with the linguistic phenomenological paradigm. The types of data include words, phrases, clauses, a group of phrases, and text units. The data comes from the TDC audio recordings of stage I and II. The research instrument used text validation tables and contexts. Furthermore, the data collection stage used the method of documentation and observation along with some advanced techniques. Stage of data processing was done through classification, segmentation, and data codification. The analysis stage includes several stages, namely reduction, presentation, and verification. The results show that the PS has a tendency to use the probabilistic 'probable' modality, frequency 'usual', must 'mandatory' tendency to 'wish' with the subjectiveimplicit action orientation, while the JW tends to use the modulation of the probability type of 'certain', frequency 'always', must 'required', tendency 'fixed' with an objective-explicit action orientation.
Transitivity and Modality Analytic Processes of Donald Trump's Speech on Death of Baghdadi

Considered an inter-discipline that is associated with the study of the linguistic relationship of power and ideology, critical discourse analysis (CDA) attracts more and more attention to be easily applied to analyze linguistic features through some certain social and cultural background. CDA is built upon Halliday's systemic functional grammar (SFG) that is considered to be a practical method to analyze discourse. As a kind of typical discourse combining the speaker's ideology and intention, political discourse can be analyzed by CDA. Accordingly, this research analyzes Donald Trump's, the ex-American president, speech about Al-Baghdady mainly from the perspectives of transitivity and modality with the aim of revealing the speaker's political intention. The research concludes that Trump uses different linguistic alternations to transmit, change, and retain audiences' ideologies. Further, it attains a positive impact upon the CDA's development.
Modality in Political Discourse: Modalised Utterances in the Obama-Romney Election Debate
2015
This paper explores modal expressions and modalised utterances in the narratives of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney in the debate on foreign policy held during the 2012 election campaign. The theoretical framework of the analysis is based on Palmer’s (1979; 2001) description and classification of modality as well as on Frawley’s (1992) view of modality as epistemic deixis. The initial aim is to analysethe frequency of occurrence, distribution and meaning of the modal expressions in both candidates’ narratives viewing modalised utterances as political statements and to offer a tentative suggestion of how modality seen as epistemic version of deixis can be a tool in interpreting political statements in election debates.

NOBEL: Journal of Literature and Language Teaching, 2018
This research is the collaborative study of Critical Discourse Analysis with the new grammar perspective of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory focusing on Transitivity System. It investigates the pattern of transitivity process that reveals the linguistic strategies as well as its ideological construction of Donald Trump’s speeches in the 45th United States presidential election. The writer mainly utilizes Fairclough’s framework for CDA which consists of three stages of analysis consisting of description, interpretation, and explanation. LiNGUA: Jurnal Ilmu Bahasa dan Sastra
This paper discusses the relationship between the language and power in the presidential speech text, which is projected through linguistic features, especially modalities.
