FACTORS AFFECTING ATTITUDE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TOWARDS LEARNING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: EVIDENCE FROM SELECTED ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOLS IN KOLKATA, WEST BENGAL

Attitude towards language is a construct that explains linguistic behaviour in particular. Attitude is one of the key elements for learning a language (Starks, D. & Paltridge B. 1996), (Karahan, 2007). Attitude is a variable thing and it can be viewed from various dimensions and its relation with language learning can be measured in numerous ways as well. Attitude can also be changed governing to many external as well internal personality factors of a person. Wenden gives a new dimension to attitude concept by dividing into three elements, namely: cognitive, evaluative and behavioral which all works together (Wenden 1991) while learning a language. Later on, Ladegaard points out mainly three factors of an attitude that affects language learning the most. They are ‘knowledge’, ‘emotion’, and ‘behaviour’ (Ladegaard 2000). Each factor has different recognizable parameters and experiment to elicit attitude changes and results of English language learning. A Comparative Study on Attitude towards English Language Learning among Students of Higher Secondary Level of Hyderabad

The present study is a sincere attempt made by the researcher to study the attitude of students towards English language learning at higher secondary level of HYDERABAD. Since from the review of related literature it was found that no studies had been conducted so far to compare the attitude towards English language learning between male and female students at higher secondary level of HYDERABAD. No studies were found to compare the attitude towards English language learning between rural and urban students at higher secondary level of HYDERABAD; the researcher had chosen the present problem to fill the gap in this regard. The study was conducted on 200 sample students of HYDERABAD. It was found that firstly, there is no difference between male and female students regarding their attitude towards English language learning at the higher secondary level of HYDERABAD. Secondly, there is a significant difference between urban and rural students regarding their attitude towards English language learning at the higher secondary level of HYDERABAD.

Attitude and its Aspects towards English Language Learning among the Students of Public and Private Schools of Gujranwala

This comparative study investigates the learners' attitudes towards learning English from two comparative education systems (private and public sector) of Pakistan. This study is an attempt to measure the cognitive, emotional and behavioral attitudes of these young learners towards English. The research methodology is quantitative in nature. The tool used for data analysis by the researchers is questionnaire. Steal's (2004) questionnaire has been used to measure the attitude of the learners towards English language. The data has been collected from 100 students of four different schools including two private and two public schools in Gujranwala district. The quantitative analysis of the data is executed by SPSS and the findings reveal that the students of private schools show positive attitude towards English language as compared to the public schools' students. The researchers also suggest a large-scale study from various parts of the country with larger population to know the reason behind the positive or negative attitude of students.

An Analysis of Students’ Attitude in Learning English at Eleventh Grade of Sma Negeri 2 Gu

The problem in this study was how were the students’ attitude in learning English at eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 2 Gu? This study aimed at determining and identifying students’ attitude in learning English in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 2 Gu. The design of this study was a descriptive qualitative. Subjects of the research were fifteen students of eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 2 Gu. Techniquies of data collection in this study were questionnaire and interviw. Techniques of data analysis used were data reduction, data display and conclusion. The result showed thwt te students had positive attitude in learning English, which consisted of aspect of cognitive attitude, aspect of affective attitude and aspect of behavior attitude. In all aspects students’ attitude were in the good category. Based on three aspects of attitudes, the most dominant aspect of attitude was the affective attitude aspect.

Bachelor First Year Education Student’s Attitude towards Learning English

This article examines the bachelor first year education students' attitude towards learning English. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted to carry out the research study. Five-point Likert scale statement items regarding the attitude towards learning English were administered to the mass of students at three campuses in the academic year 2018-2019 in Makawanpur District of Nepal. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 270 students as respondents out of the population of 277 students for the study by maintaining the confidence level (95%) and the margin of error (1%). The collected data were statistically analyzed by using SPSS. The study revealed that the students had a positive attitude (Median=4) towards learning English, and they "Agreed" with the statement items. The Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis H test show that all the students from the three campuses had a positive attitude "Agree" towards learning English regardless of their sex (Sig.=.841), religion (Sig..470), and age group (Sig..753). This article is important for the teachers, the concerned authorities and the parents, because it provides them with information why the students were interested in learning English.

