Progress and prospects for research of Wine Tourism in Portugal

PASOS. Revista de Turismo y Patrimonio Cultural, 2020

Wine producers in Portugal have begun to see tourism as an opportunity to diversify their profit margins. With the growing importance of enology, universities have established greater research into the subject and to organize the existing bibliography. Thus, this paper presents a panorama of the articles on wine tourism from 2003 to 2018 with a critical analysis of characteristics and trends in the Portuguese context. The literature review covers all the completed publications in English, Portuguese, and Spanish in journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, Scielo, and Spell. A total of 36 articles were examined after eliminating duplicates, dissertations, and theses. The main conclusions are that wineries tend to be organized by routes with scant literature relating to other routes and wine regions outside Portugal.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OF SUPPORTING THE WINE TOURISM

Abstract Tourism is a very important sector in the world economy. The growth of wine tourism has become an essential preoccupation for both those involved in tourism and those in the wine industry. The growth of tourist activity determines the development of some branches of the national economy, such as: industry, agriculture, construction, transport and trade. The paper presents the mechanisms for supporting wine tourism in different countries of the world. The paper also analyzes government programs and specific mechanisms for supporting and developing the wine sector in general and wine tourism in particular. For the research were utilised the methods: monographic, analysis and synthesis, comparison, etc. The results demonstrate the efficiency of measures and mechanisms to support wine tourism in different countries of the world. Key words: wine tourism, enotourism, wine sector

Wine routes in Spain: A case study

2010

Spain is a country with an enormous wine-growing tradition and with a huge tourist industry, although it has not made the importance of wine tourism profi table. Th us, it was not until 2000 that diff erent offi cial wine routes seemed to appear, with the main objective, amongst others, being to help develop rural areas where wine production is of crucial importance and to off er alternatives to traditional sun and beach tourism. In this paper, we will present an analysis of wine tourism in Spain based on the premise that wine (and regional cuisine) may be, and very frequently is, the main reason for visiting a certain area. To investigate this, we will present the results of an empirical study carried out in one of the offi cial wine routes of Andalusia, a Spanish region where sun and beach tourism and cultural tourism represent a highly signifi cant part of tourist activity. We have analysed how this tourist route is bringing about signifi cant socioeconomic changes to the geographical area. To achieve this aim, we have conducted a survey of the companies involved in the wine route in order to ascertain their opinions on the impact and infl uence of the route. Th e main results of the study demonstrate the need to consolidate the development of such routes through collaboration between public institutions, ensuring the participation of all the diff erent social actors involved.

Wine tourism in an agritourism context: Insight into agritourism providers’ perceptions

Revista Turismo & Desenvolvimento, 2018

Rural regions abounding in vineyards provide a perfect setting for blending wine and agricultural tourism. Both types of tourism offer a varied combination of heterogeneous agricultural products and experiences, which add value to rural regions. In this article, wine tourism is described as part of a wider agritourism phenomenon. We start with a brief summary of an extensive literature review of the concepts of 'wine tourism' and 'agritourism'. Some of the key themes resulting from this reading exercise were then confronted with the reality in the Vila Real district. Six in-depth interviews were conducted with the managers of accommodation units, which are officially categorised as agritourism units. Thus, a first set of data was collected which will allow a better understanding of the place of wine and agritourism in that area, which partially integrates the Demarcated Douro Wine Region. In other words, the supply side was analysed by comparing what happens in the Vila Real district with global widespread practices concerning the following topics: What are the main motivations of the managers, how do they perceive agritourism's benefits, what are their attitudes towards heritage preservation and how do they profile the agritourism visitors? The research results will increase insight into the agritourism reality and allow us to formulate valuable guidelines for the future development of the sector.

The Wine Effects in Tourism Studies: Mapping the Research Referents

Sustainability, 2022

This research provides an empirical overview of articles and authors referring to research on wine tourism, analyzed from 2000 to 2021, and what they contribute to deepening the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8. The articles were examined through a bibliometric approach based on data from 199 records stored in the Web of Science (JCR), applying traditional bibliometric laws, and using VOSviewer for data processing and metadata. The results highlight an exponential increase in scientific production without interruptions between 2005 and 2020, with a concentration in only 35 highly cited authors, where the hegemony is held by Australia, among the co-authorship networks of worldwide relevance. The main topics observed in the literature are local development through wine tourism, sustainability and nature conservation, and strategies for sustainable development. Finally, there are six articles with great worldwide influence in wine tourism studies that maintain in their entirety t...

New World and Mediterranean wine tourism: a comparative analysis

2009

Th is is a theoretical paper providing a comparative overview of wine tourism in the New World and Europe – particularly the Mediterranean region. Th e review is timely because while there has been substantial wine tourism research in Anglophone countries, less has occurred in Europe, despite the fact that it has such a long history of wine production. Th e paper suggests a series of diff erences between the two areas based on both structural factors aff ecting the context in which wine is produced. Th ese contextual factors relate both to wine supply and to demand, and include production factors, appellation systems, attitudes to business, producer commitment, consumption patterns, the search for experience, and the stimulus to wine tourism. Th e paper also considers aspects of the practice of wine tourism, including events, education and the cellar door experience, before off ering some underlying themes and areas for future research.

An approach to winemaking in Colombia from the perspective of tourism and culture

PERSPECTIVES ON RURAL DEVELOPMENT No. 6. Bio-cultural Heritage and Communities of Practice. Participatory Processes in Territorial Development as a multidisciplinary Fieldwork, 2022

This paper aims to propose that, in the case of Colombia, wine producers defined the spatial location of production in relation to the opportunities to market their products in situ, diversifying their activity towards services related to leisure and tourism; some with better opportunities than others, in relation to the distance between their vineyards and the places of origin of a certain type of tourists, or of attractions and the development of tourist practices.

Wine Destination Offered as a Brand – Enotourism in Chile

Fifth International Scientific Conference ITEMA Recent Advances in Information Technology, Tourism, Economics, Management and Agriculture

Chile is seen as a wine-producing giant from New World Wine, and so its brand as a destination is nowadays mostly associated with nature and then with wine. As a country of wine for incoming tourists, it can offer even more connection to wine due to the superior qualities of its history, culture, and nature. Enotourism is a trend that could explicitly produce the next wine tourism destination, among other things. This paper aims to determine the state of the art on the supply side (wineries) for wine tourism and to find out the extent to which winemakers offer wine services in their winery in a particular wine destination. The field research was conducted in one of Chile´s wine-producing regions: Maule Valley. Semi-structured interviews, followed by the processing of the obtained data, constitute the main source base. This paper also proposes possible recommendations for the wine destination brand of Maule Valley.
