TRIGUEIROS, António Miguel. Códices portugueses quinhentistas iluminados com moedas (2009) // Portuguese XVI century codices illuminated with coins (original) (raw)
ABSTRACTS - The author disputes conclusions of Dagoberto Markl regarding the so-called Book of Hours of D. Manuel (Lisbon, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga) in the facsimile edition, published in Lisbon in 1983. Draws attention to the fact that one of the coins represented in the border of the illumination of the Adoration of the Magi dates from the early years of the reign of João III, placing the date of the illumination at 1522-26 and establishing the patron of the manuscript as JoãoIII. Describes and identifies 15th and 16th c. Spanish and Portuguese coins depicted in the illuminated borders of Portuguese manuscripts, ca.1525-1541: the Book of Hours of João III, previously known as that of D. Manuel, by António de Hollanda and workshop (Lisbon, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga); the Crónica de D. João I by António de Hollanda and workshop (Madrid, Biblioteca Nacional, MS Vit. 25-6); and the Officiale Pontificalium of the Inquisition (Lisboa, Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo). Identifies a formerly unknown gold português of D. João III, and on this basis establishes João III as the patron of the book of hours previously identified with D. Manuel, and dates the manuscript of the Inquisition to 1539-1541.
