THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL NETWORK ON NIGERIAN YOUTHS.docx

Considering the rate of participation on the social network, this paper evaluates the effect of social network on Nigerian youths. There is no gain saying that the social network has had dramatic influence on the youths of Nigeria. Furthermore, it is clear that most of our youths, especially undergraduate students have lost their control over social media usage and begun having problems with their functionality in social, vocational and personal circles as the internet has taken over total control of their lives. They have given the social networking media the indescribable power over their sense of decision and focus. This has influenced to a great extent what and who they connect with, what they look at, and the measures of their decision making process; school work and social interaction have been affected at the advent of these social media.

USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA BY YOUTHS IN SELECTED CITIES OF SOUTH-SOUTH, NIGERIA

Society and the Nigerian Child: Issues and Emerging Trends in the 21st Century, 2015

Social media sites are among communication platforms on the Internet which support interpersonal and group communication. Social media sites have enormous impact on users and the youth in any society are major users because they are easily drawn to modern innovations. Studies have been limited to general prospects and challenges on using Internet in Nigeria. In the light of suppositions that Nigerian youth use social media, this study focuses on their level of accessibility, what social media sites on the internet are popular among them and what they use them for. The study was anchored on the Uses and Gratification media theory and employed survey methodology in which structured questionnaire was administered to youth of selected cities in South-South, Nigeria. Findings indicate low level of accessibility of Nigerian youth to social media networks; Facebook topped the list of commonest social media networks; and chatting, finding old friends as well as making new friends are things Nigerian youth use the social media sites mostly for. The study recommends that government, Internet service providers (ISP) and other relevant bodies should make access to the Internet more affordable and reliable in Nigeria as prohibitive costs and unreliable connectivity were blamed for the low accessibility of social media sites. Social media networks are recommended as good platforms to reach Nigerian youths with social mobilization/orientation messages by social crusaders and change agents. The study also recommends further research on Nigerian youth marginal usage of the social media for negative purposes such as pornography, fraudulent business deals ("419", "Yahoo-Yahoo"); blackmail; academic fraud; false love affairs; impersonation; and spreading gossip/rumour.

SOCIAL NETWORKING IN VIRTUAL COMMUNITY CENTRES: USES AND PERCEPTION AMONG SELECTED NIGERIAN STUDENTS

Social media culture has become one of the dominant cultures in 21st century. While there are divergent views about the significance of this technology, one thing is most definite – the youths, especially university students have incorporated the use of social media into their daily routine. This study evaluates the manner of interaction within the virtual community centres (social networking sites) and examines students’ perception of this emerging technology. The study, conducted in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, a metropolitan university in Nigeria, surveyed 262 students out of which 120 (45.8%) and 110 (42%) were first and final year students respectively. The study, conducted within the theoretical ambience of mediamorphosis, found that most students use social media more to connect with their existing relationships than using it to create new relationships. In this regard, social networking could be described as an extension of face-to-face communication, a situation where old and new media live in mutual coexistence without abolishing the old ones. The study also revealed that mobile phone constitutes the most popular means through which the students access social media. Perceived negative effects of social networking as revealed by the study are time wastage, invasion of privacy, addiction and promotion of social vices.
