Barriers to conversion to organic farming: A case study in Babol County in Iran
Organic farming offers a more sustainable alternative to conventional agricultural production and its adoption is not an easy option for farmers, since it carries several barriers with it. The main purpose of this study was to identify these barriers in Babol County in Iran. A sample size of 150 farmers was selected for this research by using simple random sampling method. The result of factor analysis showed that major barriers or obstacles to the adoption of organic farming between farmers were: productive, natural, attitude and knowledge, infrastructural, institutional and economical barriers. These factors explained about 68% of the total variance of the research variables.
Exploring the motivations and problems of farmers for conversion to organic farming in Iran
Identifying and understanding the heterogeneity of the motivations and problems of farmers is critical for designing better strategies as societies strive to convert towards agricultural approaches such as organic farming and sustainable intensification. The objective of this research is to explore the motivations and problems for conversion to organic farming in Iran. Survey data of Iranian organic producers were collected during the first half of 2015. These data were used to find the statistical determinants of motivations and problems for organic production. Results suggest that economic motivations, health, safety concerns and environmental issues are the predominant motives for conversion, while social and ethical motives are of lesser importance. Problems experienced during conversion relate to marketing, agronomic issues, lack of governmental and institutional support, negative pressure from other farmers and farm groups, and lack of physical and financial capital. To prosper, the Iranian organic sector must overcome fundamental economic problems and challenges. Some of the strategies recommended include the development and scaling up of sustainable intensification, strategies that encourage farmers’ markets and community-supported agriculture (CSA) initiatives, and sustainable procurement. Organic farming in Iran has great potential for contribution in sustainable agriculture. In order to support the implementation of organic farming, policy makers need to have better understanding of farmers. The purpose of this study is to analyse the socio-economic characteristics of organic versus conventional farmers. In addition, we aim to investigate farmer’s perception and attitude towards organic farming. The sample included 141 pioneer farmers (organic and non-organic farmers) in five provinces in Iran (Kerman, Golestan, Khorasan Razavi, Kermanshah and Fars). These regions have the highest number of organic farmers in the country. For conducting the analysis, we used Mann-Whitney Test, Chi-Square Test and Discriminant Analysis. The results of Mann-Whitney Test show that perceptions of farmers about environmental risks and human health effects of chemical fertilizers and pesticides were significantly different among organic and conventional farmers. In addition, our results i...
The purpose of this research was to examine factors affecting the conversation to organic farming by rice producers in Mazandaran Province, north of Iran. This study used qualitative research methods. The research method was multiple-case study and purposive sampling method was used. The main instrument for data collection was an open-ended questionnaire (protocol). The sample size was 10 organic rice producers in Mazandaran province that received certification of healthy product from Standard Organization of Mazandaran Province. The data gathered until empirical saturation was reached. The results showed that factors affecting the conversation to organic farming consist of: Facilitating factors and barriers to conversion to organic farming. Facilitating factors include motivations and profits. Health and safety, environmental, Ideological and philosophical and economic motivations are the most important motivating factors mentioned by rice producers. Barriers to conversion to organic farming include challenges and costs. Lack of knowledge, lack of government supports, fear of the future and production are mentioned as the most important challenges of the conversion to organic farming.

The economy of Iran is dependent on many variables that play a role in its growth and development. On the other hand, rainfall is one of the important factors of climate change that has affected economic strategic programs including those of the agricultural sector. Rainfall variations impact many economic variables, some of which are explored here. The aim of this study was to evaluate rainfall shocks on some economic variables using a general equilibrium model that included the best scenario representing the highest rainfall, the worst scenario representing the lowest rainfall, and normal scenario considering average rainfall. To check the effect of these changes on the agricultural sector, a set of commodities produced by this section is considered separately, and other sections are considered in general. The results showed that the production of these commodities has been increased by about 14% in the best rainfall scenario. All commodities have been faced with reduced consumpti...
Organic Agriculture: Food for Future Green Consumers in Iran
International Journal of Agricultural Management and Development, 2017
The aim of this paper was investigating the effects of organic knowledge, perceived consequences, subjective norms, price, and green trust, perceived consumer effectiveness, avail- ability, relative advantage, and organic purchase intention on organic purchase behavior among Iranian consumers as the consumers in a developing country. The survey questionnaire was administered to the customers of large chain stores and organic food stores in five provinces of Iran that had branches for producing and selling organic food products. Given the very few number of organic food consumers in Iran, only 192 out of 240 questionnaires were filled and then used as samples of study. In order to analysis the data and test the hypotheses, multiple regression analysis method was used using by SPSS software. Results showed strong support (R 2 =0.51) for the impact of price, consumer effectiveness, and perceived consequences on intention to purchase organic food products. Organic knowledge, green trust,...
Traditional agriculture in Iran and development challenges for organic agriculture
International Journal of Biodiversity Science, Ecosystems Services & Management, 2005
Iran occupies a vast area of land with diverse climatic conditions, encompassing a variety of production practices and rich biological diversity. Traditional agriculture was widespread less than 50 years ago and is still appreciated by some farmers (called 'ignored organic farmers') in Iran. However, such practices have been ignored in the context of current concenpts of organic agriculture. It may be impossible or not economically viable to return Iran to traditional production systems, but the long history of environmentally safe production systems could provide an incentive to increase development of organic agriculture and sustainable production systems in Iran. It will not be a question of whether the organic movement continues to grow in Iran (as it has in other countries), but meeting the challenges required to keep pace with this growth without fundamentally challenging or threatening the overall principles of organic agriculture.
