Garrett’s Ranking Technique provides the change of orders of problems into numerical scores. The advantage of this technique is that the problems are arranged based on their severity from the point of view of respondents. Results: The study highlighted that the m...
ISSUES AND CHALLENGES FACED BY CASHEW PROCESSING ENTERPRISES -A STUDY IN UDUPI DISTRICT
Journal of Emerging Technologies and Innovative Research, 2019
Cashew nut processing is mainly an export oriented seasonal industry. The industry came into fame only during fifties and the number of cashew nut factories has since then been on the increase. Cashew processing is a labor demanding industry. It employs 95% women from socially and economically backward areas in rural India. It is a fact that any amount received by a woman member of staff will be utilized directly for the benefit of the family unit and hence the link relating to family wellbeing is quite apparent. Cashew industry is one of the most promising industries in the area of women employment and empowerment, sustainable rural development and economic development of the country. It has a greater impact on the rural economy of Udupi district. But there are various problems that are faced by the industry today which need instantaneous attention of the government and other institutions so that the development in general does not get affected. Shortage of trained manpower, less wages and welfare programmes for labourers, moderate mechanization, shortage of quality and quantity of raw materials, lack of policy push by the government are some of the problems faced by cashew industry. Researchers here took effort to spot the various problems faced by the industry in Udupi District, which is one of the major Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of the coastal Karnataka. The Study concluded that there is an imperative policy requirement to affect the cashew industry as a whole so as to come out and face the issues and challenges.

A STUDY ON THE MARKETING OF CASHEW INDUSTRY IN INDIA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO TAMILNADU
iaeme, 2013
Marketing in respect of cashew involved several players and channels. Marketing begins from the sale of raw cashew nuts by farmers and reaches the level of exporters/ retailers for selling of processed and graded kernels to the ultimate consumers. The sample cashew growers sold a major portion of the produce to local traders, who in turn supplied the nuts to large traders and processing units located in Kollam (Kerala), Cuddalore (Tamil Nadu), Mangalore (Karnataka), etc. There are several entities in the marketing channels that get good share in the total spread between the producer and consumer. This Section analyses in detail the marketing aspects of raw nuts and kernels in the study area.

An analysis of performance of agro based industries in Kerala with special reference to cashew nut
Indian Journal of Economics and Development, 2015
The cashew processing industry plays a significant role in Kerala’s economy in terms of foreign exchange earnings and as an employment. The production and export of cashew nut industries in Kerala exhibits a decreasing trend after 2004. The shifting of cropping pattern to more profitable crops like rubber is the main reason for reduction in cashew production.
Adoption, Processing and Marketing Behaviour of Cashewnut Growers, Processors and Traders
Cashew / Cashewnut has gained status of commercial crop from that of a forest component through technological advancements with respect to propagation, production and management. This has been possible as a result of increasing demand for raw cashew nuts and enhanced interest for its commercialization. It is the most widely grown cash crop throughout the world. In India, cultivation of cashew is confined to Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal. The country has a comparative advantage in the production and processing of cashewnuts on account of its cheap and skilled labour force. Marketing of raw cashewnuts in India has not yet been organized in a systematic manner except in Goa where cooperative marketing societies have a major stake in raw nuts trade. Keeping these points in mind, a study has been taken up to analyse the production, processing and marketing behaviour of the cashewnut growers, processors and traders, respectively.

Cashew has the potential to deliver the sources of income for farmers, empower rural women in the processing sector, make employment opportunities and build foreign exchange through exports. This study was conducted to find out the factors affecting cashew production and to identify the major constraints present in cashew cultivation met by farmers in the Maritimepattu Divisional Secretariat Division in Mullaitivu District of Sri Lanka. It was examined the social characteristics, economic factors, and farming knowledge of cashew cultivation among farmers in the study area. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to 60 respondents selected through a simple random sampling method. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regressions were used for the data analysis. Results revealed that age and education level significantly (P<0.05) and negatively affected on production while, farming knowledge and participation of training significantly (P<0.05) and positively affect the cashew production and it was found that the mean income from cashew production per acre was LKR 121,848.00 per annum and the average yield of the sample of respondents was 312 kg/ha. Cashew cultivators were constrained by several limitations such as inadequate machineries, severe pest and disease attack, lack of marketing facilities, no reasonable price for fresh cashew apple, poor cashew processing technology and poor storage facilities. Farmers should be trained and educated well in terms of good agronomic practices, and processing technologies to increase the quality and productivity.
Export of cashew kernel from india: its direction and prediction
Cashew is one of the most important dollar earning crops of the country. The quantity of export of cashew kernel had registered a growth of 5.71% per annum. This was made possible both due to increased export to countries of import and changes in composition of India's cashew kernel exports to various destinations. The paper quantifies the changing structure of cashew kernel exports in order to understand the dynamics of changes and the growth rate analysis. The growth rate analysis reveals that, UAE shows the highest growth rate and the countries like USA, Netherland, UK show the negative growth rates. The markov chain model was used to assess the transition probabilities for the major cashew kernel export from India. The result revealed that, the country USA was the highest probability of reduction (0.87) compare to all other countries. The forecasted values for, the countries UAE and 'other countries' show the increasing trend and the countries like USA, UK, Netherland, Japan and France show the decreasing trend.
Assessing Key Constraints in Cashew Production: Insights from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, India
Advances in Research, 2024
India ranks among the world's top cashew producers, with Kerala and Tamil Nadu serving as key contributors to the country's cashew production. Among the Plantation sector, specifically cashew cultivation plays a pivotal role in boosting farm economy in India. This particular study explores field constraints experienced by cashew growers in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which significantly impacts cashew cultivation. The key objective is to compare field challenges experienced by cashew growers among major producers in southern regions of India. The methodology involves a purposive multi-stage sampling approach to select regions, with an equal proportion of 80 respondents from each state selected through simple random sampling. Totally, 160 cashew growers were investigated for data collection through pre-tested structured interview schedule. The data sets were analysed using SPSS software, with frequency and percentage analysis employed to rank the identified constraints. The significant findings were pest and disease infestations, labour scarcity, unstable market price, lack of technical know-how and inadequate processing facilities. Notably, 100 per cent of growers reported that, Cashew Stem and Root Borer (CSRB) infestation as a most critical issue in both states. This paper highlights, region-specific and timely technical interventions, commodity-specific assured markets, proper pricing system and infrastructure development. The study's interpretation highlights the need to address high-priority and specialized constraints through targeted policy reforms and technical support systems, aiming to enhance the productivity and sustainability of cashew farming in India. These findings also provide valuable insights that can be applied to other cashew-producing regions and contribute to shaping national agricultural policies.
