2019, Jornal Paranaense de Pediatria
Objectives: to analyse the lipid profile of children and adolescents infected with HIV, assessing correlations between these parameters and the use of antiretroviral therapy with protease inhibitors (PIs). Methods: cross-sectional and descriptive study, with retrospective data collection by evaluation of medical records of 75 patients infected with HIV and age between 2 and 16 years old, in regular outpatient follow-up and with collection of lipid profile, followed at the Pediatric Infectology Service of the UFPR Clinical Hospital Complex (CHC-UFPR) between January 2014 and July 2015. Results: total cholesterol levels, LDL and triglycerides were significantly higher in patients receiving PI. A significantly higher number of patients from the PI group had higher levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides when compared with patients who didn't receive PI. It is noteworthy that viral suppression was observed in 76.47% of patients with PI and 46.34% of patients without this drug (p=0.008). Conclusion: thereis a higher prevalence of dyslipidemia among patients taking HAART, especially PIs, increasing the risk for the development of cardiovascular disease in children with HIV/AIDS. These findings reinforce the need for early counseling of patients, research for new antiretroviral regimensless likely to cause metabolic abnormalities, caution regarding management and establishment of protocols for the recognition and treatment of adverse situations, with a comprehensive plan based on screening and interventions.
