EDM brings together researchers from computer science, education, psychology, psychometrics, and statistics to analyze large data sets to answer educational research questions. The increase in instrumented educational software and databases of student test scores, has created large repositories of data reflecting how students learn. The EDM conference focuses on computational approaches for using those data to address important educational questions. The broad collection of research disciplines ensures cross fertilization of ideas, with the central questions of educational research serving as a unifying focus. We received a total of 54 submissions from 24 countries. Submissions were reviewed by three reviewers and 20 of them were accepted as full papers (37.03% acceptance rate). 13 other submissions were accepted as poster or as student papers. All papers will appear both on the web, at www.educationaldatamining.org, as well as in the printed proceedings. The conference also included invited talks by Professor Arthur C.
Reproducing predictive learning analytics in CS1

Predictive learning analytics has been widely explored in educational research to improve student retention and academic success in an introductory programming course in computer science (CS1). General-purpose and interpretable dropout predictions still pose a challenge. Our study aims to reproduce and extend the data analysis of a privacy-first student pass-fail prediction approach proposed by Van Petegem and colleagues (2022) in a different CS1 course. Using student submission and self-report data, we investigated the reproducibility of the original approach, the effect of adding self-reports to the model, and the interpretability of the model features. The results showed that the original approach for student dropout prediction could be successfully reproduced in a different course context and that adding self-report data to the prediction model improved accuracy for the first four weeks. We also identified relevant features associated with dropout in the CS1 course, such as timely submission of tasks and iterative problem solving. When analyzing student behaviour, submission data and self-report data were found to complement each other. The results highlight the importance of transparency and generalizability in learning analytics and the need for future research to identify other factors beyond self-reported aptitude measures and student behaviour that can enhance dropout prediction. Notes for Practice • Dropout prediction in computer science education aids in detecting struggling students for early support. • This study verified a privacy-friendly dropout prediction approach's robustness by replicating it in another educational context. • Combining student behaviour and self-reported data early in a course enhances dropout prediction accuracy, enabling timely support. • Researchers should find a balance between model accuracy and transparency to promote fair predictive learning analytics. • Educators should not exclusively depend on classification-based prediction; they should explore alternative structures and pedagogies to facilitate learning.

Due to its unique ability to create relationships and obtain accurate results, artificial intelligence and machine learning are tools used in this field to achieve the expected goals. However, the diversity of studies and the differences in their content create confusion and reduce their ability to pioneer future studies. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led many colleges and students to use online learning. In educational databases with so much data, evaluating student development is difficult. E-learning is essential for egalitarian education since it uses technology and contemporary learning techniques. This review research found three ways for predicting online course performance: i) To choose the best features to raise student performance; ii) The most effective algorithms for transforming unbalanced data into balanced data; and iii) The best machine learning algorithms to predict online course performance. This study also offered insights into using hybrid techniques and optimization algorithms to educational data sets to improve student performance prediction. The utilization of data from independent e-learning products to enhance education today requires data processing to ensure quality. In addition to these techniques, our abstract highlights the effectiveness of hybrid feature selection methods like L2 regularization (Ridge) and recursive feature elimination (RFE) and ensemble learning models like random forest, gradient boosting, and AdaBoost. These approaches considerably improve prediction accuracy and tackle huge and sophisticated educational dataset challenges. Our work uses advanced machine-learning approaches to optimize e-learning settings and boost academic achievements in the shifting online education landscape caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prediction of student academic performance has drawn considerable attention in education. However, although the learning outcomes are believed to improve learning and teaching, prognosticating the attainment of student outcomes remains underexplored. A decade of research work conducted between 2010 and November 2020 was surveyed to present a fundamental understanding of the intelligent techniques used for the prediction of student performance, where academic success is strictly measured using student learning outcomes. The electronic bibliographic databases searched include ACM, IEEE Xplore, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer, and Web of Science. This systematic literature review aims to identify the recent research trend, most studied factors, and methods used to predict student academic performance from 2015 to 2021. The PRISMA framework guides the study. The study reviews 58 out of 219 research articles from Lens and Scopus databases. The findings indicate that the research focus of current studies revolves around identifying factors influencing student performance, data mining (DM) algorithms performance, and DM related to e-Learning systems. It also reveals that student academic records and demographics are primary aspects that affect student performance. The most used DM approach is classification and the Decision Tree classifier is the most employed DM algorithm.