Attitude of Grade 12 SHS Academic Tracks Students Towards Speaking in English

The matter of learner's attitude is acknowledged as one of the most important factors that impact on learning language. Hence, this study aimed to determine the attitude of students toward speaking in English as it employed descriptivecorrelational method to describe their profile and their attitude. It also ascertained the relationship between the students' attitude towards speaking in English and their profile variables and the difference of their attitude when grouped by strand and by sex. The data were collected from Grade 12 Senior High School Academic Track students with the use of the English Speaking Attitude Questionnaire (ESAQ). Results show that both HumSS and ABM strand students have positive attitude towards speaking in English and that speaking in English is important to them in general. Interestingly, however, these students admitted that they do not speak English well, are worried about making mistakes when they speak English and are afraid of being laughed at when they make mistakes in speaking. The students also believe that they need to learn speaking in English because they might need it in their future job and that practicing it will make them better speakers of English. The study found no significant difference in the attitude of the students towards speaking in English when grouped according to strand and sex. The implication of these results redounds to the emphasis on the importance of classroom motivation to improve students' attitude towards speaking in English.

ATTITUDE TOWARDS ENGLISH AS A LANGUAGE AND MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION: A STUDY IN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN COOCH BEHAR DISTRICT OF WEST BENGAL

English has differently been used both as a language and as a medium of instruction in the country like India where English is not first language for the majority. But acceptance of English from both these perspectives i.e. as a language and as a medium of instruction by students and teachers is growing interest among the researchers. However, Attitude of secondary school students of Cooch Behar district of West Bengal towards English is primal focus of this current study. 320 students from different secondary schools of the said district have been selected by simple random sampling technique to carry forward the research work. And this work highlights few interesting points related to students' attitude in this regard. This study may broaden the horizon towards understanding of English language in a different way and quantitative analysis of data could help in finding the actual state of students' attitude towards English as a language and also as a medium of instruction particularly in secondary schools of West Bengal.

An Exploration of English Students’ Attitude toward Learning English

Attitude is one of the success factors in language learning. It includes students’ feelings, beliefs, and behavior tendencies. This study is conducted using the mixed-method research exploring English Department students’ attitude on learning English. The main focus of the study is to discover students’ belief on English, to understand students’ attitude, feeling and behavior on learning English. The data were collected through questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The participants of the reseach were fifty five students selected randomly to fill in the questionnaire. However, only six students were selected purposively to gain data more in-depth through interview. Correlate of Students' Attitudes towards English with their Academic Performance in their English subject

ABSTRACT The attitudes towards English of the second year-A ESEP (Engineering Science Education Program) students of Calbayog City National High School for the school year 2014-2015 were identified, categorized and correlated with their academic performance in their English subject. Moreover, profile of the respondents in terms of age and sex was also determined and moderated to their attitudes towards English and their academic performances in their English subject. The descriptive-correlational method of research was used with forty (40) student respondents who were chosen through universal sampling procedure. A researcher-made questionnaire with an adopted attitude towards English checklist was administered to identify the profile/personal variables of the respondents. The results were statistically treated, analyzed and interpreted using frequency, percentage distribution and single regression analysis. The findings showed that there is no significant relationship that exists between the students’ attitude towards English and their academic performance. Result dictates that the academic performance among the respondents is not affected by all means with their individual attitudes toward English as a subject area. Moreover, results revealed that age and gender do not moderate nor affect the relationship of students' attitudes towards English with their academic performance in English subject. It is highly recommended then that students must find within them the inner drive to love English as a language for it is their personal disposition which would lead them to achieve higher academic performance and further studies to establish the relationship of students' attitudes towards English must be conducted to come up with much more favorable results. ATTITUDES OF STUDENTS TOWARDS THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN HIGH SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT The paper examined the attitudes of high school students towards the English language, the differences in the attitudes regarding their gender, educational status of their parents, monthly revenue of the students’ family, and the accommodation unit of the primary education school from which they graduated. A Likert-type scale was used to collect data. The instrument was validated and there liability coefficient was found to be 0.94. Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and the Tukey HSD test were used in the analysis of data. Purposive random sampling was used to select 250 students from 7 high schools. The findings revealed that foreign language intensive high schools are better at the English language than other high schools.There is a meaningful difference between the attitude of working group to English language and gender, educational status of parents, and monthly revenue of students’ family, however, there is no meaningful difference in the accommodation unit from which they graduated.
