The Apocalyptic Attack of Jerusalem by Non-Israelite Nations In Zechariah 9–14 and the Death of Jesus in Mark 13 (original) (raw)
2023, Jesus: Beginning, Middle, and End of Time? Eschatology in Gospels & Acts Research, edited by P. G. Bolt (Norwest: SCD Press), 211-233
This essay comprises two parts. The first is a review of 'Mark 13 and the Return of the Shepherd: The Narrative Logic of Zechariah in Mark,' by Paul T. Sloan, in which he argues that Mark 13 follows the eschatological ‘framework’ of Zech. 13:7–14:5 to speak of Jesus’ death, the destruction of the temple in A.D. 70, and Jesus’ Parousia. The second part argues, contrary to Sloan, that Mark’s Gospel is not utilising Zechariah to provide a sequence for these events. Rather, Mark’s Gospel utilises the apocalyptic language describing the attack of Jerusalem by non-Israelite nations in Zechariah 9–14 symbolically, to speak of Jesus’ death alone. Other lines of support for this idea outside of Mark 13 and outside of Mark’s Gospel are given.
