Effectiveness Of Social Media In Information Dissemination In Public Universities: A Case Of Kenyatta University, Kenya

The rise and influence of social media in society cannot be ignored. Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn among others have become the mainstream channels used for communication. Corporate entities globally are increasingly adopting the use of social media platforms to reach out to their target audiences and advance their agenda. However, information posted on social media by organizations might be taken seriously or at face value by those that are targeted. This sought to assess the effectiveness of social media in information dissemination in public institutions: A case study of Kenyatta University. The specific objectives were: to explore students reliability, students satisfaction and student social media engagement in information dissemination in Kenyatta University. A mixedmethod research approach was utilized. Persuasion theory, Social cognitive theory and theory of Social presence guided the study. The study targeted 22,854 first and forth undergraduate students in regular mode of study at Kenyatta University's main campus. The sample size was determined using the Slovin's formula. The sample size was 100 participants. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of SPSS. In determining relationship between variables the correlation and regression analysis was done. Tables and charts were utilized in data presentation. The findings revealed that students' reliability on social media had an effect on the information dissemination in public institutions; students' satisfaction with social media had an effect on the information dissemination in public institutions and that students' social media engagement had an effect on information dissemination. The study concluded that social media provide a platform for communication that allows users to engage with one another regardless of time or location. Public universities should plan and create engaging content that is relevant to students' interests and needs. The content should be varied and visually appealing, utilizing images, videos, infographics, and other multimedia formats.

Analysis of Social Media Utilization by Students in Higher Education: A Critical Literature Review of Ghana

Social media has drastically changed the communication perspective of the world through different aspects, both positively and negatively. The existence of social media has made it easy for scholars and non-scholars to pass information in the form of communication as well as has boosted businesses through online advertising and selling. Social media is enhanced by different aspects and forms of technology hence it is safe to say the two go hand in hand in depicting a social and now our academic world. Social media and Institutions of Higher Education work together to explore different skills including critical thinking, collaborations, and knowledge construction. This means that students, lecturers, and professors benefit differently from social media. For instance, in certain countries, social media is accepted as a tool for teaching and learning. Ideally, through social media, one is able to attend online classes without necessarily appearing physically at the lecture hall. In a country like Ghana, social media has paved ways to very many teachers and students in higher educational institutions who have benefited differently. This paper focuses on a literature review of social media utilization by students in higher educational institutions in Ghana. Other concepts of social media will also be explored including the positive and negative effects of social media on students and professors in tertiary education. USAGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA FOR TEACHING MASS COMMUNICATION IN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IN KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

Social media has been widely adopted and used by personnel in different organizations around the world including students in higher institutions. Consequently, social media utilization helps to create flexible learning process, enables active class participation and communication. However, faculty members in some developing countries like Nigeria are yet to fully inculcate the usage of social media in the teaching of mass communication in higher institutions. Using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study quantitatively examines the behavioral intentions of the faculty members of the Department of Mass Communication on the use social media in the teaching of Mass communication in Kaduna Polytechnic and Kaduna State University, Kaduna, Nigeria. 70 academics from both Kaduna state Polytechnic and Kaduna state university were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. The data was analyzed using SPSS and Smart-PLS. Results indicate that performance expectancy and effort expectancy are significant factors affecting behavioral intention. In this study, social influence is reported insignificant and both behavioral intention and facilitating conditions have a significant impact on usage of social media. This study concludes with the implications and recommendations for policy makers and future studies.

Extent of the Use of Social Media as an Instructional Strategy in Lagos State University: A Case Study of Faculty of Education

This study explores the usage of social media platforms as an instructional strategy among undergraduate and postgraduate students of the faculty of education in Lagos State University. Three research questions were asked; 1. What social media tools do the students use and why? 2. How skillful are the students in the use of different social media? 3. What concerns do the students have regarding the use of social media for teaching and learning? The aim of the study presented in the study is to investigate how students use social media for education purposes and how they connect in new and meaningful ways. This research sought to understand the use of social media as a tool among higher education students, strategies they use to integrate social media in formal learning, concerns they have, their strategies to mitigate those concerns and how these technologies can be used in education. The study adopts a survey design using questionnaires to understand better the types of social media that students find beneficial for future learning opportunities, explore the differences in how students currently use social media for learning, professional upgrading, networking and looking at the possible future uses of social media in the learning environment which will help schools understand better, the usefulness of these social media. The study also identified the problems of students in the use of these new technologies for teaching and learning purposes. The result is analysed using frequencies and percentages.

The Use of Social-Media and IT Application Tools for Teaching in Ghanaian Universities: Case of University of Cape Coast, Ghana

The use of social media and IT application tools as an alternative pedagogical approach in higher educational institutions of learning cannot be compromised. Considering their incalculable advantages especially, in these times of the COVID-19 pandemic where closure of schools characterised some of the mitigating factors which wedged pedagogy. Nonetheless, quite a few institutions have taken advantage of these technologically inclined resources to facilitate teaching and learning. The Negative Effects of Social Media on Tertiary Students in Ghana

Tertiary Institutions among other businesses have been promoting their services through various conventional media which can be considered as an integrated form of communication. On the other hand, with the incorporation of the modern technologies into individual and professional lives, tertiary cannot only communicate effectively with their target audience, but they can also use social media to disseminate information and obtain feedback.Using a quantitative research approach, this research identified the social media channels students use to search for tertiary institutions, examined the various social media platforms students actively engage in, how the use of social media influence students' tertiary institutions decision-making process and identified other factors that influence students' choice of tertiary institutions. Results showed that respondents heavily rely on university website to search for tertiary institution information even though they are very active on WhatsApp, spending over 2 hours daily. The findings of this research adds on to existing research on consumer decision making with respect to their choice of tertiary institutions. It also helps authorities of various tertiary institutions, to improve on their social media platform activities and also develop communication strategies in other to attract potential students through the various social media platforms. It might serve as the required cause for those institutions that have no presence at all on social media to establish one since prospective students might make use of such handles in selecting schools.

The use of social media technology in universities: A case of Solusi University, Zimbabwe

The twenty first century has witnessed a swift development in the production and usage of the Social Media Technology. Universities and other tertiary institutions have eagerly welcomed this development. However, a number of educationalists and material developers have foreseen the dangers of undue reliance and misuse of technology by these university students. Utilization of the Social Media Among Students of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic Nigeria

In 21st century, easily access to information and communication technology through social media become major concern throughout worldwide. This study examined the use of social media among students of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic. The objectives are: (1) to determine Hassan Usman Polytechnic students in actively usage of social media, (2) to identify students’ perception of social media and (3) to examine the frequency of social media usage. A descriptive survey design was adopted. Sampling size of 98 students of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic were randomly selected.
