Ritodrine-induced agranulocytosis in pregnancy (original) (raw)
Journal of obstetrics and gynaecology : the journal of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 2014
Abstract
Introduction Ritodrine is a beta-2 adrenergic receptor with tocolytic eff ects. Widely used since the 1970s to stop premature labour, it is no longer approved for use in certain countries, including the USA, because of severe side-eff ects. Nevertheless, it is still used in many regions, including China and the European Union. Here we report the case of a pregnant woman who experienced agranulocytosis during continuous ritodrine therapy to prevent premature labour. We also describe the results of a literature review in which we found relatively few cases. Th erefore, our case may help extend the limited literature on this problem.
