Tools of the Stats Trade, Part 2
The Saga Continues! Yesssss, the tale of many Ss continues! If you recall, we discussed SPSS and SAS in our previous article. We noted that a main difference between the two is that SPSS offers a more user-friendly graphical interface, good for beginning users, and SAS caters more to the programmer in you. Underlying both packages there is a powerful programming language. You might be thinking, ssssso many packages! Which one should I use when? Should I explore others programs or stick to what I know? Excellent questions! A salient element is the amount of programming flexibility they allow the user. That is, your ability to modify how the program actually works. And it is on this note is that we start our tour today of two more statistical packages: SYSTAT and Stata. These packages offer the convenience of a graphical interface, but they also emphasize the programming component. They are more challenging to learn, but they also can be much more rewarding.
Version 2.0-2 Date 2010/07/30 Title Companion to Applied Regression
2010
Calculates type-II or type-III analysis-of-variance tables for model objects produced by lm, glm, multinom (in the nnet package), polr (in the MASS package), coxph (in the survival package), coxme (in the coxme pckage), svyglm (in the survey package), rlm (in the MASS package), lmer in the lme4 package, lme in the nlme package, and (by the default method) for most models with a linear predictor and asymptotically normal coefficients (see details below). For linear models, F-tests are calculated; for generalized linear models, likelihood-ratio chisquare, Wald chisquare, or F-tests are calculated; for multinomial logit and proportional-odds logit models, likelihood-ratio tests are calculated. Various test statistics are provided for multivariate linear models produced by lm or manova. Partial-likelihood-ratio tests or Wald tests are provided for Cox models. Wald chi-square tests are provided for fixed effects in linear and generalized linear mixed-effects models. Wald chi-square or F tests are provided in the default case.

Statree: An Expert System for Choosing Suitable Statistical Data Processing Techniques
Proceedings of the First Scientific Meeting of the IASE Satellite Conference
The choice of a statistical method suitable for the anlysis of a statistical dataset depends on several parameters: (i) the survey purposes, to be specified in terms of the research hypotheses and the population, (ii) the data formation environment, i.e. the survey and sample designs, the problems faced at the data collection and manipulation stages, (iii) the data measurement scale and the information on and/or the hypotheses about the distribution of variables.

An Introduction to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences
2002
This module provides an introduction to statistical analysis, particularly in regard to survey data. Some of the features of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) are then explained, with reference to a farm forestry survey. Of necessity, this is a brief overview to the highly complex and powerful SPSS package.
