Mine tailings release several genotoxic compounds into the environment. Neighboring river basins are the most affected, so it is important to determine the quality of its waters. Micronucleus test (MN) quantifies the genotoxic damage produced in erythrocytes of Cebra fish (Danio rerio) due to genotoxic compounds present in contaminated rivers. It is because of this that the research analyzed five points in the Ramis River Basin (Department of Puno, Peru) using zebrafish as a biomarker and the MN test; the fish were exposed during 24, 48 and 72 hours to 3 different volumes (1x, 1/2x and 1/4x) for each point sampled. Among the most striking results, after 24 hours of exposure, the sample taken from the Laguna Lunar de Oro (M5) revealed fatal results for the fish (100%) at 1X, while the sample taken from La Pampilla (M4) presented a 23% of MN at 1/2X, and the sample taken at the Taraco river (M1) showed a 12% of MN. The analysis at 48 and 72 h of exposure showed the presence of a maximum of 5% of MN for all samples. We can, therefore, conclude that the MN test serves as an efficient genotoxicity indicator to determining the quality of river water contaminated by mine tailings.
