This paper presents a mobile application based on providing Location Based Services (LBS) using Global Positioning System (GPS) as a location provider. The main objective of this work is to design and implement a client server system that helps users to locate their family members and receive alerts when friends are nearby. The mobile application was implemented using J2ME where the most recent APIs and other older APIs were combined together in order to make the application reliable on all types of mobiles. The server was implemented using PHP since PHP guarantees that the server would not be overloaded. The type of the Database used in the system was MySQL. The average location accuracy of the application is about couple of meters.
Location Based Services using Android Mobile Operating System
The motivation for every location based information system is: "To assist with the exact information, at right place in real time with personalized setup and location sensitiveness". In this era we are dealing with palmtops and iPhones, which are going to replace the bulky desktops even for computational purposes. We have vast number of applications and usage where a person sitting in a roadside café needs to get relevant data and information. Such needs can only be catered with the help of LBS. These applications include security related jobs, general survey regarding traffic patterns, decision based on vehicular information for validity of registration and license numbers etc. A very appealing application includes surveillance where instant information is needed to decide if the people being monitored are any real threat or an erroneous target. We have been able to create a number of different applications where we provide the user with information regarding a place he or she wants to visit. But these applications are limited to desktops only. We need to import them on mobile devices. We must ensure that a person when visiting places need not carry the travel guides with him. All the information must be available in his mobile device and also in user customized format.

This system includes a mobile client, a repository, a web client and a map service. The mobile client is used to find location and send a Popup SMS to user when his/her friends or family members come around the user’s area of direction. This location information can be sent to the server and the same information can be managed and viewed using the web client by other users. Wide usage of mobile internet technology and Smart Phones, more attentions is on network access and interactive application through mobile phones. Android is becoming popular as it is available for free. These days social networking becomes an important media for the people, friends, family and other relatives to communicate with each other. Communicating or knowing their friends and family location is really new and rapidly the technologies are arising in this field. Finding the location by various devices is a simple and very small service for people of all ages in all countries. Devices like GPS is needed since it is as simple carrying device as moving from one place to another by using one’s device to find the location and direction only.

The structure of my thesis consists of two parts. In Part I, I will explain what location based service is and a short note about GSM network architecture. The thesis will then present some ideas about how SMS service work. Finally, I will finish my Part I by providing a brief idea of how we can find present location of a user in GSM network architecture. Part II of the thesis will focus on presenting some mobile applications which give location based services. Then my thesis will explain the requirements and implementations of those applications. The thesis will also examine testing phases and results of my applications. The conclusion of this thesis includes the challenges of my applications and its corresponding solutions along with my future works in this field .

This paper aims to develop an android application for android operating system (OS) platform that automatically send the current address location of the user to the server database and can also be sent periodically through SMS (short message services) to store mobile numbers by the user. Location of mobile device is in the form of latitude and longitude which is converted into full address by this application that includes country/state, city, and street number. In case of emergency the user can simply press the emergency button and the application will automatically send SMS alert including location address to the store mobile numbers that might be a police station or close relative. Another way to trace the user is the web server database which keeps updating the location address as long as the application is connected or last location address. The design shows how to implement and develop this app and has been tested on few mobile devices it well be tested on huge number of mobile devices later.

The mission of the Dutch grant program 'Space for Geo-information' (Ruimte voor Geoinformatie, www.rgi.nl) is described as "the enhancement and innovation of the geoinformation infrastructure and the geo-knowledge community in the Netherlands". One of the projects (RGI-149) currently undertaken within this program is called 'Geo-info togo'. The main focus of this project is to ensure that the geo-information needed by field workers in relation to their physical location is automatically available and displayed on their hand-held mobile devices (PDAs). Currently, a user must type in the request for the specific information he/she needs. However, this is inefficient and very impractical on location, due to the fact that the typing might be done with one hand, in gloves and in dirty circumstances. A user doesn't have the time or capability to specify and pull the necessary information, and should thus be automatically provided with a set of relevant, appropriate, well-defined geo-information according to his/her profile, identity, location and behavior. This means having a special kind of location-aware, adaptive, contextdriven supply of geo-information. The mobile device used has to offer adaptive cartography with as little user interaction as possible. This project is undertaken in the context of the application 'Buiten Beter' (Better Outdoors), of which the purpose is to support the surveillance of environmental offenders in cases such as garbage dumping, pollution and other misdemeanors. The work process of these inspectors is well understood, and they should be supported with a suitable set of maps, dedicated to their specific needs. This paper describes the work process into more detail, the proposed method of adaptive cartography and the interaction possibilities that can support these kinds of professionally-used location-based services.
Development of a Location-Based Mobile Application for Smartphones Using Open-Source Technologies

Smartphones capable of receiving Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals and location-based mobile applications have been finding new usage areas day by day. The most popular mobile applications have become a part of our life in many ways, especially in spatial data collection, logistics, sports activities, routing, navigation, information exchange, shopping, emergencies and entertainment. The location-based feature has been the characteristic of the apps realized in real-time or near real-time. Within the scope of this study, a mobile application that can be used on smartphones with the Android operating system and is designed to save time and location information during the desired time and sampling interval and send it to the desired e-mail address is presented. The development stages of this location-based mobile application developed using open-source codes and its use on smartphones were shown. The usage areas of the application and a realized test study were explained.
Implementations of location awareness technologies and their applications

Location awareness technologies open the doors to developing exciting new applications. With the availability of commercial products built on this technology, it is possible to put this technology in everyday use. The most common implementations currently in use are navigation systems installed in most modern vehicles. These applications make use of Global Positioning System (GPS). This paper explores two location aware implementations namely Intel's Place Lab and Microsoft's MapPoint Location Server which became available and are built around an alternate method of location determination. These cost effective and easy to integrate implementations can be leveraged for many useful applications to provide value added services ranging from living a more productive lifestyle to efficient response during emergency situations.
