Experimental and numerical strength analysis of wagon for transporting bulk material
IMK-14 - Istrazivanje i razvoj, 2014
This paper presents comparative experimental and numerical strength analysis of wagon for transporting bulk material according to the TSI standard and norm EN 12663:2000. The aim of this analysis is to show that results of stresses obtained by measuring with strain gauges and stresses obtained by FEM calculation gives good agreement. Based on the results and their good match, it can be concluded that the numerical FEM analysis can be reliably used for structural analysis. According to this fact, FEM analysis can reduce number of the testing new products. This leads to great savings in the design of new prototypes, in order to immediately start the process of mass production. This would lead to significantly less cost of products.

The study deals with application of flat wagons with lower centre of gravity for transportation of heavy containers and military equipment. A special feature of the wagon structure is the presence of swivel sectors, which are made of composite material. The wagon structure makes it possible to conduct fire by military equipment in motion. The results of determination of the dynamic load for a flat wagon in shunting impacts are presented. The authors defined the basic strength characteristics of the carrying structure of a flat wagon. The calculation was conducted with the finite element method in CosmosWorks software. The results of the calculation proved the efficiency of the solutions taken. The study also presents the fatigue calculation for the carrying structure of a flat wagon designed. The research may encourage engineers to design the unified carrying structures of flat wagons, and improve the rail transport efficiency.
Structural Dynamic Analysis of Freight Railway Wagon Using Finite Element Method
Procedia Materials Science, 2014
This paper describes the development of a virtual freight wagon vehicle using virtual prototyping computer tools. The freight wagon considered as open type wagon "BOXN25" of the Indian Railways. The freight wagon vehicle comprises of car body structure and two bogies. Solidworks is used for modeling the freight wagon and the geometry is exported to finite element tool, ANSYS. A multi degree of freedom system has been reviewed and compared with system having infinite degree of freedom (continuous structure). The current problem falls in the category of large models (Block Lanczos Algorithm is used) and has high degrees of freedom (PCG Solver is used). The structural dynamic response for the virtual freight wagon is determined. It is seen that the car body deformation is influenced by its elastic underframe and sidewalls. The influence of vibration modes, which describe local deflection, on the comfort level and stability of laden goods is discussed. Mode shapes up to a frequency of 30 Hz are considered.
In the paper results of computer-aided strength analysis of the modernized freight wagon based on Finite Element Method are presented. CAD model of the considered freight wagon was created and its strength was analysed in agreement with norms described the way of such kind of freight wagons testing. Then, the model of the analysed freight wagon was modernized by adding composite panels covering the inner surface of the vehicle body. Strength analysis was carried out once again and obtained results were juxtaposed. This work was carried out in order to verify the influence of composite panels on the strength of the freight car body and to estimate the possibility of reducing the steel shell thickness of the box in order to reduce weight of the freight wagon.
Dynamic Load and Strength Determination of Carrying Structure of Wagons Transported by Ferries
Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
A rapid development of economic relations between states has required an introduction of combined rail/ferry transportation. A feature of this type of transportation is the possibility of wagons traveling by sea on specially equipped ships—railway ferries. However, the transportation of wagons by sea is accompanied by damage to their structures. This follows from the fact that the wagons are not adapted to this type of transportation. In addition, the design of wagons does not consider the loads that can act on them during transportation by sea. In this connection, it is important to study the dynamic loading and strength of wagons during their transportation by sea. The current work investigated into dynamic load on the carrying structure of wagons transported by ferries using mathematical and computer modelling and defined accelerations on the wagon body. The adequacy of the models was checked with an F-test. The results of strength calculation for the carrying structure of a wago...

The article presents the results of the dynamic loading and strength study of the fittings for containers of a flat wagon loaded with containers during shunting. It has been found that with impact interaction of corner castings with fittings, there are increased stresses, both in structural components of a flat wagon and in containers. To provide the strength of the fittings of a flat wagon and corner castings of containers, it has been proposed to install elastic-viscous linkage between them. This solution is implemented by installing elements having appropriate properties in the corner castings. Mathematical modeling has been performed to determine the dynamic loading of the flat wagon and containers. The obtained values of dynamic loads were taken into account when determining of the strength indexes. It has been established that, the maximum equivalent stresses in the fittings and corner castings are within acceptable parameters taking into account the proposed solutions. The studies will contribute to provide the strength of the structural components of flat cars and containers during shunting, to reduce the cost of their unscheduled repairs, as well as to create recommendations for design of rolling stock with improved technical and economic indexes.
Design, Analysis and Prototype Development of Railway Wagons on Different Loading Conditions
International Journal of Engineering Applied Sciences and Technology
Indian Railway is a rapidly growing field of research, and extensive efforts are being spent with the aim of improving the reliability and availability of railway systems and of substantially reducing maintenance costs by switching from time-based to event-driven maintenance policies. This Project is aimed at proving that effective Analysis can be applied also on already existing Railway Wagons & Tracks. To do this, and focusing on National and International standards, we are going to develop a Designed prototype of Railway Coaches/Wagons for the different loading conditions for optimum dimensions of wagon in consideration with balancing of tracks and platform loading-unloading of Rolling stock System. With a propose to design, develop, integrate, and test a Prototype of Railway Wagon & Tracks of Indian Railway that will have a conformable system for transportation of the locomotive/electric Engines. All the components of the Coach or wagon of engine has been rolled out on the track. Where we apply the vibration intensity ultrasonic testing and this allowed to examine them and to assess if damage indexes corresponded to actual faults. A huge amount of data has been collected and it was possible to assess that the overall system cannot be considered as in stationary operation, neither when the train speed is constant nor when the same track is travelled. Many different techniques have been developed and tested with the aim of detecting damages, design optimization via simulation, and material research for the Accident Prevention.
Situational Adaptation of the Open Wagon Body to Container Transportation
Applied Sciences
Increased volumes of freight turnover in international transportation require the situational adaptation of the existing wagon fleet to the transportation of containers, which are commonly used at present. The research presented in this article substantiates the possibility of transporting containers in open wagons. It has been found that taking into account the possible displacements of containers in the body, the stresses at the operating modes can be twice as high as the permissible ones if an open wagon is part of the combined train. In this regard, it is proposed that a detachable multifunctional module for securing containers in the open wagon body be used. The detachable module is fixed through the fitting stops, either stationary or hinged, in the body. The rationale for the choice of the detachable module profile, as well as the results of its strength calculation, is given. The strength of the open wagon body during container transportation has been studied taking into acc...
An engineering approach to the fracture assessment of hopper wagons
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2017
A hopper wagon is a type of railroad freight car used to transport many types of materials such as coal, ore, grain, ballast and minerals and bulk cargo etc. It is a complicated welded structure. When performing a safety assessment of cracks in a hopper wagon, it is necessary to consider fatigue crack propagation and fracture among the possible modes of failure. In any such analysis the stress intensity factors at crack tips are important parameters for estimating both residual life and criticality (residual strength). The purpose of this paper is to present engineering fracture analysis method for calculating the stress intensities for cracks in a hopper wagon. The advantage of the present approach is that it negates the need to explicitly model cracks. A crack of any size can be analysed using the original (un-cracked) finite element model. Furthermore, as cracks are not modelled explicitly a coarse mesh can be used to minimise the number of degrees of freedom, thereby reducing the analysis time. As such solutions for the stress-intensity factors can then be obtained quickly and easily for a variety of cracks and crack lengths using the original uncracked finite element analysis. Comparison with the values of stress intensity factors computed using finite element results suggests that this approach is sufficiently satisfactory to enable engineering estimates for residual strength (safety) and residual life.
