Species Diversity of Lichens in Balh Valley of Himachal Pradesh, North Western Himalaya

During present investigation a total of sixty specimens of lichens were collected from Balh valley. The lichens were collected during November 2018 to February 2019 from twenty eight localities of Balh Valley in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, North Western Himalaya. A total of nineteen species of lichens were identified on the basis of morphological and anatomical characters. Relevant literature was consulted for confirmation of species identification. Out of the identified species, one species viz. Usnea longissima is being reported for the first time from Mandi district. Phaeophyscia hispidula is most common out of the nineteen species and is found in fifteen localities. The species diversity index (α, β, ɤ) of all the localities was calculated. The highest alpha diversity (four) was found in Bagla and Kasarla. The lowest alpha diversity (one) was found at Bhour, Chakker, Kansa, Nagchala and Pairi. Beta diversity of all localities was 47 and gamma diversity was 19. The identified specimens have been deposited in CPUH (The Herbarium, Department of Biosciences, Career Point University Hamirpur) for preservation and future reference.
An assessment of lichen diversity from Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, India

A total of 70 species of lichens belonging to 29 genera and 15 families were found growing in eight different localities of Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, India. The present study reveals the addition of 14 species of lichens as new to the state. The lichen genus Lecanora with 11 species exhibits the dominance in the area. Among the different localities of the district the area Sikandra Dhar showed maximum diversity of lichens followed by Balh valley, Barot and Mandi city as 19, 18, 17 and 16 species, respectively. The tropical zone exhibits luxuriant growth of trees like Pinus, Shorea robusta, Prunus, Celtis, Grewia and Rubina. The Rubina and Populus trees cultivated along road side bear luxuriant growth of Candelaria concolor together with Physcia dilatata, a foliose lichen. The temperate region of the district exhibits luxuriant growth of Quercus leucotricophora trees which support the luxuriant growth of Parmotrema nilgherrense, Ramalina conduplicans, Ramalina sinensis, Heterodermia diademata and Usnea species.
An enumeration of lichens from the Bageshwar district of Kumaun Himalaya, Uttarakhand, India
The paper, lists 361 species of lichens belonging to 89 genera and 35 families from the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. The study is based on the published literature and specimens in the herbarium of National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow (LWG). Dhakuri and Khati areas, situated between 2683 2210 m have the highest diversity of lichens represented by 215 and 172 species, respectively. Lichen, families Parmeliaceae with 23 genera and Physciaceae with 8 genera are the dominant families in the district. Among the different lichen genera, Cladonia with 22 species and Heterodermia with 18 species exhibit their dominance in the area. Trees bear a luxuriant growth of lichens and particularly Quercus, Pinus, Alnus and Cedrus exhibit the maximum diversity of epiphytic lichens in the district.
New addition to lichen flora of Uttar Pradesh, India

The lichen taxa collected from Uttar Pradesh are documented in different checklist, floristic, monographic and revisionary studies (Awasthi, 1980, 1988, 1991, 2000, 2007, Srivastava, 2004, Dubey et al. 2007, Singh & Sinha 2010, Karakoti et al. 2014, Gupta et al. 2015). Recently Nayaka & Upreti (2013) analyzed the status of lichen diversity in Uttar Pradesh which revealed the occurrence of 135 species belonging to 46 genera and 25 families. This state represented three distinct phytogeographical regions. The transitional belt running along the entire length of the state of Uttarakhand and country of Nepal is called the “Terai‟ and „Bhabhar‟ area and have thick forest cover, swamps and marshes. Lichen diversity assessment in Pindari Glacier Valley of Uttarakhand, India
Based on published literature, preserved lichen specimens at herbarium in National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow (LWG), and recent collections made from the temperate and alpine areas, the lichen diversity of Pindari Glacier valley in Uttarakhand revealed the occurrence of 283 species belonging to 77 genera and 35 families. The area exhibits much diversity of all the growth forms of lichens and is represented by 117 foliose, 104 crustose and 50 fruticose taxa. The wide range of phorophytes supports rich diversity of bark inhabiting lichens represented by 131 species. Lichen family Parmeliaceae dominates the region and is commonly distributed among different sites of Pindari. Caloplaca, Cladonia, Everniastrum and Phaeophyscia are commonly distributed genera in the valley. The available information regarding lichen diversity provides baseline data which will be useful in conducting future biomonitoring studies and developing conservation strategies in the valley.
DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF MACRO-LICHEN IN KUMAUN HIMALAYA, UTTARAKHAND
The paper enumerates 246 species of lichens belonging to 45 genera and 13 families from the Kumaun Himalaya Uttarakhand. The study is based on the collection recently made during different field trips in the region. Out of the different districts, Pithoragarh and Bagehswar districts comprised of most of the localities falls under temperate and alpine regions and bears the maximum diversity of foliose lichens. New records of lichens from foothills of Kumaun Himalayas to the lichen flora of Uttarakhand, India

The paper presents an enumeration of seven lichen species as addition to the lichen flora of foothills of Kumaun Himalayas, Uttarakhand. The enumerated species belong to six genera and six families. The explored area showed dominance of crustose lichens while only two foliose and a single leprose species was recorded. A morpho-taxonomic note together with ecology and distribution of all the recorded lichen species as new addition to lichen flora of Uttarakhand is provided.
Diversity and Distribution of Lichens in India vis a vis its Lichenogeographic Regions

Undoubtedly, India is one of the lichen diversity hotspots, where country as a whole with diverse climate, vegetation and topography provide numerous habitats for luxuriant growth of lichens. The compilation of all the lichens reported so far from the country resulted in 2428 lichen taxa which belong to 2368 species, 305 genus and 67 species. With the present data whole country could be divided into eight lichenogeographic regions where Eastern Himalaya and North-east India, and Western Ghats possessed maximum diversity of lichens with 1144 and 1138 species respectively. However, Western Ghats harbors maximum number of 266 endemic taxa in comparison to Eastern Himalayan region (187 taxa). Andaman and Nicobar Islands though lesser number of species the percentage of endemic taxa is too high up to 27%. The country also has as many as 76 rare taxa which are not being collected since many years and can be included under Redlist category. Graphidaceae with 431 species 35 genus is the most dominant family in the country, and in tu3rn Graphis is the most dominant genus with 115 taxa. The maximum numbers of lichen in India belong to crustose group (1509 taxa) and found inhabiting bark.
