In the last decades the corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been a major subject both for universities, civil society and businesses. Although the CSR concept is especially promoted by large multinational and transnational corporations, it has become also a prominent issue for universities. Social responsibility represents more than a challenge for universities. It has to be a purpose of the universities, taking into account that young people formation also means creating a high level of awareness about the need to involve members of society in solving social problems. Our paper contributes for better clarifying the CSR concept and presents as a study case some of initiatives of the University of Bucharest related to the social responsibility.
A snapshot of university research through the lens of university social responsibility

University research in the framework of university social responsibility implies a commitment to society, which means that maximum stakeholder participation should be encouraged, mainly for emancipatory purposes. In this study we describe the state of the art in university research from an inclusive point of view according to the level of stakeholder participation in the research process. To this end, 80 interviews were held with research groups in five European countries. Results show that, in general, there is no inclusive participation, and that information about research outcomes is only shared with stakeholders through media channels. In addition, no differences were found between areas of research, and although applied research seems to be more participatory than basic research, in general the participation is self-interested on the part of the researcher. The presented article focusses on the analysis of perception of the university social responsibility through the eyes of Slovak university students. The aim is to compare how the values, efficiency of the organisation (university), and the educational process influence the perception of social responsibility among university students themselves. The research is based on the application of quantitative methodology towards the evaluation of differences and similarities in perceptions using two types of tests for statistical analysis, comparative (Mann-Whitney U test) and correlational (bivariate correlation matrix of Spearman's rho).The results of the research provide a deeper understanding of how universities can shape students' approach to social responsibility through their values and educational processes, which has important implications for the development of university policies and practices.

The university social relevance is the effective management of the academic functions in a committed way, from which it analyzes, studies, and investigates the problems, needs, requirements of the social environment to identify, characterize, rank them. And a model social action to the research, teaching, extension, and training of professionals, consistent with social needs, linked to the realities of the various contexts of human performance that neo university organizations, rescuing sustainability with human development and socioeconomic, involving the creative potentials and indigenous innovations of society. To coexistence between community and university in favor of endogenous growth is required, conceived as the leverage from the social and organizational strengths of the human conglomerate in reference, which promote; quality of life and sustainable human progress. Consequently, the purpose of this dissertation is limited to carrying out an analysis of the relevance and social responsibility of sustainable university organizations from the endogenous perspective. From the qualitative, interpretive, and hermeneutical paradigm, the categories of analysis are reviewed, to conclude; that the university theoretically approaches endogenous development. However, it is necessary to generate links of structural-organizational configuration within the educational institutions that involve processes related to their sustainability over time and their impacts.

The evolution in the sector set new tasks for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)*, where — in addition to educational activity — their cooperation with other entities is assumed, which will make it possible to take up contemporary challenges. One of these is University Social Responsibility (USR)*, the popularity of which is growing; however, this area is not sufficiently recognized in the relevant literature. With the rise of knowledge economy, the economic development is dependent upon the production, appropriation, profitization, and distribution of knowledge. When knowledge becomes capital, its dissemination in the society out of benevolence of the universities becomes uncertain. It is because the linkages between the economy and the universities’ core activities of teaching and research have become strong as never before, their linkages with the community and society at large have become blurred. By unravelling the national and international discourse on university social responsibility and related constructs, this chapter shows the importance of university-society linkages in the current economic paradigm, reinstituted not just through a few departments and clinical programmes of the universities but also through their core activities of teaching and research.
