Is the Electric Vehicle an Attractive Option for Customers

As a new technology, electric mobility has the potential to achieve a reduction in CO 2 emissions and contribute to the transition from the current transportation system to a better one, environmentally speaking. The objective of the paper is to aid the necessary decision-making for the adoption and development of electric vehicles in Spain, taking the time horizon of 2020. This will be achieved by building a System Dynamics model for various scenarios that will be used for the analysis and comparison of various dynamic variables, as well as to determine how, and to what extent, they will influence the number of electric vehicles that will run on Spanish roads in the coming years, focusing on the cost variable.

Examining individuals preferences for hybrid electric and alternatively fuelled vehicles

This paper examines individuals motivations when purchasing vehicles, focusing upon what factors would encourage individuals to purchase hybrid electrical vehicle (HEV) or alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV). AFVs in this paper refer to any cars run on alternatives to petrol and diesel. This research attempts to ascertain whether reductions in fuel costs, vehicle registration tax (VRT), or green house gas emissions would encourage individuals to purchase a HEV or an AFV instead of conventional vehicle. VRT is an Irish tax which is levied on the purchase of new vehicles. One of the motivations to conduct this research was to examine a new car tax and VRT scheme introduced by the Irish government in 2008. This new policy rewards the purchase of environmentally friendly cars, with lower VRT and car tax rates. To understand individuals' perceptions of these new taxes a survey was sent to recent customers of a car company in Ireland. The survey asked respondents about their recently purchased vehicle and how important they considered vehicle attributes such 2 as environmental performance, fuel cost, and safety, before making their car purchase.

Assessing drivers’ preferences for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) in Spain

With the aim of analyzing preferences for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), two stated preference methods (a contingent valuation exercise and a discrete choice experiment (DCE)) were used in a survey conducted in a representative sample of Spanish drivers. Overall, our findings show robustness between the willingness to pay (WTP) estimates elicited via a latent class model (LCM) and those from a payment card question. In both cases results show an average positive WTP, although insufficient to actually cover the extra cost of HEVs. The lack of interest for HEVs may be motivated by different reasons, including the low level of information related to this technology, and additional false believes about the autonomy of these vehicles. Furthermore, drivers who declare a willingness to buy HEVs do not always do so for environmental reasons, but rather for reputational issues related to their self-image. Thus, in order to increase the market share for HEV vehicles in the Spanish market, informative campaigns and additional economic incentives may be designed.

The private and social monetary costs and the energy consumption of a car. An estimate for seven cars with different vehicle technologies on sale in Italy

This paper estimates the total private and social cost of seven cars (the gasoline VW Polo, the diesel Ford Fiesta, the CNG Fiat Punto Evo Natural Power, the LPG Alfa Romeo MiTo, the Hybrid Toyota Yaris, the BEV with leased-battery Renault Zoe and the BEV Peugeot iOn.), making use of the Italian data with reference to the vehicles' purchase and maintenance costs, fuel and electricity costs, energy mix, pollution and noise costs. Among the selected cars, the diesel Ford Fiesta currently performs best from the private and social cost as well as energy consumption point of view. From the social point of view, both the Toyota Yaris (Hybrid) and the Alfa R. MiTo (bi-fuel LPG) perform as well as the BEVs, and the absolute difference with the conventional fuel cars is quite small. A scenario analysis is also performed to evaluate how the cars' ranking is affected by how many years a car is kept, by how many kilometers per year a car is driven, by the subsidies enacted by the Italian government, by an increase in the price of fuel and by a decrease in the price of the batteries.

Which Factors Affect Most Buyers’ Choices Between Fuel and Electric Vehicles?

The aim of the given research is to find out the factors besides of those based on price, which are affecting people's choices when acquiring a new greener vehicle. At first sight it might seem that the answers could be quite obvious: we can always argue that the market of electric vehicles is very weak, regarding its reliability, the inconveniences with charging the batteries, the price, the aftermarket, etc. The figures for recent years show that the level of carbon emissions has decreased due to the sanctions undertaken by the government, such as congestion charges especially for the central zones of London. The sampling for this research was randomly chosen people in the streets and shops in Central London. As a result of the survey, data analysis reveals that customers are mostly affected by the design of electric vehicles. Surprisingly enough price as a factor is only at the third place of importance for most of the respondents. As the analysis of open questions suggests the majority is positive for the future of electric vehicles, but they are rather concerned for technical issues such as life of batteries, charging points around London and surrounding areas.

Demand for environmentally friendly vehicles: A review and new evidence

Although the need for more environmentally friendly vehicles was recognised some decades ago, this new market has yet not established itself. It is necessary to study consumer behaviour to ascertain when people would purchase hybrid or electric vehicles rather than conventional ones. An in-depth review of the state-of-the-art has identified existing deficiencies and these are addressed in this paper, proposing a new approach that is applied to the case of Santander in Spain. Emphasis is placed on the role of citizens in researching the local market and their requirements with respect to such vehicles; our model assumes variability in user preferences, an utmost requirement as concluded from the literature review. Results suggest that the highest demand for cleaner vehicles would be achieved in two ways: firstly, by penalizing conventional vehicles in terms of costs/km; secondly, by providing incentives directed to lower the purchasing price of hybrid and electric vehicles. Finally, as demand becomes more elastic, the preferred strategy should firstly focus on hybrid vehicles.

Potential Early Adopters of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in Spain—Towards a Customer Profile

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) by consumers is regarded as a key strategic goal for the reduction in transport-related air pollution levels. Although sales of EVs continue to rise year on year, generally, the attainment of the strategic goals set by various governments for the adoption of EVs remains a distant target. The purpose of this study is to identify the customer profile of early adopters of EVs in Spain: one of Europe’s largest economies, yet the country with the lowest uptake of EVs at present. The analysis presented here is based on an online survey of 404 potential consumers of EVs in Spain. Are consumer preferences for attributes of alternative vehicles sufficiently accounted for in current policies?

International research illustrates some attributes of electro-mobility such as charging infrastructure and range which are crucial determinants of market development. Between 2017 and 2020 the number of battery electric vehicles in Germany has increased much more compared to the number of charging points. High preferences for these attributes in combination with insufficient infrastructure require further clarification to explain why the development of markets for electro-mobility in Germany during the last years is not as expected. This study aims to examine the willingness to pay for attributes of different types of electric vehicles and for car sharing in order to derive recommendations for marketing and policy. The representative study is based on a survey of 405 car users in Germany using a discrete choice experiment with the attributes price, power, running costs, bonus, range and availability of charging stations. 12 choice situations were presented to each respondent. A latent class model was used to analyze socio economic determinants of the willingness to pay for single attributes. The results confirm findings in the literature indicating low preferences for battery electric vehicles in general. Due to high shares of house owners in suburban regions this consumer group should be more focused in local sustainability concepts and marketing of battery electric vehicles and other alternative vehicles.

Low-carbon vehicles due to their relatively lower fuel intensity directly affect CO2 emissions and are thus technologic solutions that may mitigate climate change.
